AXIS 206M Megapixel Network Camera

mp_netcamera.jpg imageAxis Communications will be releasing the "AXIS 206M Megapixel Network Camera" shortly, which, as you could probably tell by the name, is a network camera that supports resolution up to a megapixel. In fact, it's more—1280 x 1024 is closer to 1.3MP. My first question when I saw this announcement was what framerate the camera supports recording at this resolution; I was suprised to learn that it is an impressive 12 frames per second.

This is still quite a ways away from the 30 frames per second required for smooth video, but given the resolution, I'm willing to cut Axis some slack. Once the frame rate comes up, everyone can go out and purchase network cameras to record HDTV video. Though the price of this unit is just above $500, it's still an order of magnitude cheaper than any HDTV camcorders currently available (because there are only 2).
