Remote Controlled, Laser-Guided Fruit Flies

headless_robot_fly_1_.jpgYale has taken to turning their fruit flies into personal (and completely ineffectual) insect slaves, controlling their movements by stimulating their brains with laser pulses. If controlling fruit flies by laser-remote wasn't cool or creepy enough for you, Yale's professors took it the extra step, controlling headless fruit flies the same way:

At one point, they removed the heads of several flies and discovered it was still possible to sufficiently stimulate the remaining neurons to induce activity.
Cell has a video of the headless fly in action, so be sure to check that out.
