Exclusive Apple iPhone 360 degree Gallery: 50 Photos of the Jesus Phone

It's in a glass case, with a security guard watching over to make sure no one does anything stupid. I asked him if he has authority to use lethal force, and he just smiled and said, "I couldn't hurt anyone."

  • Apple does it again. Thank God this company is around to push DESIGN. Design, folks, not just function. Remember that, Microsoft and Samsung and Creative Labs and everyone else who has no clue what design is. Kids, go major in Industrial Design if you want to be in on this.

  • So, since I hate Cingular, but since they *are* GSM, and I have T-Mobile, what kind of lock can they possibly have from me using it for my carrier? As of the 1st of January (I think) carriers cannot lock phones.

That and ME WANT ME WANT ME WANT!

  • wow. Although I don't like anything thats associated with Apple (just never really did). I really like that design for the phone. Great work.

  • Ooooh, it's soooo pretty. I can't believe I have to wait until June :(

  • They might try and lock this at a hardware level .

  • Is it just me or is the giz 49 photos short of 50 here?

  • While I appreciate Sizemodo, the comparison to a Treo 750 does me no good.

How about including some more common household objects in the comparison? Say, the ever popular credit card or pack-o-cigs?

  • I'm wondering if Cingular will be able to offer any sort of rebates on that $499-599 price tag

  • If you switch to T-Mobile you will lose visual voicemail for one. I bet you willlose other features as well.

  • I noticed that too. Where are the rest of the pics? I need more Apple pr0n.

  • Hell I'm prepared to dump T-Mobile in a second for this phone and it's features.

Sorry T-Mobile, it's been nice but.... No iPhone, me no payee you money!!

  • uhm... where's the gallery?

  • They CAN'T lock it on a HW level. it will have ot be done on the sw level. isn't there law about doing that??

  • 600 bucks!!!!!
I've converted friends to mac's, but this would be a hard sell. 600 bones for a phone, plus a dry corncob up the anus in the form of a cingular contract. Hmm...any word on battery replacement? If you have access to the sim, maybe you have access to the battery? I'd the ipod capabilities, web, etc will suck down the juice.

  • I would think the push email from yahoo would also require support form the service provider.

  • WiFi + OS X = VOIP? Or maybe they lock that down for the benefit of Cingular.

  • I'd buy one if they increased it to like 20 Gigs or so...

  • Ohhhh we wants.... we needs!

My only prob is that my current (Verizon) contract expires in April, but this phone doesn't come out till June.

  • I'm already dreaming of controlling my whole home through the wifi on this sucker! Oh the possibilities! Can I have one now for a grand? By July it could be nuclear powered or something, so maybe waiting isn't too bad!

  • Has anyone noticed that the interface for this phone harkens back to the newton a little bit? Especially the "drawers" it uses in the the photo app.

I have never been happier to be a cingular customer and out of contract! Now if only June were here and my 8gb iPhone were too!

  • I like the design, I won't deny it.
    It is sleek and thin.

    Now back to earth...
I've seen similar designs on other currently manufactured phones that carry no "i" as a prefix and run on Symbian or WM5. So this is totally overhyped.

I'm sure that there will be a lot of fine good quality iPods on ebay soon because all Apple fans MUST have one.
The marketing plot is fantastic and the sucker base is huge... They will sell millions.

  • My understanding of the new law about locked cell phones is providers can still lock them, it's just not illegal for a third party unlock them. The unlocking used to be illegal because it was included under the DMCA.

  • Kruel: Just keep paying your monthly fees until whenever you decide to switch. Once your contract runs out, you're good to leave, but if you don't want to you don't need to sign a new one. Unless of course, Verizon really IS the antichrist, in which case your screwed anyway.

To everyone else: CINGULAR? WTF APPLE! I was looking at their "plan" options...they blow. and if you want something with a decent amount of minutes + MMS + data...you're looking at close to $90/month, before taxes and "fees". That's insane.

The lack of VoIP mentioned leads me to believe that Apple are not doing everything they /should/ be doing to make this phone truly revolutionary.

Also, $600 w/ a 2-year contract with the devil is something I'm not prepared to pay, no matter how badly I want this phone. I've heard awful terrible things about Cingular as well.

Perhaps in June things will look different. Steve-o said something about Cingular's networks being upgraded to handle the additional features the iPhone will have (the viewable voicemail thing, plus maybe some other stuff). So, we'll see, we'll see.

  • Any voice recognition on the iPhone? I haven't seen any mention of VR so far.

I've been using a touchscreen phone for about half a year now and because of the lack of a tactile keyboard, I've found VR very useful on numerous occasions.

What a gorgeous phone, btw. For once, a truly cool-looking phone is coming out of the USA and not Korea or Japan.

  • I want to see the back of it, any pictures of that?

  • I'm leaving T-Mobile. It really makes sense for me anyway. My parents and most of my friends are on Cingular. I can just get on my parents' family plan.

  • I've heard bad things about Cingular's coverage (I live in NYC). Though I'm in the market for a smartphone and this look awfully tempting.

@Kruel. You don't have to sign a new contract. Like nachobel says above, pay your monthly bill as normal. That's what I did for after my contract with Verizon ran out and I didn't have a contract for years. Though Verizon will probably keep calling you and tempting you with a free phone if you renew your contract, but otherwise you don't have to do anything.

  • I've just cum in my pants!

  • no camera???? THis phONe Is oFFiciALly BulLSheet!!!

  • "600 bucks!!!!!
I've converted friends to mac's, but this would be a hard sell. 600 bones for a phone, plus a dry corncob up the anus in the form of a cingular contract."

Amen.. It looks mighty fine, but $600? no thanks.

  • no qwerty, 6.5" tall 3.5" wide, $600.. and what does it do that other smartphones don't?

the only thing new is the mobile OS X. I'd like to see it in other hardware.

  • This is great news. I love Cingular because their plans are the cheapest of all carriers if you use primetime the most -- rollover minutes for the win! I've been maxed at 3000 rollover per month for the past 2 years on the cheapest plan (400 min). And most people use Cingular and it is free to talk to other members. The problem with Cingular? They have the WORST phone selection, especially compared to Verizon and TMobile. But this news changes everything!

I just called Cingular and the rep didn't even know about this iPhone yet. Screw the PS3, I'm getting the iPhone...I'll reserve it if I have to money down!!

I don't own a single apple product, but I always liked their mp3 players. The iPhone is just unbelieveable. I'm converted.

  • I have to admit, this thing is more than enough to make me want to flush my Blackberry pearl (along with my T-mobile contract) down the toilet.

  • yeah, I wanna see the top, bottom, and back! Ports, man, ports!

  • hehe.. just as for gas you are spoiled.. :) When this phone is released in Norway it will not be locked to any carriers, and there will be no serviceplans, but my guess is that it will cost 1200 $ easily, but people will buy it, me included!

  • I want to have it's babies.

  • Plus - What happened to that bit about Cisco Systems owning the trademark name "iPhone." Steve alluded to it in the keynote but was vague. Was it all a marketing slight of hand?

Obviously, for now, the iPhone will be for corporate and semi-well-off elites. These people, with data plans on Treo, aren't batting an eye for a $500 Treo and $80+/month voice and high speed data service.

  • THANK YOU for shots of the back and sides. I would really have preferred more physical buttons. For example, every iPod has a HOLD button. Shouldn't a touch-screen device have a physical HOLD button too? This is more minimalist that it needs to be, and functionality suffers for the sake of aesthetics.

Cingular's coverage in NYC is asinine. I have to lie halfway dangling off my bed to even get one bar.

So, to use the iPhone with Cingular, what kind of plan would you have to get? I'm currently just on a normal phone but I'm assuming they have some sort of plan that they currently extend to Treo/Blackberry users and that would be the relevant service plan?

  • Cingular is great where I live. Their coverage and reception far outperforms the likes of Sprint, Verizon Wireless, and T-Mobile. I've also never had problems with any of their reps.

Provider service simply varies from place to place.

My only beef with Cingular is that they have been excruciatingly slow about updating their networks here, we still only have GPRS.

Once they start offering phones with WiFi here, though, no one's going to be able to touch them.

  • Ok--I'm gonna be a bit of a buzzkiller here: does anybody agree that this thing looks huge and uncomfortable (at least as far as the phone function is concerned)? My talking arm is getting tired as I type, and my ear is already starting to flatten and sweat!

    Heavy + Blocklike = OUCHY!

  • Hey nice Fi Interface
    http://www.fantasy-interactive.com/#aol_digital

    who did what first??

  • I've been hearing in the past few hours how $599 plus contract isn't all that much from a lot of people who I personally know couldn't possibly afford this without borrowing cash or charging it to a card.

...and people wonder why Americans have such a low savings rate and so much debt.

  • So, help me out here, Mac fans.. $600 for a PS3 that can play HD movies and video games with a 60 gig hard drive to store downloaded content and so forth is highway robbery. But $600 for a PSP sized phone is something that you 'gotta have'?

In any case, the price point is not that much different from the competition (Treo, for example). However, the major difference there is that businesses buy Treo devices for their staff, and individuals buy Apple products. How many individuals can afford $600 for a phone plus the ridiculous data rates that Cingular charges? I suspect there will be a lot of surprised individuals when they start receiving monthly phone bills of $100+ due to data charges on their iPhone.

But, I have to agree with everyone else.. The look of the phone is magnificent.

  • Gosh..thats one hell of an awesome design, well if you have a T-mobile account and you want to use this phone, what you need is a friend who has Cingular account and have 'em unlock this phones easily.

  • Nice phone but it sucks to be tied up by a single provider, now my Ipod dictates which provider I can use, sad really. Very expansive compared with other cell/pda's and whatever happened with the service agreement discount when you sign a 1-2 year commitment? Another down side is that 4GB and 8GB are hardly enough specially now that you can get over 4gb on a memory stick I was hoping for a 80-100+ megabyte to hold all my movies, music and pics.
