We have had our eyes on Sarcos for quite a while, as they are the wonder kids that have been promising us super powered exoskeletons. Well, true to their word, they have just released a video of a prototype exoskeleton in action; the result is simply amazing. The device will primarily be made available for military use, allowing soldiers to break through conventional barriers of human endurance. Jump for the video.
The exoskeleton promises to make a difference to many areas of military and civilian life alike. As demonstrated in the video, soldiers will be able to do what they need to for longer. Meaning a soldier's efficiency will be greatly increased. The further applications are yet to be tested, but refined models should be able to assist those with physical disabilities, not to mention the possibility for a commercial edition. I wonder what the price will be? It'll surely be worth every penny, did you see how the arm floated upwards? Awesome. [LiveLeak, Thanks, Elvis. P]

Wow, this would be great for even the simplest tasks around the house.
Wow... that's amazing... until the rise of the robots, of course :P
when it can run through a brick wall and then punch a person's head off, then i'll be impressed.
now I can REALLY impress the girls...
"is that a hi-tech mega-powered exoskeleton you used to pulverize this thug or are you just happy to see me?"
the last part gave me a scare.. "becoming autonomous".. YOU MEAN A TERMINATOR?!??! ahhhhhh
master chief?
i can see the commercials for the civilian version now...
"silly rabbit, ultramobile powered exoskeleton supersuits are for ME"
(decimates everything that moves)
fuck super hero! I'de be a super villain in the suit, walk around town throwing cars, that thing looks amazing.
Note to self: Don't allow people to advance AI in future...
I have to admit I want one, but the giant cables coming out the back seem like they would limit movement. Is there a field version?
word cannot describe the awesomeness of this
now it just needs rocket boots and repulsor rays and it'll be all set.
thats scary cool
So the soldier gets injured and this thing could automatically bring him to the back lines for treatment.
Of course, it could also go ahead and keep fighting with the dead soldiers body still inside... kind of creepy but very cool none the less.
@nospamsam:
thats IS totally creepy..
We have learned nothing from movies!!!! Terminator I,II,III- Matrix Triology, 2001 SO, AI, I-Robot--- A robotic apocalypse is inevitable.
KNIGHT SABRES, GO!
you guys frequent a gadget blog and are robot-phobic?
Put some wings and some jets on one of those. Make a nice mech. ROBOTECH!
ps.I for one welcome out new overlords and can be helpful in rounding up stragglers.
Know what's lame? One of the pics had the soldier holding an ordinary rifle.
Screw that. If you can press 200lbs all day, then carry around something serious. Like four rocket launchers, strapped together.
It's cool and all but I'd rather have a jet pack or a light saber.
This is exactly what I need to take on the Queen Alien that has taken over my garden shed.
I can't see this entering combat roles for at least another decade (if not several), but as is right now, it could be immediately implemented in military support. Average Joe just slapping one of these on and being able to repeatedly lift 100 lbs by himself for more than 10 min would be awesome.
Just don't give it to baggage throwers, those bastards damage enough luggage without the ability to throw it into orbit
Billy Mayes here for the new Skele-turbo! Cleans your floors and picks up your kids from school! Buy it now for only 19.99 and we'll throw in a second on for free!
its pretty cool....but scary as to it capabilities
I'm wondering what kind of weapons will be feasible with the extra strength and mobility. BFG FTW
Winter is comin'! Slap a snow shovel on that puppy & c'mon over! BTW, I live in mid-Minnesnowta. Ah hell, forget the shovel. Just bring it over and we'll use it to push/pull the truck with the plow on it.
Will it blend, though?
Imagine the first battlefield virus....
Full platoons wearing exoskeletons breaking out into the makerana.
I just watched that with the audio turned off and played the Six Million Dollar Man theme music and sound effects in my head.
Do do de do...
na na na na na....
Does this make us the first creature in the history of evolution to boast of both an endoskeleton and exoskeleton?
I am so freakin' proud of my species.
I bet it plays Doom. In real life.
Haha, got to love exoskeletons.
I for one am fond of them (non-robotic kind) cause when I broke my back, was walking three days later. But ya...
If when you leave the exoskeleton it goes and keeps fighting, how are you supposed to get back in it? I don't get that part... The thing runs faster than you, is stronger than you, and is loaded with massive guns, and you are supposed to just get in it?
Sounds cool, though when it goes rampage I think I may be purchasing a few EMP's.
Wouldn't battle damage turn you from superhuman to human carrying three hundred pounds (or however much it weighs) of dead weight? Problem exasterbateded by making the solider a larger target and less trained.
that would be awesome for me that I cant walk
I see something like this being more useful in an industrial workplace over a war zone.
Surprised no one made the obvious Aliens reference -
@rockboy04: That's dumb. Why would soldiers be less trained? And adding a couple of inches onto a soldier isn't going to matter. Not in the slightest.
When they produce these, they will be an astonishingly effective weapon. Think about it. You've got something roughly the size of a person that can run an ENORMOUS weapon into place, set it up, fire it, and then move almost immediately.
super sweet, i would love this for moving semi truck brake drums at work. those things are heavy.
@lunarstreaker:
oh yeah, i could move some snow with that, like the wet heavy crap when the plow comes thru, and with some spikes on the feet, that asshats car who parks in front of my house
Set an enormous weapon up?
Hell ... issue the troop a 20mm assault rifle.
Add armor and some kind of jet propulsion, and you have Heinlein's Mobile Infantry.
resistance is futile
I think I will wait for the one with the Ipod dock in them I'm totally going to get one
how long til it looks like master chief?
Great so now then they take over they won't even have to chase us down, we'll climb into them willingly. I for one think it should come with a metallic mohawk and bling and a voice modulator that mimics Mr. T's voice. "I pity the foo' who messes with ma autonomous robotic exoskeleton". Oh yeah... Then you'd be set for a night on the town.
Stronger than a locomotive: check. Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound: STILL WAITING. Needs more jetpacks.
Sign me up where do I join.
Impressive, but where does an untethered model get its power from? Can they come up with a suitably small power source that provides a reasonable running time?
@scarbrtj: ......A turtle has an exoskeleton (kind of) and an endoskeleton.
that is freaking sweet!
C'mon, no mention of Master Chief? I was almost begging for one of those prototype armor to look like him. Varying levels of protection my ass, all you need is Mark VI!
@LittleJon: Backpack battery pack, according to the video. The field version is apparently untethered.
No one has made an Exo Squad comment yet? I know it wasn't nearly as popular as a lot of mainstream mecha movies and shows but c'mon it's an exoskeleton and the show is called Exo Squad.
I bet that the initial military utilization will not be in front line roles based on the one comment in the clip about "loading 200 lb missles". I could see it being used to load up artillery or ordinance onto planes and stuff.
Now imagine hooking this up with a larger missle/canon type weapon and including some sort of targeting computer, you'd have man portable heavy artillery. It'd be freaking sweet.
Thats crazy. and yea.. that kind of looked like Master Chief.. but preatty cool .
probably one main problem with having someone take it into battle with massive weapons. it can carry them, yes.... but firing them? if you're talking about something like you'd expect to see on a mounted platform or something like that.... or a handheld form of mobile artillery.... you'd also have to devise some way of reducing kick. would suck to be in an exoskeleton holding an artillery cannon.... on your a** half a second after firing it.
I want one of those, but with a self distruct function.
Does it have an iPod dock?? =P
Looks ok, not quite natural movement yet, but very promising technology.
Wow - this is a beefed up version of the exoskeleton Mac wore during the dance contest to try to win their bar back in this season's 'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.'
If you don't k
