The Google Maps Street View Camera

Your friends have undoubtedly been clogging up your in-box with funny pictures from Google Maps Street View, but do you know how those pictures were taken? You do now. Google licensed shots from Immersive Media, a company that specializes in 360-degree videos, in order to fill out their coverage in cities like NYC.

As you can see, IM mounts a 11-camera contraption on top of their vehicle as they drive in order to capture the 360-degree view you get on Google Maps. One thing to note, however, is that Google's San Francisco shots look a lot more detailed than their NYC shots. That's because Google took their own van out to take the SF pics.

  • It's actually the memory eraser from from MIB!

This is all part of Google's plot to -- [F-L-A-S-H]

  • Who am I...what am I doing posting here?

  • me: Hey who are you guys? Look there's a picture of a car with something on the roof

MIB: ah crap, have to redo --[F-L-A-S-H]

I'm pretty sure that they didn't use the Beetle - I saw some picture on the 'net where they caught a reflection of the van they were using in some store window. Actually, there's probably thousands of reflections photos out there.

  • That camera is friggin sick. Does it conenct with a GPS to log locations?

"And now Your Highness. Where is the Rebel base?"

    wowowowow

  • @weatherman. the van was Googles own creation, and apparently was only used in San Fransisco per the text in the original posting.

  • Why don't you stick a link on every fucking word and point it back to your site? I mean it's pretty much getting there...

Took me some time to get used to, but I now never ever click on any links in the body post any more.

    @Lems:

No, never click on post links here.

    Shennanigans!

  • Go easy on them guys. They aren't setting the tags or links. How could they be? Who in his right mind would see the need for an IT'S A FORD MONDEO tag... or a DOMO ARIGATO, PASS THE SASHIMI TAG? There's no way an actuall person could be doing this.

So it's a misguided automated thing?

    Dunno about that.

  • Easy Lemz, at least they're not those obnoxious ad links. Damn, I hate those things.

  • I don't think this is it, friends, & I do virtual tours.

    1) The field of view this 11 sided one creates is a whole sphere, minus the nadir (bottom). The images are donuts, ie, no top or bottom, but rather a cylinder. While the stitched image this 11 eye Argus makes could be reduced to a narrower cylinder, why overshoot? (I know, maybe use the whole thing later . . .); but-

    2) The stitching that the images would produce, due to the lens placement, makes a bottomless dodecahedron. (Take another look.)

I have found simple vertical seams in some of the panoramas going all the way from top to bottom which suggest a single row of cameras going around, not this thing. (You know, like when you take your Canon pocket cam and use stitch assist to make a pano: side by side.)

I bet they didn't start out with the 11 eyed Argus. They may be using it now.

Consider the ultimate source: the PR guy's blog!

  • No Strider, I'm sure these guys are doing it... though it 's probably built into the toolset they are using. The header to the post automatically becomes a tag... a useless one off tag that only links to that one article, unless it's balls of course...

  • Actually, Breasts works better: http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/breasts/

    Wonder if my wife's online...

  • Or Rasin Bread / Jasons girlfriend: http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/raisin-bread/

  • I enjoy a good link to raisin bread (excellent spelling, by the by).

If you don't like the links, don't click 'em. If you can't stand the sight (or site, hohoho) of the links, then get a shrink. You have anger issues.

  • Ahh, butt yule note eye nevar miss spel boobs…

I have Raisin bread issues. :(

  • I had a similar idea a couple of years ago except for a racing sim where you could drive around your own streets then race on them. i Copywrite that too....so if you're intersted in doin that come get me =)

  • they should blur out license plates..

  • in ways i wont explain, it can actually help car thieves..

  • They just modified a fiber optic donkey anal probe.

  • No honey, I've never visited that brothel - why would I? I have all I need in you.

Whaddya mean you have photographic evidence?

    Erm...

  • So are they going to drive around on EVERY road to get the street view? It is probably stated somewhere what their plans are, but I am lazy. BUT I imagine they won't (drive around everywhere). In that case, I'd volunteer to put one of theose cameras on my car and drive around my town for a few days. How else to get the street view of the whole US (OR WORLD!!!!)? Maybe those micro uav bots with cameras?

  • hands down the best way to find out where the hottest prostitutes hang out THANKS GOOGLE!!

  • (my first double comment on a story....Hurah!)

I've been hearing a lot of people bitching that this is too close to big brother and the like. That these images could be used for something more than what google has intended. Granted the bluring of license plates sounds like an ok idea but even that sounds a little paranoid. What, you think someone is going to track you down?

Alanin4D said "in ways i wont explain, it can actually help car thieves.."

I'm not sure how valid this is. The google car will more than likely only drive down a street once. Any cars parked on the street aren't going to be there again....it's not like these images are constantly updated. However, put this system in a residential area and cars become ripe for the pickin. (though not much more than they already are)

I saw on the news a guy (the didn't show the image) was photographed walking into a porn store. SO WHAT?!? like it really matters to him? I'm sure he'd be more worried about ACTUALLY being seen walking in than in some blurry photo that no one he knows has much of a chance of finding. On top of that google has stated that if anyone has an issue with an image they'll remove it.

I applaud google for what they're doing. nuff said.

  • @VINCE77: Yes, she is.
