Nokia Gets Busted Showing Off N900 SNES Emulator

Alright, Nokia. We know you've ben hurting since N-Gage passed away, but apparently in your despair you forgot that Nintendo wouldn't take kindly to a promo video featuring emulated SNES games. Oops!

The video has since been pulled from Youtube, but the screen grab above shows how Nokia went out of their way to demonstrate how well SNES emulators run on the N900. The rub here isn't the emulator itself; as Nintendo Life points out, Android features a bunch of emulators in its app catalog. As long as those emulators don't come with ROMs, everything is peachy.

The problem was that Nokia actually showed video of Super Mario World and Super Ghouls and Ghosts running within that emulator. They even acknowledged that "some emulators require separate ROM images to play games," and claimed that "[m]ost publishers allow individual title usage provided that the user is in possession of the original title." Yeah... pretty sure Nintendo doesn't like that idea.

So now Nintendo's got its claws out for Nokia. Pretty bold of you to push emulators now that N-Gage is no longer with us, Nokia, but really, you must have seen this coming. [Edge Online via Nintendo Life, Thanks Nintenboy01.]

Let's Count the Ways NES Modders Have Decimated My Fondest Childhood Memories

So a new, potentially very popular Mario title comes out today. Sweet, sweet nostalgia. To celebrate, let's revisit all the 2009 NES hacks and mods that have, thus far, utterly destroyed or otherwise corrupted my most cherished memories, shall we?

Our first mod is a relatively recent one. The modder took a nice, fully functioning Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt combo cartridge, gutted it, and turned it into an admittedly clean and portable NES emulator. Sure, the gutting made most of my 1986 memories fade into a terrifying pit of blackness, but at least this wasn't a golden Legend of Zelda cartridge or anything.

Christ! That's ugly. But pimpin' ain't easy, so we'll give it a break. Unfortunately for me, my psyche receives no such break, and I am reduced to but two hearts, and my Master Sword no longer shoots laser beams.

The greatest platformer ever created by human hands, now a lowly 160GB USB drive. When will the insanity end?

Never, apparently. A mere month before the Super Mario Bros. 3 USB "creation" came to light, someone took a classic Game Boy, removed everything in it that made it a timeless piece of video game lore, and replaced it with a hard drive. Half a heart left, and there's this incessant beeping in my ears. Jack needs food, badly.

When I grip an NES control pad in my hands, its hard edges digging unforgivably into the soft flesh, I go to my happy place. When modder Taylor Merrill does the same, he hears the theme song from Sanford and Son. He also hears friends and relatives because he managed to get a Samsung Eternity phone into the controller that defined a generation of early console gamers. Good for you all. My childhood just ran into a goomba, jumped straight up into the air, and fell off the screen.

DSi Studio Kit Can Start Your Kid On a Path of Photography and Drugs Early

The DSi's camera is probably the lowest-quality camera device you can buy today that can still counts as a camera. But, it's still a camera, and your kids might enjoy making their photos slightly more interesting than the default shots.

Thrustmaster's $20 kit offers variable color filters, a macro lens, a telephoto lens and a wide angle lens. It's great for illustrating the fact that lenses change the way a camera works, since it's not quite something that clicks solidly in your brain until you see it firsthand. But it's only $20, so it's not too much to waste when your kid loses all the pieces.
A lot, apparently. To actually play games on this SNEGENES P portable, you have to jam actual cartridges into the back of the portable.

It's not an issue for collectors, obviously, but in this day and age of cheap emulators it seems a bit excessive. Let's see a lite version.

The DSi shatters and fragments, which is more effective at maiming and disabling a target. On the other hand, the N97 remains whole, for greater penetration through tough surfaces. Both, however, are fun to look at.

Far from an honest ballistics test, the shoot(ing), staged by French gaming magazine Amusement, was just an opportunity to snap a few stunning photos. Which is fine! And which they did!

iPhone 3GS to Be Unofficially Renamed Nintendo iPhone 3GSN64

Zodttd, the developer who brought us GBA4iPhone, has announced plans to release a N64 emulator for the device. But does the 3GS have enough power? Maybe.

The dev says that only the iPhone 3GS and latest iPod touch have the CPU, GPU and OpenGL ES 2.0 support to possibly handle smooth N64 emulation. But the "top-notch" N64 games might not be available "just yet."

Of course, the even bigger hurdle is a reasonable enough control scheme to make the games remotely playable to begin with. I had enough problems with the real N64 controller, so it's tough to imagine the iPhone handling things with any greater success. [All Tech Related via Maxconsole]

I can't blame her. I don't know if it is the mustache or the mushrooms, but I share the feeling. That's why I like this sound-enabled Mario costume.

The costume uses an Arduino system connected to an Adafruit WaveShield. Sensors trigger the sound with different moves. It only needs a soundtrack, but you can always do it with your mouth, which is how I go around in life: Singing the Super Mario theme, dressed on my Mario raccoon suit. It doesn't make any sound, but I can fly with it.
Next Nintendo Handheld May Come with Free 3G Wireless

Nintendo is considering taking a page from the Kindle playbook and offering free 3G wireless web access with its next handheld console (next gen, not yet another DS version), according to company president Satoru Iwata.

The move, if it did happen, would clearly be a response to the surging popularity of iPhone gaming.

"Only people who can pay thousands of yen a month [in mobile phone subscriptions] can be iPhone customers. That doesn't fit Nintendo customers because we make amusement products," Mr Iwata said.

The Kindle's one-off cost would better suit Nintendo's customer base, he said. "In reality, if we did this it would increase the cost of the hardware, and customers would complain about Nintendo putting prices up, but it is one option for the future."

Interesting! Would you pay more up front for free lifetime wireless access on a new handheld from Nintendo?
Why Nintendo Had to Slash the Price of the Wii

It's time for Nintendo to resort to its classic rainbow strategy to sell more Wiis: Its net profit for the past six months fell by 50 percent, almost perfectly matching a near 50 percent drop in Wii sales.

Nintendo sold 5.75 million Wiis over the past six months, versus 10.1 million a year ago. Which is why Nintendo finally got around to cutting the price of the Wii—to move more units, even though that sliced into profits. (Interestingly, it shows Wii sales finally dipped below a million a month, if barely, and just how insanely profitable the Wii is for Nintendo.) If it makes Nintendo feel any better, the Xbox 360 is the only console that's actually seen growth this year, in the US, anyway, thanks to its own price cut.

So, um, next stop: Wiis in multiple colors. Hey, it's worked for Nintendo like a million times before. That, or you know, that Wii HD people are so fond of talking about.
Not to sound phallic, but things keep growing bigger on the DSi. Nintendo confirmed the new 4.2-inch screen DSi LL earlier today, and now Nyko's 8x optical Zoom Case is finally getting pushed out the door.

What we didn't know before was the price...it'll be $25 bucks. But, uh...the DSi only has a 0.3-megapixel camera, so this still just seems silly to me.
Netflix is finally, officially about to hit the PS3, leaving the Wii as the odd console out. Well, besides past hints and the whole "duh" aspect, StreamingMedia swears that the Wii is next, and has seen pitchas to prove it.

Of course, those pictures can't shared in order to protect they're source, and what's more, they're hearing that "Nintendo originally planned to bring the Netflix service to the Wii before the end of this year" but they're "also considering holding off on the Netflix service until they release their next generation Wii HD unit in early 2010." So, uh, just keeping your breath on that one.
Jumbo 4-Inch Nintendo DSi Coming This Year

Oh, of course—it's only been a year since the original launched, and we're talking about Nintendo. Nikkei says a fresh DSi is coming with a 4-inch screen, for the same price as the current one.

So far, the slightly embiggened (plus 0.75 inches) DSi is only destined for Japan later this year, says Nikkei, and it's sorta kinda targeted at geezers who want a slightly bigger screen. Since it's gonna be the same price, we're guessing all of the other specs—like display resolution, even—will be the same. While unconfirmed, since we're talking about Nintendo here, it doesn't slay us with surprise. In this, it's safe to assume the Home Shopping Network did not intend to smash its own TV showing off Wii Tennis.

Hand it to that guy, he does not deviate from the sales pitch after such a colossally embarrassing f—kup, even with his cohost laughing and, no doubt, a production crew trying to keep it together. And hats off to the director who switched over to the b-roll while they got the pitchman positioned perfectly in front of the TV to cover up the scar the Wiimote left.

Now, $329.90 for a standard Wii bundle and a doubled-up set of peripherals? That's a tragedy. Especially since they pretend it'd retail for $379.99.

Next Nintendo DS Might Get a Huge Speed Boost from Tegra

The Nintendo DS is great, but seriously underpowered. That could change in the next version, though, thanks to a little help from the same processor that drives the Zune HD.

It's rumored that Nvidia has won a contract to supply Nintendo with Tegra chips for the next generation DS. The specific chip Nintendo plans on using is unknown, so we don't know exactly how powerful the next model could be. Considering the current DS runs on two incredibly slow processors, any Tegra would be a huge boost in power.

As a bonus, the source reports that the new hardware should allow backwards compatibility. Hopefully not à la PSP Go, where backwards compatibility really means you have to buy all the games you already own again.
Super Rare Sony SNES CD-ROM Controller on eBay Again, Still Looks Uncomfortable

If you're in the market for an extremely rare piece of gaming history, that crazy joint Sony-Nintendo prototype controller has hit eBay once again. It probably costs a boatload, but its owner would be the top nerd on his block.

First, a little history, so you know why we're writing about this upside-down-looking controller that never got released. Before the PlayStation, Sony and Nintendo teamed up to create a CD-ROM add-on to compete with Sega, who was experimenting with their own (destined for failure) add-on. This would have been the controller to that system. Unfortunately for Nintendo (and Sega, really), the partnership broke up and Sony went and created the PlayStation, which promptly conquered the world.

I love seeing this kind of remnant of how things might have been, even though I'm glad Nintendo and Sony didn't release a likely-disastrous Sega CD competitor. The last eBay auction of this controller ended at over $3,000, so the reserve is probably pretty high. Still, this would be a prize item for any game collector. [Thanks, Ben!]

That having been said, the Cyberbike is being developed by European publisher Bigben Interactive and comes bundled with some sort of lame treehugger game that requires you clean up the planet with the power of your eco-calves (don't worry, it also works with Mario Kart). The bike is slated for a January release in Europe, but pricing details have not been announced. Granted, it will most likely be cheaper than purchasing an actual exercise bike, but I can't imagine that some plastic, boxed Wii accessory will be able to handle the beating. Even professional stationary bikes break down on a fairly regular basis. [Kotaku]

Seriously...Someone Is Really About to Release a PS3 Wiimote?

Even with Sony's own motion controller on its way, Blaze will be releasing a "Wii style" remote for the PS3, the Blaze PS3 Motion Freedom 3D Controller.

So will there be 1:1 movement, accelerometers, or IR bars? We don't know. All the product promises in terms of functionality is the full gamut of Dual Shock controls (though note one analog stick is missing), "three dimensional motion sensing" and "super sensitive movement sensors."

But somehow the Blaze PS3mote promises to be compatible with Sega Tennis and Tiger Woods. Without the full support of EA or Sega (which we're doubting they have), it's hard to imagine the controller working very well. But hey, we're happy to be proven right when it comes out at an undisclosed time for an undisclosed price.
Nintendo Wii Balance Boards to Fight Aircraft Terrorism?

And get this: they've modified a Wii Balance board to check for nervous fidgeting/weight-shifting.

Too bad if you've got a sore leg, right? Thankfully, they're still investigating what level of uncomfortable shuffling would be deemed suspicious enough to call for a secondary screening.

The project is called Future Attribute Screening Technology (FAST), and has also developed machines to measure the interval between heartbeats, and how deeply someone inhales.

It's still all research, but one of the researchers told CNN the program is "doing significantly better than chance." I'm all for better security, but it sounds pretty invasive. As Joe Stanley of the ACLU is quoted saying: "Nobody has the right to look at my intimate bodily functions, my breathing, my perspiration rate, my heart rate, from afar."

Unless you're entering the U.S perhaps. Welcome to the possible future of travel. [CNN via Kotaku]

What Would Happen If We Tried to "Play" This NES Emulator Cartridge Casemod?

Finally, an NES cartridge casemod I can get behind without weeping uncontrollably. This one houses a complete library of NES games, uses the original buttons, and hides inside the Super Mario/Duck Hunt combo cartridge. But wait, there's more:

There's also an mp3 player, movie player and an FM radio receiver. The video out is also intact, meaning this little guy can be used to play on the big screen.

Games in action below:

This one is cleaner, boasts more features, and plays Game Boy games too, so it gets the nod today. Nice work.

Oh, and the answer to the headline question, by the way, is unicorns. They would exist. [Ben Heck Forums via technabob]

It looks like a Motorola Q, but communicates over RF to its USB receiver.

Once your signals hit the receiver, you can support Windows, Linux, Mac or Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii (supposedly). Well, that, or your friends will realize that your fascination with a 30-year-old movie franchise is depleting your bank account and adversely affecting your overall grasp on reality, especially when playing Wii.
The victim today is Super Mario Bros. 3, arguably the best platformer title in history and possibly one of the best video games ever created by mankind.

As of this writing, there is one less of these fine cartridges left in the world. The one you see here has had its guts ripped asunder, only to be replaced with a 160GB USB hard drive.

Sure, one could put thousands of Super Mario Bros. 3 ROMs inside this thing now that it contains a hard drive, but the essence—and a bit of my childhood—are gone forever. I'll be sleeping with my copy under the pillow tonight.
Nintendo Wii Price Cut Confirmed? $199 This Sunday

So those rumors that the Wii will drop $50 on Sept. 27 are looking increasingly like a done deal. An internal memo from an anonymous Best Buy tipster backs-up the claim, and says Nintendo will make things official this Friday.

When you think about, it's amazing that the Wii has motored along for three years at $250. But it's clear that Nintendo has to do something. The 120GB PS3 Slim is $300, the 120GB Xbox 360 Elite is $250 with rebates, and 250GB bundles for both are strongly rumored to be around the corner.

My Wii just kind of sits in the corner all lonely these days. If you don't have one, is the new price enough to make you pick one up? Or will you just hold out until 2011 for the next-gen Wii with HD graphics?
As investigators searched the home for drugs, some drug task force members found other ways to occupy their time. Within 20 minutes of entering Difalco's house, some of the investigators found a Wii video bowling game and began bowling frame after frame.

While some detectives hauled out evidence such as flat screen televisions and shotguns, others threw strikes, gutter balls and worked on picking up spares.

Apparently, several members of the team played for around an hour during the raid—high-fiving, pumping fists and generally having a good time. Not surprisingly, some people have deemed this behavior "inappropriate." Maybe so, but the fact that they played the game does not invalidate the search and it doesn't seem to have wasted any taxpayer money. Hell, it's not like they were partaking in the dealer's inventory—these guys deserve a break now and then.
