First he developed Brain Age, a hit Nintendo DS game that helps keep people's brains fit well into their golden years. Now, the same guy, Ryuta Kawashima, is working with Toyota to make cars that help the older folks who perhaps didn't do all the mental calisthenics they should have.
The car systems, which will are now going into development, will be able to determine whether or not the driver was doing anything dangerous or erratic, and control for that or even act to prevent that kind of behavior.
There might be a system that uses both climate control and navigation to make sure the drivers stay alert, for instance. The system might automatically slows the car down if it senses an irrational punch of the gas pedal. There's no mention of the opposite, however. You know, the system that speeds the hell up when it determines that you've just merged onto a 75mph freeway and you're only doing 34. [SMH]

Aww man I'm so torn on this.
My mother is in her 70's and on oxygen and has recently decided to stop driving.
It pains me (and her I'm sure) but I respect the fact that she realizes that her reflexes aren't up to the task of operating a potentially dangerous piece of machinery.
I know people have to get around to live, and that our country is really into the car and the freedom it gives. It's ingrained into us.
I also know that the number of incidents involving our elders losing control of automobiles is going up considerably, and will continue to do so if SOMETHING isn't done about it.
Machines are cool if it can be done, but I think also that they keys have to be relinquished at some point.
If so, some sort of system needs to be in place to help folks get stuff done too. Not everyone has a loving family to help them out.
The process has to be one that respects people's dignity, and yet still really acts towards the common good.
I think driving test should be given again after a certain age. If you don't pass after 3 times, then maybe Medicare can cover the cost of something like ElderTaxi or something. I know it would put a strain on Medicare, but it would also save us on insurance. My wife's grandfather is a stubborn old coot who shouldn't be driving. We tell him, but unless someone takes away his license, he will keep driving... oh, and he is almost blind.
they really need to develop those suction tubes that you use at the drive-thru teller at banks, but for old people instead. no seniors on the road, and they get a hell of a ride in the process. but that's just me
@discounteggroll: wow...that is the worst thing i have ever heard...
I read this just today of a 100 yr old in Japan who wont give up driving as he says it keeps him sharp, regardless of the fact he has been ordered NOT to drive and narrowly missed hitting a child. [uk.news.yahoo.com]
I think some kind of test needs to be administered to everyone for license renewal, not just the elders. There is a vision test given now, but reaction time neeeds to be checked as well.
There needs to be a mental acuity and physical dexterity test for seniors to get their license
and retest every year
i vote for the Logan's Run method...
It's Official …. Toyota IS the new Buick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
First of all, brain age is about the most annoying thing i've interacted with in a LONG time. God how i hate that low-res floating head. I think max headroom should just kill that guy.
