We have a well-documented steampunk fetish here at Gizmodo, which is why we totally popped some tents when we saw these amazing steampunk robots by sculptor and animator Stephane Halleux. They're beautiful in their detail, although unfortunately, unlike real robots, these guys don't move. I could see these fetching some pretty high prices as pieces of art, however. Nice work, Stephane. [GadgetLab]

Sorry, I don't really know where to put this comment, so I am just putting it on the top post on gizmodo right now.
Glad to see the staff at gizmodo is continuing to destroy what once was a really nice blog to read. First, you changed the site design to a less appealing, more difficult to read design.
Now, you post gigantic Nissan ads all over the place. Honestly I have more ad on my screen than content right now.
Come on guys, your ads must bring in premium $$. Do you really need ads that are this outradeous on your site?
Steampunk SUCKS please no more! And seriously about the adds... I could argue it both ways, but still we would like to see a consistant page here..
Hmm, while these ARE cool looking, I really have to insist on functionality in my Steampunk.
If not then maybe a slightly different designation?
Like Stampunk-esque?
Still, very cool looking.
Wah wah wah. Who cares if there is a Nissan ad where there used to be just light blue border? As long as it keeps these excellent gadget writers employed, fine by me.
@Wegmans: You want a consistant internet page? As in one that never changes? What for and um...good luck. The consistancy is in the coverage and writing, which hasn't changed (improved if anything.)
On the contrary my friends... Having a site such as this must cost loads of cash to keep up and running. Besides a couple of adds here and there isn't so bad. Unless if you want to spend hours searching through the net finding new gadgets and stuff yourself. Thank Gizmodo for their accomplishments.
And by the way, steampunk IS totally awesome!
I agree, the old design was great. You need to fix this, it looks terrible. I've read this site for a while, back when Joel was here. He was funny and will be missed. Just when the newer writers started hitting their stride, bam, terrible design change.
Bah. You're all punks. As an Official Steampunk Author (I have an embossed membership card around here somewhere) I sneer at the comments above. All clank to Gizmodo!
@strider_mt2k: Agreed. No moving parts = steampunk-esque
@jaylake: Prove it.
@Troust
Well sucks to be you, I'm not alone. And I'm guessing by your lack of interpretive skills that you can't figure out I'm referring to the HUGE Nissan add to the left..
I'm sorry but I read BOTH Engadget and Gizmodo, and Engadget is starting to win me over because they don't cover crap like this!
I realize the value in advertising, which is why I stated that I could argue both ways... Enough said, let's move on.. maybe some more iPhone news?
So what for the ads. Actually, some adult website ads would be nice (ouch! sorry). These boys gotta get money some how in order to support their gadget addiction. It's like crack you know.
As for steampunk, it's cool and all but don't spiders have, like, 8 legs or something?
First, steampunk is rapidly approaching lolcats for annoying overuse. Maybe it's the "hip new thing" but man, it's getting played out. Fast.
Second, they are "ads" as in short for "advertisement" - grammar Nazi or not, christ - learn to spell so you don't look like a moron.
Third, the horizontal banners could be a little less obtrusive, the side banners aren't that horrible. So unless we're all going to start chipping in to maintain the Giz writers in the manner to which they've obviously become accustomed - stfu & deal.
@FubarGuy:
I am in ur comments
dissing ur posts
yeah um the ads arent that bad. The Wamu bankers pen ads on adultswim are fuggin LAME.
About "steam punk"
Cyber punk kinda made sense back in the 70's-80's. Punk was a relevant trend. Cyber punk injected a new cynicism into the scifi genre.
Steam Punk as a genre is neither cynical nor relevant to punk (which itself trickles onward as a subculture somehow).
It is just repackaged 19th century romanticism. You know, those annoying kids in high school that read Shelley/Byron and Poe obsessively?
Steam punk
I suggest you change the "steam geh" or "vintage multimedia".
yeah I agree, as much as I like "some" steampunk in this case they are not gadgets or functional so shouldn't be here.
People: Learn to deal with news that won't be your exact cup of tea. If I have to suffer the news about the stupid Japanese novelty gadgets and PS3 articles then you can damn well suffer some steampunk-esque comments from time to time. You go to a place because in average it contains things you like. As long as Gizmodo has stuff I like (on average) I can deal with the odd article I'm not interested in.
On the ads (one "d", it's not that hard and you do look like a moron when you misspell it): Whoever suffers advertising in webpages nowadays is because they like it. I read the Giz through RSS and use adblock. I understand websites need the ads to cover for costs but I also know I've never clicked nor will I ever click on a banner so I don't feel bad filtering them out.
If you choose not to use RSS and not to block the ads on the page then just filter them out visually and/or ignore them. It's not that hard. We do it all the time in newspapers, magazines and bannered TV Shows.
Calaveras: You're on a losing side there. This was argued already a decade ago and didn't hold. The term "Steampunk" was first used tongue-in-cheek and sadly it stuck (probably because it's easy to remember and sounds cool). The name is completely disconnected from any reference to Cyberpunk and doesn't try to justify itself, it's just what it is. You can't change it because it's not supposed to be logical.
So suggest away, but it will be for naught.
I always though steam punk was a reference to a Japanese anime series with the same name.
First off, this guy's work is amazing. I would love to see something animated by him, in his style.
Second, if you hate the ads so much, use Firefox like a sane person, and adblock the ads. If you still complain about ads in this day an age, you're an idiot.
Great sculptures, moving parts or not. For an ad-free (almost) reading experience, why not use an rss reader like Google Reader. Not so complicated.
@strider_mt2k:
With a bit of a makeover this guy might qualify...
[gizmodo.com]
@ANoel: Functional indeed!
I'm always blown away by the ads here when I use the IE browsers at work.
Thank God for Portable Firefox and Ad Blocker Plus!
Spoils ya.
