This is the Musashi 500, a do-it-yourself mirror telescope made of vinyl chloride pipes, a 21-inch metal pot and some custom-made wood and metal parts. Designed to be easily transported in five different modules, this 5.9-foot long, 44-pound stargazer maybe not be the biggest telescope in the world, but it sure is one of the largest amateur models. I will never understand the Japanese.
Why not find a hobby that has even a remote chance of getting you laid?
@Hvedhrungr: It is my understanding that in Japan, hot chicks prefer nerds. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the fact that its really all they have to choose from. :)
wtf? Is this the next generation of DIY stuff? man, you gotta be pretty crafty at a lot of things to be able to build one of these baby's by yourself.
@Hvedhrungr:
You would think differently if you had ever taken you girl out to look at the stars on a warm summer night.

I'm sure you'd think up something like this too after you've smoked up 21-inches of pot.
Is that some sort of Japanese measurement? What is that, like 2 or 3 pounds?
"made of vinyl chloride pipes"
Uh...I'm pretty sure you mean POLYvinyl chloride pipes (the P in PVC?) I think vinyl chloride is extremely toxic?
Okay, so other than this thing being 3 years old or so there is also no link to how WE can actually build it (sorry, don't speak Japanese.) So what we basically have is an outdated article that just teases us with what we think will be a cool DIY project?
2/10 Gizmodo. Two. Of. Ten.
@MacBandit: True Dat!!
Looks to me like he used the pot as the base for his main mirror holder, you would still need a main reflecting mirror.
I applaud his engenuity but if you were starting from scratch, a truss tube type scope would be much easier to build, store & carry.
