Tent Leeches Solar Power While Campers Leech Your Wi-Fi

Even if this tent were just a tent, it's fashionable enough to seriously covet. But because it's a concept with ubertech, the tent produces enough electricity to power a small town and connects to the internet wirelessly. More »

Orange iGPS360 Brings GPS to Old iPhones

Are you stubbornly holding on to your first gen iPhone, using its energy efficient Wi-Fi triangulation to find your way? Foolishness! The iGPS360 is a $75 dongle that brings full GPS to your jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch. Available for preorder now, there are 1000 units up for grabs and we bet they'd be a ton of fun for various homebrew applications. For some reason the iGPS shop link is currently down, but check Orange's site later if you're interested. Oh, and you can find the iControlPad on there, too. [Orange via iPhone GPS]

Orange Pulls BlackBerry Bold Over Quality Concerns

According to a leaked memo obtained by Mobile Tech Addicts, UK based cellphone carrier Orange have pulled the BlackBerry Bold off of their shelves temporarily citing quality issues with the device. What specific issues they are referring to are unknown, but Orange claims they are awaiting solutions from RIM and plan to have the device back on shelves in "a couple of weeks." As you probably already know, the US debut of the Bold has been pushed back repeatedly—perhaps these issues have something to do with the delay over here as well. Actors Paid To Stand in iPhone Line by Orange in Poland

A spokesman for Orange in Poland unabashedly proclaimed that they "have these fake queues at front of 20 stores around the country to drum up interest in the iPhone." An interesting technique to be sure, we're just wondering if these actors will give up their places when it comes time to actually buy the phone, or if they're going to actually go through and get an iPhone (maybe give them out for free after?). It's not something we would have done, and it would have probably worked had the spokespeople not acknowledged it so openly. "Why yes, that is a sock in my pants. Why do you ask? "[Reuters]

Dance Charge Prototype Powers Phones By Your Furious Robot Moves

Orange, a cellphone provider in the UK, has just developed a couple prototypes of this Dance Charge cellphone charger. You wrap this thing around your arm while you're dancing and your kinetic energy will translate into electricity to power your phone. It's like those flashlights that you have to shake before use, but much, much nerdier. Combine this with the fictional breast charger and you'll be able to power the entire DJ booth with just your flailing limbs. How they got that one chubby doctor from Grey's Anatomy to pose for promo pics is anyone's guess. [Reg Hardware via Tech Digest]

    iPhone Keeps Invading the World

Orange, which already has the iPhone in France, has issued a press release announcing it'll also be on sale in Austria, Belgium, the Dominican Republic, Egypt, Jordan, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Switzerland and its African markets, sometime "later this year." Swisscom has also announced they'll be selling the iPhone in Switzerland. [Orange and Pocket-Lint]

HTC Launches the Diamond—Small and Very iPhone-esque

So, this is the Touch Diamond. It's small, slim, "a holistic experience," according to Horace Luke, HTC's Chief Innovations Officer, and "just like your life." Out in Europe and Asia next month, we should get our hands on it later on this year, and it's the closest thing so far to an iPhone that hasn't come out of Cupertino. Not surprising, since Luke and his team wanted the design to be worthy of MoMA. I'm just not sure about the diamond design on the back. Here is a gallery, the specs and some of the choice quotes from the presentation: More »

Orange Shows Off Gesture Based Interaction Screen, Touch Screens Look On in Horror

Orange has unveiled a gesture based interaction screen that has been produced by a UK agency on their behalf. The agency, known as The Alternative, said it was the first time such a display had been on show to the general public. The purpose of the technology is mainly as an advertising opportunity for Orange, but selecting your favorite music clips have never been so fun. Check out the clip to see what all the fuss is about. iPhone Prices Compared in Four Countries (Verdict: We're Doing Alright)

setteB.IT took it upon themselves to chart up the four different iPhone providers in four different countries and see who's getting the best deal. Apparently, it's Orange (France) if you're looking at the cheapest overall price, but their plan only includes about 240 minutes and limits both Wi-Fi and EDGE data. In comparison, AT&T's got the most full-featured plan at unlimited Wi-Fi, EDGE, and 450 minutes of talk time—some good news in a time when our dollar's crumbling faster than an osteoporotic old man who got hit in the knee. Iqua Sun, World's First Solar-Powered Bluetooth Headset

While Bluetooth headsets are a dime a dozen, ones powered by the sun like Nuclear Man from Superman IV aren't. Orange claims that its Iqua Sun is "the worlds first" [sic, italics theirs] solar-powered Bluetooth headset. Fancy! The green half-ouncer gets 200 hours of life on standby and nine hours of talk time in darkness, like in an elevator on the moon. It'll run you £49.99, which is about 105 American clams. Rumor Smashed: French iPhone's Unlock Status Still Unknown

Although many sites are reporting that the iPhone is coming unlocked in France, quoting an INH article, Apple told us that the piece was based solely off of reading French Law, not from statements by Orange or Apple. The particulars of pricing plans and whether the iPhone will or won't be unlocked is still up in the air, so don't start pulling out your credit cards for a French iPhone just yet. However, because there is such a law that "forbids bundling the sale of a mobile phone and a mobile operator", there still may be hope for an unlocked iPhone. [IHT]

    The French iPhone Comes Unlocked

We told you yesterday that Orange would be the exclusive iPhone provider in France, but that's only half the story. The other half is that since French law prohibits the exclusive sale of phones locked to a provider, Orange will be selling both a locked and an unlocked version of the iPhone as a compromise. The unlocked version doesn't have a finalized price at this time, but we do know it will be more expensive than the €399 bundled version. More »

Orange Zune Hits Shelves After Pink?

Along with the pink Zune, Jason Reindorp, the Zune's marketing director, confirms that there will also be another new color of Microsoft's music player hitting shelves. Our money is firmly on orange, since pink and orange were the two limited-edition runs for people on the Zune team, not to mention the secret limited edition run in stores. Rumor: Google Phone - Why We're Not Impressed

Rumor has it that Google, Orange (the UK cellphone provider), and HTC (our favorite Windows Mobile cellphone maker) are in talks to make a new Google-branded phone. French Jukebox Lets You Text in Your Song Requests

If this isn't a sign that we're getting way too lazy, then I don't know what is. European phone carrier Orange France has teamed up with YCD Multimedia to create the SMS Jukebox. After making its debut at the Cannes Film Festival, the jukebox is being rolled out in bars, cafes, and restaurants throughout France. Customers find a music "menu" on their table and after selecting the song(s) they want, text in the code. As much as I text (and believe me, I text a lot) I prefer the old fashioned way of walking up to the jukebox and manually selecting the songs I wanna hear. More »

Orange SPV M3100 Smartphone: Spiffy Connected PDA

Now here's a smartphone that's getting even smarter, in fact, the Orange SPV M3100 does so much stuff the company's calling it a connected PDA. Running Windows Mobile 5.0, Orange says the phone is the first to support HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access), an offshoot of the 3G wireless protocol that's the latest attempt to bring you wireless broadband-like downlink speeds. It's still able to communicate with conventional networks, too, such as 3G, WiFi, GPRS, and EDGE. More »
