Those with weak stomachs, look away. Here is the power button on my newish Macbook Pro, which for some reason refuses to sit flush with the case.
Is this travesty happening to anyone else?
So much in love with shiny new toys, it's unnatural.

Not me, but my Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro refuses to sleep and gets so hot that the rear vents have warped. I wouldn't complain if I were you.
genius bar
this is not possible, macs are flawless...aren't they?
My MacBook Pro has the same defect. I didn't notice it at first, so I can only assume that it didn't come to me like this, but now the button sits a little bellow the main level of the speaker unit. It kinda makes me mad, but it isn't anything I am going to die over.

I have a MBP with the apple on the reverse of the screen sticking out a little. I can feel it as i glide myhand over it and it bothers me. But the one i had before this (my original one had more than frequent OS crashes) only one of the latches came down when closed and the screen was f-ed up so im happy with aslightly raised apple logo. I'm picky i know
You think that is bad, you should see my girlfriends MacBook...massive screen flicker, extreemly dirty case that won't come clean, and for some reason she can't import CD's into iTunes. I watched her take a brand new CD, unwrap it, put it in, digitize it at high quality 128 AAC file, and it would not take a couple of the tracks. And it acts up while using it a lot too. Apples own software on the laptop that came installed on it will randomly stop working in the middle of using it. ITs been a major pain. Its at AppleCare right now. I hope they fix it. I have not had good luck with apple stuff here of late.
Quit slamming it with your fat sausage fingers :)
Heck, the screen on my 17Powerbook is so bowed that I could slip a comic book under it when the screen is latched down.
Stop mashing it so hard!
Wow, what the heck is that? Is it? No! Wait, I think it is! It really looks like it is. Is that another chink in the apple armour? Can it be true? Everything apple is perfect, is it not? Oh no, the end is near. There must be a third party to blame!
I just purchased a new 17" MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo and it has quite poor build quality. Unfortunately it was a custom build and I was therefore unable to send it back to Apple. I had two major problems. The first is just as the reviewer has described. In fact, if I did not press the power button just so, it would become stuck. I took the machine apart and looked at the power button. I found that there is a small lip on the bottom of the power button and a retaining ring that fits up inside it. My retaining ring had not been installed properly. I located a retaining ring tool and was able to seat it properly, and my power button was much improved. Unfortunately, the other problem is much more difficult. The bottom panel on the machine is severely warped, and I have to put about 1/16" worth of business cards underneath one corner in order to keep the machine from tottering around when I type on it. I contacted Apple customer service and they told me that they could do nothing since it was a custom build from their Web site (I ordered the 200 GB hard disk). The genius bar at my local Apple store has also refused to do anything about it. I am not a happy camper!
Dude you should really take that Macbook Pro back to the store. The earlier Core Duo's had alot of problems. But I alot of people have told me that the problems have been all but fixed in the new Core 2 Duo models.
They have fancy looking products but for quaility they aren't to great.
almost every other MBP on display at the stores that i have seen are like that from all the random people running around pressing it down to the floor -
not really a flaw as it is carelessness
I have the exact same button problem on my mbp c2d except mine isn't so deep inside the case. Quite unpleasant surprise on a $2k laptop and especially on a mac... :-/
It's weird how I've never seen anyone even come close to saying that Apple hardware is "flawless," and yet every time a problem is reported, a bunch of REALLY HILARIOUS people decide it's time to say "What's this? You mean Apple computers aren't perfect?"
Real original, guys.
You've got to laugh, really.
jesus its a POWER BUTTON not a switch.
I press this thing hard and it doesnt even budge, what did you do take a fucking weight and hold it over it?
Currently my cap-open-button-thingi (if this is the word) is stuck in the case. And my iPod mini's clickwheel also looks like your power-button...someone beat these chinese dudes harder!
I'm on my third MBP since they released the Core 2 Duos. The first one, the latch broke off after normal use, the second, a fan inside broke and caused the some stuff inside to fry, and now on my third there's a nasty dead pixel in the middle of the screen.
I regret ever becoming a switcher. Plus the performance ain't so hot compared to a PC. I've seen the "shut down screen" twice already and random haults in between switching programs like Photoshop and Flash.
you know, I'm sure you could take all the Mac content and produce Macmodo and continue to feature real news on Gizmodo, giving Mac fan-boys a place to pray and hold religious services while giving non-Mac users (the majority of people) a place to read news they care about.
ummmm, maybe it's recessed for a reason?
Disgrauis: Refreshing to see that I am not alone concerned about this gizmodo mutation into a mac-wanking showcase.
It is just out of control.
I have a macbook pro 17in and the only problem I have is keeping it clean.
Keep up the good work, Giz. I for one am a multi-platform gadget freak and want to read it all - here.
Dis/Marth: Just because you guys are anti-mac zealots does not mean that apple gadgets, and related news does not constitute worthy information, not only for the fans of the product, but fans of the website (all things gizmo-like. Look at any tech/gadget blog and you will see the aforementioned "mac-wanking", as the fact of the matter is, is it is a subject pertaining to the topics of these blogs.
Wow, first Apple forgets to peel the plastic off the vents on the 'books, now this? At this rate they'll be in bankruptcy before the [insert non-litigious iPhone replacement name here] ever hits the market. :) I'm joking. Don't sass me.
Yes, they actually designed the power button to be crookedly recessed. Asymmetry = high design.
And those people complaining about screens being "warped" and latches "not closing"? They simply lack the ability to think outside of the box.
The screens are not "warped", they simply feature a unique contour. The latches aren't "broken", they're just designed to allow you to open your laptop with less effort.
Geeze, people. When will you stop doubting Apple's perfection? Any "defects" are actually unique design elements which differentiate your beautiful new MacBook from all others. Like those clothes you see at the store that have had a cheese grater taken to them. Failure to appreciate them as such simply proves that you have been brainwashed by the PC clone mentality.
APPLE CAN DO NO WRONG!!! PRODUCTION FLAWS FTW!
hahahahaha
pc:1 apple:0
HAHAHAHA!
PC:1 APPLE:0
I just bought MBP 3 days ago, had a glossy screen on accident and returned it, that power button felt totally flush, but I exchanged for anti-glare and this is 30 hours old and i can feel the left side of the button is lower than the right side. I can feel the edge bezel from 4 oclock to 12 oclock where the rest is flush. I have not pressed this thing with anymore pressure then needed to say click a pen. Just for your info. Thanks for posting the warning/picture so i know to tread lightly. I hate reformatting machines after repairs/exchanges!
PS: Does anyone know how to eject Cheez-it's from that slot on the left side, I thought it was a toaster...? (was drunk)
Misapplosophy=Study of Apple hatred.
I don't get it. Tons of articles showing the WiiLove; no one complains that Giz has turned into a WiiWankFest. Tons of iPod articles. No complaints. A story on the Mac? Cue the monkeys bashing out bleatings on Giz' being a Macsturbation station.
It's a freakin' computer. It now runs Windows. Get over it for the love of gawd. Go hate Mac users somewhere else.
Disclaimer: I have one of the first MBPs released; it was my daily home PC primarily used with XP. Love the industrial design, hated the quirks and the weird assed form over function compromises. Decided I wanted something with more graphics HP, didn't want to dish out for a Dell XPS so ordered a whitebox Clevo M570u. Add CPU, RAM and HDD of choice and voila.
Wow. Build quality, speed, and for a 17", still reasonable size. Better yet, it doesn't fry your balls on contact and has faster graphics than most desktops. MBP is now on a shelf gathering dust.
Give me a break... before you post something like this, why don't you ask Apple to fix it!?! They have industry leading customer service. I've had mac products for more than a decade, and the few times I've had minor problems Apple has done an outstanding job of fixing them. This isn't "news", it is "whining".
This exact thing happened to me a couple of weeks ago on my MBP. I had the first 15" 2.33GHz Core 2 Duo that came into the Apple Store after the release.
When I brought it in, they said that they've never seen anything like that before, and it wouldn't be covered under warranty because it's physical damage.
Now, I've taken care of my MBP like nothing else--my wife feels jealous at times--and I am the only person that uses it, so it shocked me to have this happen.
I told them that there is no way that I could have done it and asked them to actually prove that this wasn't a defect. The guy said that the only way something like this would happen is from excessive force, but I found it funny that he would know the (supposedly only) exact cause, yet, as mentioned earlier, they had never seen anything like it before.
He said that he'd try to get it repaired in-store on the down-low by saying he broke it while fixing something else, but only if they had a replacement part in stock... they did have one, but, uh, WHY would they have a replacement part if... yeah... THEY HAVE NEVER SEEN IT BEFORE?
Fast-forward a couple of days with it in the shop: they call me up to tell me it's repaired and that it was covered by warranty.
I don't remember off the top of my head what the repair was recorded as, but I can pull out my receipt if you need me to.
Appears it's tipping toward the 11th dimension. Gravity leaks there, so spare no effort to resolve this promptly at the Genius Bar. Otherwise, well, the universe could slip off the brane it's connected to. I know nothing more, really. Do it.
Amen, jrlittlejr. It's ridiculous to expect that a product priced at a 30-50% premium over other comparably spec'd hardware would be manufactured properly. MAYBE if it was three times the price of equivalent hardware you could expect to avoid having to exchange it five times to get a machine without manufacturing defects. But then people would just whine even more about the price. People need to learn that they get what they pay for and stop complaining. Seriously.
my button area has not fallen like your, but my power button only goes down on one side, in the same manner as your button enclosure.
17" MBP C2Duo
Anything mass produced will always have flaws in it. I don't care what kind of sampling rate your quality program has, if human intervention is included, the manufacturing process will produce flaws that make it to the consumer...
With that said, all the Apple products I've ever owned have been perfect.. ;-)
your right, and when you show me that product I would love to see it cause it aint Apple whos computers actually come out cheaper than most comparably spec'd hardware.
Of course Apple bashers refuse to admit that part.
It's so ironic that every article that bashes Apple for it's quality only reinforces it's image as a company that delivers high quality products.
Why do Dell users not whine about their quality problems? Because, they do not expect quality from Dell.
Apple is now delivering over a million macs per quarter. Most manufacturers in Asia are only capable of achieving 3-sigma process quality. That means 2700 defects out of 1 million.
Do the math.
Had it happen to my old Powerbook, I'd take it in like someone else suggested. It never got any worse after it sank the first bit, but it always annoyed me. Best of luck!
I'm not an Apple basher myself, or at least in terms of MBP's. That's a pretty decent product, in my opinion. The iPod and iMac...well...that's a discussion for another time. The MBP is nice, but for specs/$ ratio you can't beat a Clevo, who makes laptops and distributes them. For those who don't know, all of the suspiciously identical Alienware, Voodoo, Monarch, Cyberpower, Hypersonic, etc. laptops are Clevos. With the price jacked up up to 2x.
Search Clevo or Sager and you'll find some decently priced places. Not the Sager website itself, though. There are cheaper variants. The 17", identically-spec'd Sager/Clevo beats out the MBP 17" and even 15.4" MBP, which is rather nice.
However, no one wants to reveal this "secret" for some reason. Not even the Giz. And especially not CNet.
Apple designs, Hon Hai Precision assembles.
End of story.
Haters, keep hating, just be better informed next time.

Hon Hai Precision does not assemble MBP, Just fyi.
Looks normal to me.
the power button is held to the top case by a ring of adhesive around it. i usually pop them out of scrap top cases, since i figure i'll find some use for a nifty little metal switch some day.
but yeah, new top case would fix that right up.
Wow. I thought all the jokes about Apple fanboys being freakish cultists obsessed with all things Mac, from the cardboard used in the packaging to the placement of the power buttons... I though all those jokes were just exaggerations before.... but after reading through the content of this thread I can see now... errrr... {nervous cough} yes I can see now how COMPLETELY OVERBLOWN all that was. Why, you guys are totally normal. PCs! BAH... who needs 'em I say! Edge bezels my friends! Rings of adhesive to you sir! {chuckles uneasily}... *ahem* um anyway carry on fellas!
{backs up slowly out of the thread, holding breath and tiptoeing the whole while}
The trackpad on a new Macbook I bought for my wife was peeling off.
@ gigermunit
Genius pure genius!
That sucks.... Genius Bar time.
My MBP from April 06 is still going good. The only problems I've had have been with batteries, which Apple has replaced twice without question.
I'd love a new C2D MBP, but there's really nothing I need in the way of upgraded features, so I'm sticking with my current model.
As with all devices... even from Apple, things are not always 100% perfect.
i would want to turn it off forever too but i would just drop kick it instead of hammering the power button
My 15 inch MBP arived with the trackpad actually raised above the rest of the case on one side, about the same amount that it is sunken in on the other...and yeah, it pisses me off...
My 15 inch MBP also had the same track pad problem (raised on one side) and the '4' key didn't work so well.
I took it in to the Apple Store later that week and they said they would switch the keyboard out for a new one. Well, I got it back with a new keyboard, 3 new scratches, and the eject button was crooked (again, higher on one side).
Fortunately, someone broke into my house and stole my computer. Thank god for renters' insurance. I got a brand new machine (core 2 duo!) and haven't had any problems since.
