Dell Inspiron Mini 12 Review
The Dell Inspiron Mini 12 is a bit confused. It packs an Intel Atom processor, which makes it a netbook. But it also has a 12-inch screen, which exceeds our definition of what a netbook can be. On one hand it's a natural evolution of the genre in an ever growing screen size arms race, topping the 10-inchers like a razor company adding another blade. On the other, the Inspiron Mini 12 reaches a size and pricepoint that makes it comparable to far more capable systems from Dell in the same pricerange. -

Dell Inspiron Mini 12 Starts at $549
The Dell Inspiron Mini 12, Dell's upcoming 12-inch netbook, has been priced for the US. The 1.33GHz Atom version with 1GB RAM, 40GB storage, and Vista Home will start at $549. The 1.6GHz version with 60GB storage and 6-cell battery will debut at $599 (or $654 after promo). And if you're interested in the high end version with 80GB hard drive with a 2-year warranty, that'll run you $678 (or $758 after promo). All models are available with white or black lid and will ship in December. At a glance, the $599 model is the only purchase that makes sense. [Dell via Electronista] -

Apple Quarterly Earnings: 6.9 Million iPhones Sold, "More Phones Than RIM"
Though Apple's live broadcast of its fourth quarter earnings doesn't start for another few minutes, they've already dumped the numbers on us. Here are the important ones: 6.9 million iPhones, 2.6 million Macs, and 11 million iPods. Wryly noting that "we sold more phones than RIM," Steve Jobs says they're still not sure how the recession is going to affect them, but whatever, bitches, they've got "$25 billion of cash safely in the bank with zero debt." We'll be following the call live in the post below, in case any other news breaks—like the death of the Mac mini. Update: Steve is on the call, says that iPhone is now 39 percent of their business, Apple is now world's "third largest mobile phone supplier." More » -

$5,000 Chinese Electric Car Is 100% Power Grid Independent
While I admit that this Zhejiang 001's mini car looks rather wacky and utilitarian thanks to its solar top, I wouldn't mind looking like a dork if that can save me gas or electric power—if I had to have a car, that is. This one can charge using the sun electricity in 30 hours, giving it a 93-mile range. According to the engineer, it can only transform 14 to 17 percent of the sun light, which is the usual. But in the middle of a recession, for $5,560 and no gas or electricity expenses, we can live with "usual" and "fugly" just fine. [Gasgoo via OhGizmo] -

This Brando Super Tiny Keyboard Could Be Smaller (In My Mind)
We've crossed the palm-sized threshold in the contest for the tiniest USB keyboard. Joel lusts for this one, and yet, Chen does not think such a device would be useful without a cellphone connector — Why? Cellphones already have text entry and clearly the USB keyboard's utility is all about its size. I can't wait for these to get even smaller and I will be there watching when they collide with smartphone-sized QWERTYs. I defend these fantasy gadgets' difficulty of use by the fact that you'll be able to keep a spare on your keychain one day. [Brando via BBG] -

Rumor Smash: Dell Inspiron Mini 9 Doesn't Have Hidden 3G Powers (Yet)
Even though Vodafone is gleefully selling Dell's Inspiron Mini 9 with built-in 3G, it turns out that Mini 9s sold in the US actually don't possess latent 3G powers like that annoying kid on Heroes. A solid source close to the matter told us that while every Mini 9 uses the same motherboard with a port for integrated mobile broadband ('cause it's cheaper than using two versions), the mini 9s sold so far in the US don't have the antenna or radio for 3G. However, they will by the end of the year, with Dell's usual range of mobile broadband options. -

Dell Inspiron Mini 9 Available Now: Windows XP $399, Ubuntu $349
The way Dell introduced the Inspiron Mini 9 was pretty inspired, so it's almost been depressing watching the steady stream of leaks deflate it into a now familiar device, even though it's only being released today. As leaked, inside is an Intel Atom Diamondville processor and it has a 1024x600 LED-backlit screen with 4, 8 and 16GB SSD options (plus you get 2GB free online storage at Box.Net) and about three hours of battery life. Only the Windows XP version is available now for $399, in black or white—the $349 Ubuntu flavor, along with the rest of the six-color rainbow are a few weeks away. Update: You can pick one up for $99 if you buy another Dell AND it has 3G hidden inside.

Dell Studio Hybrid Mini PC Spotted in Spy Shots
Dell's got a mini PC on the way dubbed the Studio Hybrid, and judging by the blurry spy shots it looks a lot like the "Green" PC that launched, without details, earlier in the year. The clear orange case looks like something you'd find in a European nightclub, but we can't complain about the 320GB HDD, 4GB RAM, five USBs, HDMI, DVI, S/PDIF, DVD+R and memory card reader inside. No official word on release date or price, but we're hearing it'll be out later this year in the $500-$700 range. [Engadget] -

Dell Inspiron Mini Due Later This Summer
We're finally getting some more bits on Dell's lil' Inspiron. Most importantly, Dell's confirmed a quasi-release date: later this summer, which is behind the rest of the ultraportable pack because they've been working so hard on the keyboard, apparently, which is now a bit different than the one Blam saw. And Inspiron Mini is the name that's "been bandied out." Other than that, Dell's holding tight on info: no specs (probably Atom/XP though), price or anything else. Guess we'll know soon enough. Exclusive: Dell Mini Inspiron, Their First Mini Laptop
I bumped into Michael Dell at All Things D after his interview, and he was nice enough to show me this laptop that he was carrying that he said no one's seen before. It's a small form factor notebook, just like the Asus Eee and the HP 2133. He wouldn't tell me what OS it's running, or the pricing, but that it's a low-cost notebook meant for developing countries, and I hope here. Maybe it's Atom-powered. Who knows? But I do see three USB ports, a card reader, VGA out, Ethernet, and that red candy shell. I couldn't tell how big the screen was before it was tucked away into a black sleeve and ushered from the building, but it's small. Update: Dell just released a pair of shots that add to the sense of scale, but no official name yet.
