DIY Overclocked Flashlight—An Arsonist's Dream

Got an arsonist in your family and have no idea what to get him or her this holiday season? Why not build an overclocked Maglite capable of actually burning objects? This Maglite hybrid uses a Osram Sylvania light bulb "overclocked" to 80 times its standard luminosity. Power the sucker up with 12 1200mV NiMH batteries and you have a Christmas tree fire waiting to happen. – Travis Hudson

4-LED Maglites Coming In May

Reader Brian sent an email to Maglite inquiring about their 4-LED series that was promised "in 2006." The result was an actual email sent by a human being rather than the canned ejaculate of a mailbot. Let's listen in:

Here is the schedule we plan to use to deliver our Mag-LED lights: 2, 3 & 4 cell D Maglites in Black will be available in May or June LED upgrade kits for the D cells will be available in June or July 2 and 3 cell AA Mag-LEDs will be available in July or August No upgrade kits will be produced for the AA and AAA lights. The new products will be found in most Hardware and discount stores.

Very nice.

Bulb-To-LED Conversion For MAG

You may (or may not) remember when we reported that MAG was going to release LED-based flashlights. Well if you or Johnny Law just can't wait and demand the battery life and power of LEDs, this is for you. TerraLUX (hmm, perhaps they made the Luxor's huge beam? That's where the Gizmodo-ites are staying for CES, BTW. Stop by and ask for VV cause he'll be taking clients all week!) has released a replacement LED conversion for Maglites that use AA or AAA batteries. The brightness and ability to focus the beam will stay the same and no mods are needed, so put that soldering iron down. A replacement bulb that uses an LED is $20, but you know you want to be the first kid on the block with the LED Maglite.
