Floating keychains are common, but this is the first time we have seen something like the Waterbuoy: you chain it to whatever valuable object and, if it falls into the water, the contact will fire up a gas valve that will instantly fill a balloon capable of lifting 2.2 pounds. The water will also activate a high-intensity LED so you can see it at night. Warning note: never store a keychain in your swimming trunks' pocket. Or else. [Besportier]

Awesome idea.
Tie a couple to a survival kit in an orange Pelican case and you've got a real winner there!
Warning note: always store keychain in your friend's swimming trunks' pocket. and laugh.
Hand out personalized versions at check-in for a booze cruise.
Saw this on "dragon's den" (a uk tv show) the other night, the guy who invented it claimed it could be scaled up to rescue sinking ships!
GizWiz presented this product about a year ago. If you haven't heard that episode you really should.
Here we are again, gizmodo reporting on product that have been around for a while. I come here to see what's new not what's old. Do some research for goodnes sakes I've had these for my boat for over a year now.
@mrsmoofy: Funny, I too get annoyed with Giz when they cover something that isn't really new. However, I think to most of us land-lubber geeks, this is cool and new, and I was glad Giz covered it.
yeah...great until you drop it down your sink...BAM...balloon clogging up your pipes...BAM...plumber with no undies charging you too much.
@MrSmoofy: Stop coming here then. It seems to me that if you already had seen this, then you could have quickly moved onto the next article without even reading this. Personally, I hadn't seen it, so I'm glad they showed it. As for the device, it would give a whole new meaning to the phrase "is that a keychain in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?" should you accidentally spill your drink on your pants at a party.
Pretty awesome idea. Might be great for boat keys. However, I gotta wonder if it is a waste of money after an accidental plunge, overspray, or rain. Can you reload it? It also would be nice if they could figure out a way to make it even more compact.
its got to stay wet for 15 seconds i remember
does it go back in to it self after it's been dried off? I'd hate to buy a new one every time i lose my keys. but its' better then printing off new ones..
this can be used as a cellphone strap.
no more need to worry when you drop your phone in the crapper.
... so i need to carry 80 of these to prevent myself from drowning?.....
@pipichua - To prevent yourself from drowning try learning to swim
