Eee Lights Up Like Christmas Whenever a Message Comes In
With all the lights that adorn modern notebooks, it's truly a shame that most of them aren't at all useful. One modder, sharing this philosophy, added a 3-color LED to an Asus Eee 901 to track incoming messages. More » -

Chandelier Features Removable Bulbs for Migrant Families
The Drop Light is just a concept, but there's nothing going on here that's outside the realm of real world engineering. A normal light fixture at first glance, each bulb actually houses a rechargeable battery and a cool-burning LED, allowing, say, little Mary and Patrick to remove the fixture's globes and take them around the house to read and do homework. Then again, every night at dinner could become one big blame game over who lost all of the light bulbs...again...before Mary flips out and Patrick says everything's cool and Mary grabs a knife and Patrick says be careful and Mary drops the knife crying and Dad admits he took a bulb to work and the family has a group hug and Mary gets checked in to a care facility just in case. OLED Room Lights Nearer as BASF, Osram Break Brightness Record
OLED technology keeps getting cooler: first there was the "true blue" invention, and now there's news that BASF and Osram have broken the brightness record. For the first time a white OLED has achieved an efficiency of over 60 lumens per Watt, plus the device's light output falls within the international Energy Star SSL Standard for color for the first time: meaning it keeps its color even when lit at different intensities. The team reckons they'll be able to push it to 100 lumens per watt, which definitely points the way for energy-efficient OLED room lighting. [OLED-Display] -

Samsung Demonstrates Folding OLED Cellphone, Vindicates Thousands of Ridiculous Concepts
Buried amongst the piles of Newer! Bigger! Better! TVs, pico projectors and paper-thin, flapping OLED screens at FPD in Japan was an absolute gem: a folding OLED phone concept from Samsung. This isn't some half-assed, flat-to-sightly-bowed demo either: this thing folds over on itself completely. In its folded mode it looks quite similar to the D900, but the phone opens like a book to reveal a massive, bright OLED screen, creased down the middle. While we've got this luscious, luscious video, we don't have much in the way of specs, and it goes without saying that this stuff is probably a long way from making it to market. [OLED Display] -

Make's LED History Movie Is Pretty Cool, Includes DIY Instructions
We all take LEDs pretty much for granted, but the guys over at MAKE have done a good job with this movie that shows the history behind the little glowing things. Turns out the Light Emitting Diode was one of those devices that was more or less discovered by accident, during an experiment at Marconi labs into a Cat's-Whisker Schottky barrier diode made from a chunk of silicon carbide: so MAKE, of course, shows you how to recreate that for yourself. Check it out: it's fascinating stuff. [Makezine] -

Huge Spinning Blade POV Display is Not for Kids
We've seen some cool POV display setups in the past, like this bicycle spoke Obama propaganda message, but I don't recall one that could both amaze a person and take their limbs off at the same time. Called the "Display from Hell," that's pretty much what this thing does, all while projecting POV images using 100 blue SMD LEDs. The propeller, which spins at 140mph and is both huge and terrifying, was apparently rigged up for a party. A very dangerous party. From hell. [Hackaday, thanks Joao!] -

17,000 Square Foot LED Billboard Flipped On at 1 Times Square, Wraps Around Entire Building
When we first wrote about this comically huge Walgreens LED sign — the largest of its kind in the world — construction was just getting under way. That was May, and now they're done. D3 LED, the firm behind the sign, finally turned on this 17,000 square foot, 340ft tall, three-sided tribute to technical and commercial excess — and what timing! But before we start challenging the rationale behind displaying 300ft moving Tampax ads, it's worth looking at the extraordinary tech inside this thing. More » -

Carbon Nanotube-Coated Threads Make Wearable, Biosensing Electronics
Wonder material the carbon nanotube has another new application: A team at the University of Michigan has worked out how to coat cotton threads with a polymer and nanotube mix to produce conductive mini-cables. Conductive threads per se aren't new, but they generally involve metal which limits their utility—this new material is flexible enough to be woven, won't corrode, and can carry enough current to light up an LED. Crazily the tubes are also suitable for clinical and chemical biosensing, which could point the way for uses in future military wear. [TechnologyReview] -

LED Bracelet Flashlight Frees Up Both Hands For Work
Most of you probably know how annoying it is to work on something like an engine or a computer with a flashlight in one hand and a tool in the other. This bracelet helps free up both hands using four built-in LEDs—and it comes in packs of two so you can wear one on each wrist while you work. It's a great idea, but I suppose your friends and fellow mechanics will be unable to risk a joke or two at your expense. Something like: "did you forget your purse today?" and "where's the rave party boy?" Available for $20. [Computer Gear via BookofJoe via Coolest Gadgets] -
