Unfortunately for electronic table fetishists everywhere, you won't be able to walk into a restaurant, a casino or a retail outlet and play with a Microsoft Surface table until spring of next year. Why isn't it surfacing until then? Partners.
Partners who need Microsoft's help to build custom apps to fit Harrah's, Sheraton and T-Mobile needs for gambling, sleeping and phone choosing. Beyond the delay, Microsoft also has some interesting plans to expand from just the retail and hospitality industry to government, education and enterprise businesses to eventually, as Gates predicts, be on "every table," "every whiteboard," "every mirror" within 5 to 10 years. sdk's baby.
couldn't hurt to open-source some of the code either, but hey, whatever.
Not sure if they are still listed but there were about 10 positions listed on the MS job site for the surface project.
Every table, every whiteboard, every mirror ---
???WTF???
Didn't Billy say that we'd all be using Tablets by now?
If Xbox gives any indication on MS hardware, then Surface Table is one hell of expensive kids table.
No, picky customers are NOT to blame. What's to blame is that this "product" was never more than a jerry-rigged, gussied-up demo Microsoft whipped together by taping a couple of projectors to the bottom of a table so that they could pretend they had a multi-touch thing going, too, when Apple announced the iPhone.
Show me one person who thought at the time they announced this that it was anywhere close to being a practical, usable, affordable, shipping product and I will show you AN IDIOT.
@EMoShunz: How DARE you speak the "o-s"-word in reference to Microsoft?!?
@kevjohn: they may not have much of a choice if the EU has a say :P
I've been impressed by some of the demo videos of this except for one thing: It screams back cramps and knots. Especially because there's no room under it for your legs so you can get really close...your knees will always be right up against it while your try to extend yourself over it to look directly at the screen. A cooler version might be like the interface used in "The Island" or the display being vertical, but the control surface horizontal...but then I guess that defeats the purpose of the direct interaction they've set up. I also imagine the table top would look like my iPhone x 1000 in terms of greasy smears.
Gee, cool, now if they would only shrink it and wire it for cell comms they'd have...an iPhone?
@jaiku: The iPhone cannot detect and identify objects placed on top of it. This can.
@Mio: How about a finger...
So if you put your dick on the table will it start showing porn? Or if you set a big bowl of greasy chips on it it'll show you one of those heart operation tv shows, or maybe a Richard Simmons workout? And you know some dill weed will stick their bare ass on the table. Will it yell at them "Get that nasty ass offa me, you perv! Go take a shower before I post this on your FaceBook."
The mind boggles... One critical question I must ask, as a long-time MSFT slave...err...user is: How long does it take to re-boot?
Bullshitware.
BTS.WRKNG got it right.
@jaiku: I'm never going to eat off any table at your house....hahaha.
@bts.wrkng & @adnonymous:
Correct me if I'm wrong, but they're going for a completely different market than the iPhone... This is not for consumers to buy, it's for businesses to use to dazzle customers, and it would be customized to perform whatever tasks the particular company wants. As such, it's open-ended. It's not an iPhone that does specific things, the same for everyone. Also, to the "affordable" aspect, you and I may not go out and spend $5 - $10K, but for companies like T-Mobile and Sheraton that's chump change. And like they say, once it starts dropping below $5K, it will also be affordable to consumers.
@jaiku: cant help but laugh man, hope that surfave is capable of doin that! muahahaha
surface i mean im sorry mybad..
This thing is so cool. I want one.
i cant wait, hope around for this technology.
