The fact that Comcast was caught by the AP blocking BitTorrent last week wasn't much of a surprise (even if it was a disappointment), but more people have done self-tests and discovered they're possibly blocking even more application traffic. The EFF found that not just Gnutella—another file sharing app—was being blocked, but Lotus Notes, an app businesses use to share calendars, emails and files over the net had its traffic interfered with as well. It's fine to piss off a bunch of file sharers, but when Comcast starts making sure that a CTO can't get the files off his work machine, that's a different story altogether. Net Neutrality, we need you! [EFF via Ars Technica]
Comcast Blocking Gnutella and Lotus Notes Traffic?

Which is why I will never switch my services to Comcast.
The turtle always wins the race.
I can't seed to anyone. Comcast sucks.
uh-oh, going after teenagers downloading episodes of SmallVille is one thing, pissing off people who can actually afford to defend themselves legally is a different beast. I predict Lotus Notes will be packet free before they even consider freeing gnutella and bittorrent.
That's funny, when I e-mailed Comcast just the other day about why I can get 50ms and 400kB/s to my VOIP provider over FTP but latency of 800ms over a VOIP session, this was their reply:
We do not block access to any P2P (Peer To Peer) applications, including
BitTorrent. We respect our customers' privacy and don't monitor
specific customer activities on the Internet, or track individual online
behavior, such as which websites are visited. Therefore, we do not know
whether any individual user is visiting BitTorrent or any other site.
Additionally, Comcast does not "throttle" bandwidth (limit throughput on
the network). Comcast also is not traffic shaping or packet shaping.
We have a responsibility to manage our network to ensure that our
customers have the best broadband experience possible. That means we
use the latest technologies to manage our network to provide a quality
experience for all Comcast subscribers. This is standard practice for
network operators around the world. I do not have specific information
to provide to you regarding the details of how we manage our network, or
vendors that may be used.
@SecretAsianMan: you might want to keep a copy of that email, hand it to your lawyer, then go nuts on bittorrent.
Net Neutrality, we do need you, but this is not a net neutrality issue. This is just Comcast once again demonstrating how to be a terrible ISP.
If they were throttling only a particular Bittorrent tracker or certain FTP site but no one else that would be a net neutrality issue.
That explains the problems with some of our remote users and notes not working...
Bad comcast! Don't piss off one of the largest financial institutions in the world!
Comcast has been spoofing Limewire as well though a simple reboot of the client lets you run it no problems.
I think comcast wants to go out of business
And again, I'm glad I have DSL/Satellite and not Cable. =-]
I'm all for blocking Lotus Notes because it's a POS.
So how do we read the Comcast letter in light of the testimony of customers to the contrary? Simple. COMCAST is not throttling any traffic - their vendors (or vendors' network management software ) is! It's kind of the same as when Walmart can claim they do not hire any undocumented workers - they just hire maintenance firms who hire undocumented workers!
Yet more evidence that Comcast is evil.
I swear, if Comcrap ever expands into my area and takes over my Internet service, I'm moving somewhere where there's FiOS.
There is a simple solution, don't use them. It's how a a free enterprise market works. Take your business elsewhere. Once they start loosing thousands of customers to competitors whom offer better service they will be forced to change their ways or go bankrupt.
Remember people you can also vote with your dollars.
You say don't use them, but i don't have a freaking choice! It's this or dialup! Not all of us live in NYC you d-bags
@Zarian:
Unfortunately that's not the case everywhere. The only option (when I initially moved to the city I'm in) for high-speed internet was Comcast. Then, the region was taken over by Time Warner... which is basically the Comcast service/hardware with a new name on the bill.
I know my torrents (of legitimate stuff) are being limited by my net connection.

Read this "How to bypass comcast bittorrent throttling'
Hope it helps.. I tried just now and it seems to have helped, but too early to see
Hmmmmmmmm
I have a remote user that connects via a hardware ipsec tunnel so she can have an office phone at her home in comcast country and it just started to drop last week. All her other traffic is working fine but The hardware site to site tunnel will just drop so her office phone stops working until we bounce the connection..
I wonder......

I have a remote user that connects to my network with a hardware ipsec vpn tunnel so she can have an office ip phone at her house in comcast country.
Last week it started to drop the tunnel randomly and we had to bounce the connection to get it working again, all other traffic is fine from her location...
I wonder if I have been banging my head against the wall for nothing...
DAMN YOU COMCAST!!!
^ See that? That is what it looks like when the comment form screws up and makes you think that you didn't post so you try to retype everything from memory in a furious effort to reclaim all the precious time that you just lost posting the same comment twice...
@Zarian:
Sure, simple enough for some people. Comcast is the only game in town for me. No other cable companies, no DSL, nothing...otherwise, I'd have gotten rid of them months ago. And nothing on the horizon either.
@zarian
It's not like you can just go to another dealership, dipshit. Comcast tends to take over and not let competitors in. It's called a monopoly and the EU just pantsed Microsoft for it.
Comcast is the only service available here in memphis, looks like im stuck with it.
@ comcast customer service
That little old lady had a three-pound hammer. Mine start at thirty.
@swtaznsorjai: You do realize that the number of Comcast customers that either don't care about this or think that they're doing the right thing by messing with "them internet pirates" probably outnumber those of us who care.
Factor in the people who are stuck with Comcast because they're the only broadband provider in their area and it really looks like this change will have very little impact on Comcast's business.
I don't see why its a big news that they're blocking notes.
Who the fuck uses notes anymore anyway?
A CTO... using Notes? Not likely.
@four12:
Um, what do you think they're using at IBM?
I do not use comacast anymore for that reason, even worse they sell unlimited access and then all of the suden they call you to tell you you are abusing the service. No one had the decency to provide the parameters they are using to indicate whether you are an abuser or not. Now they try to sell me phone service which is expensiver than Vonage... Right, here is the idiot who did not learn his lesson!
