Sony VAIO Type G: Another 12.1" Sub-notebook with 32GB Flash Drive That Doesn't Come from Cupertino

For those who think that June will never come, can't wait to get a sexy subnotebook with flash storage even if it doesn't come with Mac OS X and live in Japan, here's the new Sony VAIO Type G: a 12.1-inch notebook that not only comes under the 2 pounds mark (1.97 or 898 grams) battery included, but includes a 32 GB solid storage unit for $1,926.

The VAIO Type G comes short on power though: it only has a Core Solo U1300 running at 1.06GHz and the Intel 945GMS Express chipset doing the graphic work, with just up to 1.5GBytes of DDR2 RAM. Perhaps that's why it comes with Windows XP Pro instead of Vista. And perhaps that's why I will stick to my MacBook until Apple releases something better with a SDD.

Update: battery life with the standard battery and the SDD drive is 12 hours, but the total weight increases to 2.08 pounds (945 grams). With the small battery, Sony says it will last 6 hours

  • a 12" is just what I'm looking for, too bad its a Sony, their hardware sucks as much as Apple. With it being just 1.06GHz I'll just have to keep my 4 year old Dell Latitude 1.2GHz.

I guess leveraging an expensive drop-in replacement is one way to clear out the older hardware.

Heck, I'd like to tinker with a SSD drive myself just to see how things go and if it could bring my old hardware up a notch.

  • It would be worth it to me to buy the Sony and use the SSD in my other laptop. Hell, I might even return the Sony with the SATA from my HP.

  • Eugene... Are we in different realities? All I've ever owned are Sony & Apple, and they've been flawless (except for Windows, of course, but that's not Sony's fault)

  • I care. It's the best gadget I own. I use it every day to keep my calendar in synch and watch my Slingbox TV and Xvid movies on the plane and train. I like that I can do all that without draining my cellphone. I may have to get one more before they are gone forever.

  • @jawzxy
Even reading gizmodo for a while you can see all of Apple's and Sony's hardware faults, from overheating to battery problems to propritary parts, etc. I've worked in IT for years and Apple and Sony are at the worst for problems and their users are the worst for denying they have problems, they are both brands us IT people have learned to avoid as they are both designed for looks instead of quality.

  • 12" wide is the only form factor worth having.

  • no no no no guys....

you got it ass backwards; Sony suck at software not hardware. I think Sony are one of the best hardware makers in the business, but i wouldn't touch SonicStage with a 10 foot pole..

and is it just me or is that an optical drive.....

  • um.. is everyone overlooking the fact that this thing has hardware specs (except for the flash storage) that weren't even interesting 4 years ago all for 2 grand? Who the hell would pay 2000 for this?

  • Sony's hardware sucks too, the most recent suckage was their batteries.
Notice in my post I mentioned keeping my 4 year old Dell latitide which exceeds the specs of this, except my Dell is 3lbs and not 2 but IU only paid $1500 for it 4 years ago.

  • Following the trend around here... Yeah, i want my 12" under 2 pounds notebook to have 2Ghz Core 2 Duo, 2gigs ram and SLI graphics. Also a 200Gb usata drive and... bahh, you make the rest up

Even though the specs really aren't great, it's a Ultra low voltage processor, so it'll never be great, and at that weight the batteries aren't all that powerful, so forget a separate graphics card or a faster processor.

It's made for mobility, not for playing Doom ;)

  • c'mon, Mr. Diaz, you will stick with Apple even if Sony (or for that matter any other maker) will give you a laptop for free...

    but that is your money.

  • Well, if my 4 year old dell can meet those specs why can't a new one. At least pretty close, I have a G of Ram and a 120G drive but thats just because I put the drive in early last year and that was the biggest available then.

  • Now if they could only make this model a tablet as well it would be perfect. I goto college and my Toshiba M400 is a tad bit heavy but it's a billion times better than carrying binders of notes, eraser, and not to mention every textbook I could ever need.

  • Apple is expensive? I say, typing on my MBP 15 w160g SD, I bought for less than that piece of doo.

  • All the Sony products I've owned in the past 30yrs have been some of the best money spent (never had a hardware problem)... UNLESS you use the Sony written or modified software, then it suxs A$$!

  • Plus, all you Crapintosh fans are just haters cause the Vaios came out with the LED with SDD on the machines first! HaHa!

I have three crapintosh computers so don't hate me too much suckaz ^_^

  • First of all Eugene, your hardware does not compete with this, because your 4 year processor is a P4, this is entirely different architecture. Second I work in IT, and I personally hate Dell's, I have more problems with Dell's than anything else. Even the consumer reports numbers support this. If you don't like sony or apple, just don't post, leave your obnoxious rants to slashdot
