Sounds like there may be something to this Microsoft Zune HD thing. Updated.

Now, whether that "something" lasts for the long run—especially with a definitive lack of apps–is another thing, but for now Zune HD lovers can head on over to eBay for what amounts to a ludicrous price for a super rare, unreleased color and get their bid in before the auction ends in about two days.

The eBay user conveniently lives in Washington, and said they procured this rare kit from a friend. Now they're selling it for cash and are set to make a small fortune off this Zune HD with a nifty little paint job.

Now, will this model eventually be released en masse to the public at the usual Zune HD price? Sure, it probably will. But, if this wacky series of tubes has taught me anything, it's that there are plenty of people who'd love to win this auction and yell "FIRST!" to the rest of us.

Update: Yeah, this thing is getting all sorts of lame and suspicious. Crazy bidding, sketchy seller—everyone with half a brain proceed with caution. Maybe just watch the insanity take place from afar. [eBay via Anything But iPod via Engadget]

Apart from being colored differently, the NW-S640 (top left) and the NW-S740 (top right) are pretty much identical, though the S640 lacks noise canceling.

The players have an FM radio, usual codec support, and an eye-opening stated battery life of 42 hours for music, and 10 hours for video. They also come with premium MDR-EX300SL earphones, and a matching speaker bundle will be available when they arrive in Japan in October.

The S740 series will be: 8GB (Y16,000; $177), 16GB (Y19,000; $210), and 32GB (Y25,000; $276). The slightly cheaper S640 series is: 8GB (Y14,000; $154), and 16GB (Y17,000; $188). We'll fill you in when we know more about an almost-certain U.S. release. [Sony Insider]

Along with standard codec support, there's also new drag and drop feature that auto-transcodes video from your computer. And in Japan at least, the player comes with premium MDR-EX300SL earphones. Battery life is listed as 29 hours for music, and 9 hours for video.

No word on U.S. availability yet, but if the recent S and E series Walkmans are any gauge, the wait won't be long after it hits Japan on October 31. Pricing there will be: 16GB (Y24,000; $226), 32GB (Y30,000; $332), and (Y40,000; $443).

When I say "trash," I don't mean it's bad; quite the opposite, actually. But at $40/$50/$70 for 2/4/8GB capacities, the Clip+ is very nearly disposable—you can knock it around or drop it and not feel bad—making it an excellent player for workouts or as a spare in case your main PMP runs out of juice on a long trip.

What's New

The Clip+, unlike the Clip, packs a microSD slot for cheap expandable memory (up to 16GB at the moment). The microSD slot also supports SanDisk's own (admittedly stupid) SlotRadio cards. The clip on the back is no longer removable, and the headphone jack has been moved to the right side of the player, away from the miniUSB port. Oh, and the control pad is now square instead of circular. That's pretty much it for new features.

Why It's Great

What makes the Clip+ better than competitors like the iPod Shuffle and Creative Zen Stone is surprisingly excellent sound quality. This little guy has some power behind it, sounding as good as my Zune with a pair of decent earbuds. SanDisk clearly knows what they've got, since the Clip+, unlike other tiny budget mp3 players, supports audiophile codecs like FLAC and OGG.

It's got an FM radio, podcast support, and a voice recorder as well. It also auto-detects OS and will choose either MTP (Windows) or MSC (everything) when plugged in, meaning it supports every OS perfectly. The two-color OLED screen is bright and readable, and the player itself is miniscule and feels very tough—I've actually dropped it twice and there's nary a scratch on it.

Flaws

In terms of controls, it's not ideal—I'd really like to see a dedicated Back button instead of having to hit Menu and then select "Back to Music List," but after two minutes of toying around with the player, you'll have it figured out. The battery life isn't thrilling, rated at 15 hours, and I would have preferred a dedicated hold switch to the Home button playing double duty. Also, scrolling through long lists of artists or songs is a little pokey—it's no problem if you've only got a few GBs of music, but if you have a filled 8GB player with a microSD card, it'll be annoying.

Conclusion

It's the best low-end mp3 player on the market, without question. And did I mention it costs $50 for 4GB? That's $20 less than the iPod shuffle and the Clip+ has the shuffle handily beat on features and sound quality. I recommend the 4GB version—it's worth the $10 upgrade from 2GB, and 8GB is really more music than the little guy is built to handle. The UI's a little dated, but it's totally serviceable, and the player's strengths more than make up for its drawbacks. I've got absolutely no hesitation about recommending the Sansa Clip+ as a workout or spare mp3 player. [SanDisk]

Aside from the slightly larger, ever-more-fingerable TFT screen, the X-Fi 2 supposedly adds improvements to sound quality, which are down to murky machinations inside Creative's X-Fi audio processing system, as well as TV-out, which is particularly useful considering the player's generous video codec support. The rest of the specs are more or less unchanged: There's an FM radio, built-in mic, a microSD expansion slot, and syncable calendar, task list, contacts and RSS reader apps. It actually looks like the player has lost a feature since v1 too, since the prior model's Wi-Fi access is nowhere to be found. Not that it ever did much, but still.

Anyway, price! It's pretty low, considering what you get: It's 230 for the 32GB model, $180 for the 16GB and $130 for the 8GB. The highest price point seems like a dig at the iPod Touch, and it could be a clever one: The two players offer completely different things, and if you want to do more than play music and videos, the iPod is the clear choice. On the other hand, if that's all you want to do, a 32GB touchscreen PMP makes a case, if not a particularly strong one. It's available for preorder now, and should ship within a few weeks. The core concept hasn't changed since it was introduced, so here's a quick refresh: The first tier of the system is a fairly literal update to the CD, in which customers pays around $15 for a DRM-free MP3 album on a microSD card. The second, and potentially more interesting, part of the plan is slotRadio, which upped the SD card content to 1000 songs, the price to $40, and the DRM warning level to "Critical." It didn't win too many fans here (or anywhere), partly because it was a flawed concept, and partly because the player sucked.

And for what it's worth, the Clip+ looks like a better piece of hardware. Alongside the slotMusic/Radio shtick, it's a fairly standard entry-level MP3 player—a direct update to the popular original Clips—with an FM radio, anywhere from 2GB to 8GB of storage, and prices from $40 to $70, and—this is notable, sadly—a way to navigate your music via a one-inch OLED screen. For its benefit, you should probably just think of the Clip+ as another one in the growing pile of commoditized low-end MP3 players, that just happens to support one of the most misguided marketing ploys the music industry has ever seen. We got a few minutes with the Zune HD all the way back at its announcement, and everything felt and looked like something to get excited about, but that was just a taste; now we know that the Zune's relative stagnancy over the last few years hasn't been for nothing. I just hope Bell wasn't swept away in the moment; if these observations hold, the Zune HD could be a certifiable Very Big Deal. I have a 160GB Classic, as I thought I needed it. But with a 32GB iPhone, I end up leaving my iPod at home, even when traveling. I once had a fantasy that I'd sync a ton of video to it, to serve up. That fantasy was never realized, though, because these days it easy to just plug your laptop into a TV. I like having an iPod Touch in the house, however, because when my kid wants to watch videos, I'd rather give her that than my own phone. Besides, some apps like Sonos' controller and Apple's Remote are better suited to a device that lives in the living room. An iPod Touch with a camera makes sense, getting a step closer to the iPhone; it's an equally intuitive device for people who want to keep clear of AT&T.

Put a camera in the Nano, and the opposite occurs: It becomes a mystery object, something unlike all other products in the universe, and not in a good way. It would be something to learn, with even more buried mystery functions than it has right now.

Let's be honest, the Nano is built to play music. Video playback on that tiny screen is a joke, accelerometer or not, and I have never met a soul who actually stores calendars and contacts, or uses any other mini-app or game. Putting still more tech into the Nano is a mistake that companies other than Apple would make—sure, it will be "neat," but it's impractical and a waste of development.

The Classic is a different story, one of diminishing demand. Hard drive players are almost nowhere to be found, and there's discussion of late that the 1.8" hard drive is headed for extinction, because flash memory is finally cheap. I think Apple will still sell a Classic, at least until they can pop out 64GB flash iPod Touches for under $400, but I don't think they'll do anything to modify the current Classic in any meaningful way, and they certainly aren't going to go all the way to 240GB, even though it's possible.

If the Classic is justifiable for music library owners like me, but mostly a non-starter, the Nano's raison d'etre is being a "value" option. It's cheaper than the iPod Touch, which hovers at the $230 only to distance itself from the 16GB Nano, at $200. If Apple dipped that iTouch to $199, they'd sell fewer Nanos than they are selling now.

Screw the camera—what Apple should do is lower the Nano price even more. Samsung and SanDisk sell 8GB players for less than $100 now, and you can even find a few 16GB players in the $130 range. That's $50 to $70 lower than what Apple charges, and nowadays, most of those devices will play anything you buy from iTunes—little or no manipulation required. Meanwhile, almost all PMP development from other companies is geared to building a cheap iTouch replacement, not a Nano clone.

As Apple itself declared during their earnings call, "We expect traditional MP3 players to decline over time as we cannibalize ourselves" with iPhone and iPod Touch. They readily admit that iPod Touches sell like hotcakes while demand for clickwheel iPods has slackened. It's just a puzzle that when these devices should be on life-support, Apple seems to be want to push them further. [iPod/iTunes]

Both are touted as entry level, so the assumption is that these models should be fairly affordable, but there are no specifics on or availability in the States just yet. [Sony Europe and CrunchGear]

For now, the device is only listed on Cowon's Korean site, and there's no official word regarding when, or if, it'll be released in the US, although I'd point to English language marketing materials and, more convincingly, FCC badging as clues that it eventually will. [Pocketables via Engadget]

We don't know too much about the 2.7-inch touchscreened YP-R1, as it's merely leaked onto a British online shop, but it looks like the YP-R1 is set to bring it in the audio department (with AAC, FLAC, and OGG support in addition to MP3 and WMA) as well as video (where it can read Xvid, DivX, H.264, MPEG-4, WMV, and, oddly, Real Media Video). It's got TV-out to display all that goodness on a big screen, though the only capacity we know about is a paltry 8GB, which just doesn't cut it these days. The page shows a release date of July 30th and a price of about $180 USD, which is a little pricey for an 8GB player. Dvice says the digital camera and the MP3 player were the only prototypes on display, which are limited both in function and technical prowess (1.3 megapixel sensor for the cam, 2 gigabytes of storage for the MP3 player). But it's the quirkiness of the stop motion cam that appeals to me. If you ever had a box full of Lego bricks and a video camera growing up, I suspect you've made some stop motion shorts in your time. Now, you can apply that same aesthetic to real world videos.

Lego plans to release the digital camera and MP3 player in the fall for $40 and $50, respectively. Who knows about the rest of the stuff—Lego didn't reveal many details on those. [Dvice]

The player is made by MobiBLU, best known for their tiny cube player a few years back, and while we don't have a price or even capacity yet, it's somehow set to come out this month. We can definitively tell you that the Miffy player will feature interchangeable clothes in various colors, which for a gadget like this is probably just as important as, you know, actual specs. Not that anybody cares about the specs on this kind of thing, but the "Moo-Cow MP3 Player" packs 4GB of storage, an LED indicator light (since there's no screen), and buttons on the cow's ears. It's available at the admittedly very reasonable price of $30 in three colors. It's possible that this gadget has something to do with it being the Year of the Ox in China, but we'd prefer to believe it's just the product of careful trendwatching and some misguided inspiration. Oh what's this awesome thing strapped to my head? I dunno, it's just some thing Speedo sent over to me. Underwater music? Yeah. Yeah it's kind of sweet, isn't it? iRiver makes it, 2GB, costs around $130, and not coming out anywhere but Japan any time soon. Man I love Japan. Hahahahaha. Hahahahahahahaha. I'm just a regular guy, at heart. Just a regular guy.

Indeed, the Aqua Sounder will not only transmit your MP3 player tunes from a dock positioned up to 150 feet away, it will also provide ambiance with two LED mood lights. It's completely submersible, and you just might be tempted to use it for a game of pool dodgeball, but I would have to caution against it. [Grace via I4U via DVICE]

The Q2 will save you a few bucks on the Nano, and will net you a little bit more screen real estate at 2.4 inches, QVGA resolution. Controls are via a touch directional pad below—no touch on the actual screen, or any widgets like the P3. They'll be $100 for 8GB and $130 for 16GB available in April.

The U5 is geared toward exercisers, and its build pretty much like an original iPod shuffle (with an end-cap USB port). A 4-line OLED screen shows you basic info, and you can also track a workout with a built-in timer. It's $40 for 2GB in five colors, with 4GB and 8GB versions forthcoming.

Both feature FM tuners and voice recorders.

U5 Sporty MP3 Player
The Samsung U5 is designed for the active consumer seeking a simple-to-use portable music
device without compromising style. Its lightweight design, user-friendly touchpad and USB
connectivity makes the U5 a perfect companion for consumers always on-the-go and engaged
in sports. The U5 also features an FM tuner / FM recorder, so workouts are less monotonous
with more music options, as well as a voice recorder.

The U5 is available in a multitude of fashionable colors, including black, white, red, pink and
blue.

Naturally, there have been plenty of concerns about this development—and Apple has responded by saying that they will offer an adapter for third party headphones (yet another thing to buy). So, I thought that this would be a good opportunity to ask a point blank question: do you use Apple earbuds?

No, instead the Acorn MP3 Player rose to portable music dominance through its organic design and a hip marketing campaign—quickly becoming the standard, must-have accessory of moms, tweens, and the giant radioactive flying chipmunk ruling class.

On the plus side, the Acorn MP3 Player is only $21, meaning that baby radioactive flying chipmunks never need to decide between listening to music and acquiring a base level of dental care. [gadget4all]

The waterproof Tokyo Flash MP3 Player Home Tower comes with a built-in speaker on the base, and a USB port located underneath the body for you to plug in music-filled Flash drives. Red LEDs display the time on the side as volume and track control buttons can be found on the top of the case. They were even kind enough to trade him a brand shiny new MP3 player for his troubles. And a happy ending was had by all. Chris Ogle, 29 of Whangerei, NZ—your 15 minutes of fame have now concluded. [Reuters]

Hacked Gadgets uncovered this device, which is built from scratch by an Japanese engineer calling himself ChaN. The MP3 player uses a three-axis accelerometer, enabling it to sense tilt, inclination and shock. The device features no buttons, and has a SD card slot, and a small, 2.1w speaker for playback. Plus it has an audio jack to attach a second speaker.

If you turn the player so that the speaker is face down, it turns off; lift the speaker side off the table and it back on. If you tap one of the corners against the table, it will skip forward a track. Tapping the corner on the opposite side will make it skip back a track.

You can also roll it on to its sides horizontally adjacent to the speaker to increase or decrease volume. Obviously, for some of these controls, buttons seem easier, but it's a cool demonstration of what you can do with simple technology and a good idea. [ELM via Hacked Gadgets via Dvice]

Chris Ogle, who hails from the Kiwi town Whangerei, says the device (sadly unspecified) never worked as an MP3 player, and when he plugged it in to diagnose why, said military files were found. Included in the dump are large lists of deployed soldiers with their SSNs, cellphone numbers and health info, as well as lists of equipment deployed to various bases and mission details.

Chris says he will return his new found treasure to the DOD if they so request, and in the mean time, is honing his skills at providing soundbytes in rhymed verse:

"The more I look at it, the more I see and the less I think I should be!" he says.

Unlike most products in this category, the Music Ball was designed with usability in mind. This foamy ball will sit anywhere, dangle or swing during playback, demanding no support beyond your device's headphone jack. The single white wire and range of appealing colors let the Music Ball double as a fashion accessory (though admittedly not the most masculine one), and the powered speaker ensures that you'll actually be able to hear your music. The battery only lasts about two hours, but it's USB-rechargeable.

The only catch is the price: it's kind of expensive even without importing costs, and once it's shipped over from Japan it comes in at just below $80. If that's not too rich for your blood, the Yuen'To ships in February. [Akihabara]

For one, album art now looks like it finally shows up in sizes larger than a postage stamp (half a stamp, actually). Also added is a memo/drawing app for stylus doodling, enhanced video controls, auto-rotating images and the ability to schedule recordings of FM Radio here in the states and DMB radio/TV in Korea.

Well, the actual response was a little less Victorian (as reported by Wired Epicenter):

"Basically, what happened last week, Steve [Ballmer] said a couple of things about the category," said Adam Sohn, head of Microsoft's Zune marketing division, causing speculation that Microsoft would stop making Zunes. However, he clarified, "we're not getting out of the hardware business at all," adding that Microsoft is "deeply committed" to continuing to its Zune hardware strategy.

For what it's worth, this is a direct statement from Microsoft—the crux of last week's Financial Times story was not found in a direct quote, but rather in a section of analysis. Says the FT:

[The future of the Zune] lies in planting the software and online service linked to the player in other devices.

Given that music phones have long since come of age, such a strategy—whereby the Zune is a software platform primarily intended for the multitude of Windows Mobile handsets—would make sense. But for now at least, the standalone Zune seems to have some time left. [Wired Epicenter—Thanks, Joel!]

Both the Ibiza Rhapsody Mini and Ibiza Rhapsody Touch are equipped with Wi-Fi capabilities for content browsing and instant downloading. While they are still working on getting YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter accessibility, the Mini and Touch are already set to go with Rhapsody, Flick, Audible, and Internet radio.

Although both MP3 players will be 3.5x2.0x0.4 inches—and will come in sizes ranging from 8GB-32GB—the Mini has a 2.2-inch color screen with a four way d-pad and supports MP3, AAC and WMA, while the Touch is equipped with a 2.8-inch touch screen, bluetooth connectivity, and is able to play MPEG-4, H.264, VC-1 and DiVX 3/4/5, and stream stereo audio.

Shhh, it's coming out of its lair now to display this yellow brick road of scrolling album covers. Astounding! Resemblance to its similar species, the iPod touch, is clear, especially when the built-in wi-fi is considered in kind. And what's this? A mating dance? We should see the NWX-1000 hitting stores this summer. Stunning! [Anything But iPod]

Despite the branding and look of the devices, which will be accompanied by a secondary line of larger items like boom boxes and alarm clocks, they aren't actually made of bricks, or at least ones that you can disassemble. It's obvious that a digital camera or MP3 player couldn't be completely or sturdily constructed out of Lego bricks, but to sell a Lego toy that can't be disassembled at all is just... out of order.

How about a camera with little detachable lenses? Throw in a brick-mount plastic fisheye and a gimmicky zoom lens and you've got yourself a neat little lomo with a Lego twist. Or what if the MP3 player is componentized, so that the storage unit disconnects for uploading, then seamlessly integrates into the player's body? Anything to make these toys something more than Lego-themed—and therefore at least a little fun—would have been just fine. [KidsTechReview—Thanks, Brian!]

The Good: We've been eyeballing the Asian version of the P3 for a minute, and it looks like a solid successor to the P2, whose sound quality was especially lauded. It looks nice, and features a nice capacitative touch screen that features a variety of haptic feedback that buzzes in kind when scrubbing through tracks, changing the volume, etc. Comes in 8/16/32GB sizes, available in the good ol' first half of 2009. No price yet.

The Rub: With no wi-fi, there isn't a lot of things to widgetize. So you're looking at not much more than basic menu choices, along with a sticky notes, etc.
