iPod Touch Definitely Has No Bluetooth, So Enough Already UPDATED

The iPod Touch has been dissected by the ace mechanics at iFixit. And unless they overlooked something—actually, nevermind. There's no Bluetooth in the iPod Touch. That's it. Final. iFixit didn't mention a trace of Bluetooth and that's enough for us to call this silly rumor the result of an overzealous photoshopper who has probably already been fired (force-choked to death) by Jobs himself. Some other findings of note:

- Audio chip is identical to the iPhone's
- Samsung memory (like the iPhone's)
- Processor similar to the iPhone's
- Display is attached to the iPod with 16 screws (iPhone uses adhesive)
- Display is scratch-resistant, like iPhone

Oh yeah, and they also found that there's no freaking Bluetooth.

UPDATE 1: We're talking more to iFixit on the matter. There was a faulty consensus that their lack of report on Bluetooth implied that there was no Bluetooth. That was our mistake.

UPDATE 2: From iFixit: We're looking into it. It's hard to say because they can disguise bluetooth antenna on the PCB and the chip could be integrated into something else. I'll see what I can dig up.[ifixit]

  • What happened to the story about the glass trailer?

  • I'm not mad or anything, just disappointed.

  • Hahaha, theres goes Engadget's "breaking news."

  • They also don't mention a wi-fi chip. Does that mean it doesn't have wi-fi either? I see nothing in this article that mentions anything about bluetooth at all.

Couldn't the same radio chip that handles wi-fi, also integrate bluetooth? I don't know enough about this, so I'm really asking.

  • u need bluetooth? samsung p2 is the best production i think, it has no coverflow and not good UI compare to touchpod but it support bluetooth, better quality battery, and Better PRICE POLICY

  • sdf

  • Any thoughts on this?

    [davidfilms.wordpress.com]

  • So does this have Bluetooth or not!? I don't get it... :P

  • @flumbo:
Same thing I was about to say. Wifi and bluetooth can be on the same chip, and since there is no mention of what kind of wifi chip they use, it's still unknown whether bluetooth is there or not.

  • Um, "confirmed?" How's that?

Unless you guys know something about the components integrated on the logic board that isn't mentioned in their write up, this confirmation seems a bit premature.

It may be that there is no bluetooth, but I don't see how you can reach that conclusion based on ifixit's write up alone.

  • @Arex: This comment from engadget makes sense though:

tanais: "Re Branding: not likely in the base of the WiFi and support chips, Any teardown should start by looking the same two chips that provide WiFi/BT as in the iPhone -- The Marvel 8686 and the CSR 41B14 Bluecore4 ROM.

There is a possibility that apple will use the CSR UniFi all-in-one chipset: [www.csr.com] which has better BT and WiFi co-existance management. (see here [www.csr.com]). Time will tell."

  • okay. I just want to ask, what is the big deal? Apple said there was no bluetooth on it... and they probably really meant that.

people will probably buy it anyways

i know it is kind of disappointing, but in my opinion wifi is enough.

  • @MadColombian: The question people have is not if the Touch has bluetooth support from Apple. I think everyone believes what Apple says in that regard. The question people want to know is whether the bluetooth hardware is included and non-functional from the factory with the hope that support could be included through some sort of hack in the future.

  • @jizzmodo: so, i have a question about the 16 screws, the touch's craptacular screen, and the iPhone's fantabulous screen: i don't know how to word the question but it involves those elements and some uncertainty. can you figure it out? i mean, i want a touch, but apparently it sort of suxx0rz while the iPhone has everything i want but has stuff i don't want (the whole phone thing just isn't my bag). gah, my penis is so conflicted.

  • It doesn't use samsung memory, like the iphone. It uses toshiba memory and it is clearly visible in the photos. I wish giz would stop running copycat stories and getting their information wrong. I'm aware you have updated the post to ask the ifixit guys to inspect the chips again, but come on! You guys have absolutely no idea if it's really in there or not and throwing up a title that says it definitely has no bluetooth is just plain reckless. You really have no clue. The ifixit photos don't say it does but they also don't say it doesn't. You can't even really see the wifi chip in any of those photos. Do some more research next time guys...I'm losing faith in this website.

  • Wow@pb4ugoout: You should work for giz then and set them straight. >.>
Well i say the touch is still super cool and the zune is going to get some support of bluetooth. (Most likely) If i was microsoft i would most certainly drop a bundle to get the Zune to have double everything that the touch has. But what Zune is losing is that people buy ipods mostly because of the swift interface, functionality, and of course they come out first. If there was a 2-Gen Zune it should've been released before the touch. They saw that multi-touch interface is getting super popular they're integrating to systems but they should try to integrate to Windows Mobile enabled phones, and they should integrate to just about anything that could get it that wont make the company look stupid.
So im screaming for Zune multi-touch even tho im goin2 get a touch.

  • I'm on ur site with my ipod touch, reason ur post's.

  • Jesus, I know it's the weekend but can we please have a photoshop of Stevie J. force-strangling an apple employee? Please!

Somebody needs to get their facts straight.

  • this is a dum story because theres no way of knowing if the unit has bluetooth or not unless you work for apple because most of these chips combined WiFi and Bluetooth radios, then can even make it work as a FM radio tunner if you want to, so dont give up your hope

  • this article is train-wreck

  • From a safari crash file off my ipod touch.

    0x325da000 - 0x325e6fff MobileBluetooth UUID (334DAC7E9D6E4FF6A0EA1FE240790F77) /System/Library/Frameworks/MobileBluetooth.framework/MobileBluetooth
    0x325ec000 - 0x325f0fff BluetoothManager UUID (DE3D2813092443A8B248A133DC9696A3) /System/Library/Frameworks/BluetoothManager.framework/BluetoothManager

So it seems like the Ipod Touch is has the Bluetooth code in there.
