One of the big projects at the iPod touch mods blog is snappy homemade mic dongle for VoIP that neatly fits into the dock connector. They've been documenting the process over the last couple weeks, and now they're finally ready to take orders. It's small, black and looks anything but DIY. They don't have a price listed, but the most recent post implores that you don't "hesitate too much and ask for your Mic. Be one of the very firsts who will make the Touch-4-VoIP become a reality!" Good porn name? Mike Dongle. Or Mick Dongle.
Any word on when VOIP software will be released for iphone/iPod Touch..?
@Keonar: You spend a thou on an iPhone and then cheap out for VoIP? Man. You need some practice on this whole "status symbol" thing.
awesome...
Very cool!
This looks like a great break for iPhone owners.
I'm sure they'll think up all kinds of cool applications for it as well!
What a great idea, well done!:)
One thing that would be really useful after this if you want to, would be a bluetooth mod. If you had a bluetooth node, you wouldnt need a microphone as you could pair it with a bluetooth Mcrophone/earphones - even with a little software hacking even pair it with an HSDPA mobile phone! (Now I am really dreaming!)
@POPE JOHN PEEPS II:
It does seem a bit pointless for the iPhone, but with the Touch starting at $299 (with no carrier contract) and wireless getting more and more ubiquitous, this could be a very useful no-monthly-plan phone option as soon as there's a voip web app.
Still seems like Apple should have included an internal Mic.
Curiosity, how is the quality of a recording on line in? I googled and got some AMR files I assume they're apple files so I can't use it but thats besides the point. Could it be used to record decent quality line in audio or its mostly used for voice only?
When the hell is February going to get here?!
how much?
The bluetooth idea is sweet.
Or maybe something that jumps on the 700mhz spectrum?

They claim this product is compatible with the touch. Problem is that it operates on the A2DP profile, which is a one-way stream for audio.
Any bluetooth gurus know how tough it would be to change the profile to HFP to allow calls?
@Pope John Peeps II: LOL, i make a lot of international calls and also travel internationally where I have Wireless access. I would love a VOIP client that i could use natively on the iphone through the wireless connection. That would make my iPhone so much more valuable. I would save so much $$$$$$$$$$$ :)
@Keonar: You could always get an N95 8Gb.. Where VOIP works natively;) Its saved me a bloody fortune.
