While it's not quite ready for mere mortals to use it, hackers that call themselves the iPhone/Touch Dev Team say they've finally managed to jailbreak the iPhone firmware version 1.1.1. It's great news because 1) the latest iPhone can be activated again without signing up with AT&T and 2) third-party applications will be able to run once again, kinda. Don't get too excited just yet, though, because there's still a lot of "major hacking" left to do. Full details from Dev Team after the jump:
• Third Party apps run. Kind of. We probably have to recompile many of them for the new frameworks because many of them crash.• Springboard no longer recognizes DisplayOrder.plist. And the list of "whitelisted" apps (that is, the official Applications including Safari, Photos, Calendar, etc) seems to be hard-coded into Springboard.app
• The iPhone has been activated via third-party workarounds.
• The 1.1.1 binaries barely work with 1.0.2—at least not well enough to run the music store without major hacking.
• The Mobile Terminal App works on 1.1.1.
• The entire bsd suite still works—as do standard command-line utilities compiled for ARM.
• 1.1.1 references both com.apple.mobile.radio and com.apple.mobile.nike.
• The jailbreak method is nowhere near ready for prime time. So please be patient.

Kudos to the iPhone Dev Team!. I'm kinda worried about the SpringBoard architecture but I bet the iPDT will beat it
What about the modem baseband reflash?
yah, maybe i can update my phone soon :)
WOO HOOOOO!
It's only a matter of time and we'll be "back to normal"
And the cycle begins again. Hacks will come this week. In 2 or 3 more weeks Apple will update with new features for iPhone and 'BOOM!', hacked iPhone will brick again. Lam and others will comment and blog about how Apple has become an evil empire.
Wash. Repeat. I'm bored already.
Yea but no one will upgrade next time
@jriga: exactly. i can't wait to see all the little fanbois cry to their mommies about their iphone.
@nemoid: NO ONE is crying more than people like you. You generate so much more traffic than ANY fanboy with your infantile obsession with "fanbois", as you call them.
Grow up. Thanks.
no one - except the 90% of people who don't hack their iPhones. not because they don't want to, but because they are technical n00bs who don't know how to in the first place...
c'mon - the segment of population of iPhone owners ACTUALLY interested is very low... it's just that the people who ARE affected are the most vocal.
and for the record - I can't wait until we get the apps working again - praise the day that happens!
I had a Mac Laptop 165. All that is reaminig is the hard drive. I need the info to be transferred to my new Mac. How do I get that done?
Why would anyone bother? Apple has made it clear that they will not allow this sort of software to work after they update the software, so why bother playing a cat and mouse game like this? At least with PSP owners they could take comfort in the fact that their device would not be 'bricked' when updating the software. With the iPhone, it seems Apple is almost pleased to make your device a pretty paperweight -- so, why would you egg them on? Is this some sort of hacker version of the game Chicken?
I just do not get it, folks.
What I would like to see is a total factory restore including the modem baseband so that we can utilize the updates go forward.
Wow, thanks for putting that image on the top of the front page. Need to find a new home page. Don't you guys know better??
@robotstephe:
Those of us that choose to leave it pristine aren't all necessarily technical n00bs. I look at modded iPhones like modded Civics. The original design works just fine for me. It really doesn't need the 4' fiberglass wing and the led windshield wiper nozzles.
I clicked on this for the picture of boobs. Nothing more. Nothing less.
@Monty:
I think I remember reading that Apple stated they would not go out of their way to brick hacked iPhones. If I remember correctly, they just wouldn't takes hacks into consideration when creating the updates.
@nemoid: On the contrary, the little fanbois will just wait a month for the latest hack to come along. Meanwhile YOU will still be a douche.
@WorkingOnYourInvoice: Agreed. I am happy with my iPhone with the features it has, and any addtional features Apple implements later. Like your Honda analogy.
This piktar makes me happy in pants.
I'm fine with waiting longer than usual before I update my iPhone if it means that I can be on T-Mobile instead of AT&T and keep an IM client and other neat software installed.
The main reason to update to 1.1.1 seems to be to add a new way to buy more stuff from Apple, so I'm not in a big hurry, anyway. The bugfixes and little refinements will be nice, but I can live without those for a little longer, too.
i can't believe it took 12 comments for somebody to actually mention the totally hot pic. man you are all WAY too obsessed with the damn iphone
Can you really be arsed with this upgrade/brick/hack monthly crap? Just love the iPhone for what it is.
At least when you're storming around your house like a bear with a sore head, it'll be the turn of your better half to say "oh just ignore him - it's his time of the month".
@Monty:
Why? Because it's MY phone. I purchased it. I OWN it. It's MY property and as such, I have the right to do with it as I please. I'm not talking about unlocking the phone (I have no reason to do that), but I AM talking about being able to install 3rd-party apps. I've grown very reliant on ToDoList and VoiceNotes (two apps that the phone SHOULD have come with in the first place), and if upgrading the phone's firmware means I'll lose that ability to run 3rd-party apps, then I WON'T upgrade the phone's firmware. For me, it's just that simple. Sure, I'd love to have the iTunes WiFI store on my phone, but not at the expense of 3rd-party apps. So the "Cat & Mouse" game can continue; I don't care. I'll just always be a firmware version or two behind.
Yet oddly enough the swimware was left in tact. Geeks.
@nemoid: Go drink antifreeze whilst playing in traffic.
@Monty
Actually, Sony did try to brick PSPs with the TA-082+ version of the PSP's motherboard.

It's just that bricking a phone angers people a lot more than a video game console. Plus, it's MUCH more expensive. Not only that, the iPhone isn't "hardware" bricked, but software locked. Huge difference there.
I'm just sticking with morse code and campfires. Keeps life simpler.
@sassyone: yeah, it took 12 comments for an infantile "OMG/Boobs/happy pants" comment. See, some of us go outside where there are women whom you could meet and actually talk to. You meant to go to fleshbot me thinks.
Is this the first iPhone hack article that doesn't have a Star Wars pic? OK, I love bikinis, but stick with the theme (it's easier on my work ethics).
Anybody else notice the camel-toe on the blue chick?
@Gormania: You have earned my respect, sir.
Now let's see the iPod Touch hacked. Please? I'll love you forever if you do. Ewww! Not like that. Meh, who am I kidding, my standards aren't that high. Maybe like that.
ummm ya but very small camel toe lol
Anyways, its not a cat and mouse, game its called patience... only idiots that went and upgraded to 1.1.1 after unlocking their phone had issues...
Common sense in the hacker/cracker community is don't apply firmware/software upgrades from the factory until the crack/hack has been CONFIRMED to work, or a new hack/crack is released that will work with the new verisons.
If people would stand by that mentatility we wouldn't have any bricked iphones and the dev team could work in peace to finish the next jailbrake, wow ya how depressing we'd have to wait for our wireless store and minimal other features an extra month, but atleast we'd have the new crack and new softwares instead of dead bricks...
Start being patient, dont upgrade until the new cracks are out its as simple as that.
Also why is settling for what apple gives good enough? They don't even give us an IM client, hell i'm gonna jailbrake my 1.1.1 for apolloim alone, ya theirs other cool stuff but that's my #1 app to install.
Q: Why do ppl who are "happy with their factory iPhone and couldn't care less" always comment on blog articles about hacking and cracking said phone?!
A: They are trolling.
If you're not interested why comment?!
P.S. Congrats to the IPDT and keep up the good work!
dose that picture imply Steve Jobs bury the hottest porn in iPhone?
forget the girls, w00t for teh dev team
Hooray for dev team. I hope that soon they can enable 3rd apps. i love them
The one with the camel toe is a butter face with an over bite. And her knees are too sharp.
@stymyx: Check your license agreement that came with your iPhone. You own the phone. The software on it is licensed from Apple.
@MMFY:"If you're not interested why comment?!"
Why assume we aren't interested?
nobody in here is trolling except you.
Ha, the bars were already wide enough for red in the middle to walk straight through, except in the boobage area.
No Star Wars image and a "TFSU" comment? Or is Charlie White into girls while Jesus is into Star Wars more than girls? Personally, I like both but I enjoy the girlie pics better. Thanks Charlie.
I'll bet she can crack an iPhone open with her cho-cha!
lol as long as there are people trying to keep others out there will be the onces getting in mwhahahah like me :P holla
lol fan bois ahhh americans are such a retarted race they should all be checked for common sence "lacking some" mwhahaha Russian pride for life
LOL@ cameltoe comments!
Can the Dev Team use the Cameltoe to unlock the iPhone? could work better than money donations!!
Donate cametoe to the Dev Team! thanks!!
cameltoe jailbreaking is the first step to unlocking 1.1.1!!! or downgrade the baseband ;)

The contrast with the photo in the post below this one amuses me.
NIKE + ON THE IPHONE!!!!!
Finally, I have a reason to ditch my nano! There was no reason keep another flash based iPod be compatible with Nike + (including the touch). This is great news. Now I'm going to buy an iPhone.
