AT&T Employees Get 10% Discount Off the iPhone

[UPDATE: Get your own Darth Vader iPhone wallpaper after the jump] AT&T may be burning money and forests with their 300-page bills, but boy can they be generous when they want to: according to a reader whose wife works at the Death Star, employees are now getting a whole ten (TEN!) per cent discount on their iPhones! (And yes, I just wanted to get Vader with an iPhone. Sue me if you want. But first get the wallpaper after the jump.)

Love the pic! I find myself creating stories around pics I just HAVE to publish :) So is that 10% off the iPhone or 10% off their bills.

DOn't they get discounted phone bills at a much higher rate than 10%?

Thanks I need to go track down our last receptionist over @ [www.askTheAdmin.com] she moved on to AT&T... Maybe she wants to hook an Admin up! Does it work for friends and family as well or just the damn employee??

  • I used to work at apple and Apple employees get a 25% discount off the iPhone

  • I dont see the big deal in this. Should ATT employess get the same discounts as Apple employees? As I understood it ATT does not make much on the actual phone sales, they make money off the 2 year contract. So if HTC gives thier employees a free phone or %50 discount all HTC retailers should do the same? Its really a non-issue. Personally I'd be gratefull to get %10 off, opposed to the %0 the public gets. $60 off is a pretty good deal.

  • To make it even better, they don't get the discount until mid-Oct.

  • If it makes you feel any betterm I asked ATT if they offered my Air Force discount on the iPhone and they said they did. That is a 39% discount. I am going to get one soon.

  • The funniest part of the Vader image is bitching about the reception. I switched to AT&T for an iPhone and even though I live and work in a major city my coverage is atrocious.

I knew my Apple-hater pals would be giving me a lot of crap about my overpriced toy, but it's hard to fight back when my calls keep getting dropped...

Ok, I just had to get that off my chest. Thanks.

  • Didn't Apple employees get a iPhone for free????

  • AT&T employees will get 10% off in October, zero discount on the monthly fees. My wife is an employee there.

  • Mmm... Maybe I'm lucky or something, but I've been with ATT since before they became Cingular and ATT again. I've had 11 different phones, iPhone being the latest. Service has been great, and no dropped calls in at least the last 18 months. I do mean not one, I'd remember otherwise. Weird? Maybe, but true at least in my case. I will bitch about my iPhone not being loud enough, though. At this price you'd think you could actually hear the other person with the volume on max. How's the speakerphone you ask? What? Wait, what? I can't hear you! You there? Maybe that's why people think they're getting dropped calls on the iPhone -- they just can't hear a damn thing. For reference, I'm in Manhattan and typically roam the general NYC metro area, usually within 30 miles. I've yet to take the iPhone on a long trip, so I can't speak to that.

  • I get 20% off of the iPhone if I wanted to!

    And I don't work for AT&T

  • I know we love making AT&T the villain (and these photos are great), but let's be a little realistic.

    Comparison:
    1. Apple employee with a free iPhone paying full price for AT&T service for two years.

    2. AT&T employee paying 90% for iPhone and getting employee discount on service for two years.

I think you may discover that the Apple employee with their 'free' iPhone is paying more to use their shiny new device over a couple years than an AT&T employee.

Just a guess. I do not know the discount rates. For all I know, Steve Jobs is paying for his employee's mobile phone service, too. But, I doubt it.

  • I like ATT (Get it? The service and the Star Wars vehicle/walker?)

  • [Sorry, lame joke]

  • @Monty: I'm a current AT&T employee, the 10% discount doesn't go into effect till mid october and we forfeit our rate discount if we own an iPhone. Maybe it's due to Apple getting a cut of the monthly has something to do with that. So we at AT&T are very envious of Apple employees. I really would like my rate discount back, it was somewhere around 15%. So sad.

  • AT&T employees don't just get a discount on service, they get free service for up to two phones, so don't feel too bad!

Normally, they do get a 30% discount on all phones, though.

  • I talked to my buddy who is an AT&T Employee the other day. I asked why he didn't have an iPhone yet and he told me that if he got the iPhone he would have to pay for his monthly service. Currently he has a pearl and free service that he's going to stick with.

  • ATT employees get either 19% or 20% off monthly service and 60% percent off "MSRP" of equipment.

However, MSRP of my latest phone, the 8525 or HTC Hermes was like $1200. Which makes it like $480. Great deal, huh?

  • little heads up jesus... it's not "ten per cent" it's "ten percent"... :P

  • My fanboy son stood in line to get his iphone: the darn thing does not work in his apartment. He has to go sit in the parking lot to use it at home. I have to admit that I love that phone and I'll get one as soon as my current plan is up. It worked great during a trip across the USA: even in the middle of the desert the access to the net and the reception was good.

  • @oat: okay i don't know who your talking to, i'm a call center employee of att and i only get 30% off of retail price of the phone, and all apple employees got free iphones on the 25th of july. also if i were to buy an iphone its a 10% discount with a 2 year contract. but if someone in this company is getting better discounts,it would be great to let the rest of the employees know how to get them.

  • the 2 lines of service that the employees get, believe doesn't come free. one line is for 1000 min the 2nd is for 500 min, the employees pay taxes and fees on each line, if you get mobile to mobile, or 5000 nights and weekends you pay 9.99 for each, insurance is extra and so is any feature over 200 messages or 5mb of internet, 4.99 for insurance, and average bill with any extras is anywhere from $65-$85. so where do you come in with its free service. if you go over your minutes its .35 per minute.

  • AT&T employees cannot use the iPhone with one of their employee plans, so they just get 10% off, and have to pay the same price for the service as everyone else does.

Every other phone they can use with the employee plans, which are free for 1000 and 500 minutes except for taxes, and phones are 30% MSRP.

Little heads up Rapo, you are wrong.

It could be ten percent or ten per cent. Both are acceptable. Per cent is more common in Britain, and percent is more common in the US. Consult your OAD the next time.

  • Consult your OAD the next time.

his what? what if he only has an OED? could he check that next time instead?

  • att employee here.

1> NO ONE gets discounts on the Iphone in store, even military. Currently the Iphone isnt available to business acounts, so all discounts from business association (including military) does not apply.

2> We are NOt allowed to use the IPhone on our ERP employee rate plan accounts so no free line use.

Because of 1 and 2, if any ATT employee wants the iphone, we pay the same price for the phone as you do.

  • As always, thanks for the iphone wall papers. Keep em coming:)

I feel sorry for At&T employees. Really sad. Apple giving away free iphones to employees, and at&t employees have got to pay full price. I mean, come on! at&t is a multi-billion dollar company just like apple and it can affoard to spend 12 million to make their employees happy--but no, they won't. Really sucks.

To all at&t employees: May the Force be with you!

  • As I understand it, Apple employees are still eligible for discounts on AT&T rate plans. I'm just saying... And yes, standard Apple employee discounts for Apple products apply, as well.

  • AT&t employees saying you can't use this phone on the lines... if you're a sales rep with at&t mobility you can now activate iPhones on your COU lines. Check the COU login page.

I'm still waiting till the 3G iPhones comes out.

  • I work at ATT, and we normally get a 50% discount on phones and accessories, and 20% off of our monthly bill. With the Iphone we only get the 10% off the hardware, and we cannot get ANY discount on our monthly rate plan. If you activate the Iphone on your employee rate plan, all the phones on that account go back to normal rate.

  • AT&T employees can just call in to say that sold their iphone and now have a Ex. razr cell phone. Just get the data plan and you'll have the discount again...

  • @drewheyman:

I sure would like to know how to get this plan. I currently receive 19% off my monthly bill, and I work for ATT landlines network services.

  • 10% is a nice discount, but it isn't that big of a deal, especially with the wait. For those comparing this discount to Apple giving away phones, don't. Apple employs only a small fraction of the number of employees that AT&T does. Not only that, Apple makes the phone, AT&T doesn't. AT&T giving phones to their employees would be a huge $$$ loss for Apple.

  • FYI, you can now get your hands on an iPhone for $374 including shipping from their clearance outlet store + AT&T new contract/referral rebate (which is a given since you can qualify and find a fulfillment partner customer easily).

    Details: [www.essistme.com]

  • Love the pic of darth vader with the iPhone! It's funny to think about AT&T employees having to use their new toys same crappy network the rest of do.

I wonder if this will help push an EDGE speed upgrade along faster..

  • As and AT&T Mobility employee, you get one Corporate Official Use phone line that is 100% free. Up until recently the Iphone was not available for a COU line. Now it is. As far as other discounts, 60% off MSRP of any phone in the store which is roughly the same as a 2 year contract discount. There is also a 20% accessories discount. Coming in Mid-October a 10% discount on the phone itself is available but if you are not using it as your COU you can not use it as an Employee Rate Plan line it will be charged at normal rates. For any other phone you can choose to have a 1000 or 500 minute plan and only pay for data services and taxes as well as overages. As far as other employees that do not work in a Cellular retail store, they are working to offer cell phone discounts as well as vice versa for Mobility employees looking to get a discount on home services. Currently there is no discount for DSL, Phone Service, or TV. For the average Joe, there are no discounts whatsoever for anyone on the iPhone unless you work for Apple. Full charge for the phone and full charge for service.

  • I just started working for AT&T at their Business Customer Care Center. Our benefit packet says we get 2 phones, and 2 phone lines, shared 1000 minute plan, data services, and SMS text messaging, paid. So I don't know if they just don't give the same thing to everyone or what, but currently, that's what they are giving new employees, and I was just hired on Christmas Eve.
