We've been keeping an eye on Dell's discontinued CableCARD systems since they first introduced them on the XPS 410s because they were a relatively cheap way to get HD recording on a reasonably-priced desktop. Well, fantastic news! Chris Lanier says that Dell's reintroduced the CableCARD option on their XPS 420s, which you can customize and get out the door starting at about a thousand bucks. According to Dell, this is a "functional upgrade to the platform", which means you'll be able to get the CableCARD on this line for the foreseeable future. Sounds like a cheap alternative to our set-top-box wishlist item. [Dell via Chris Lanier]

Sorry to go semi offtopic but.. Are the 420s a good value. I a new multimedia/gaming computer via online retailer that allows me to pay monthly like Dell. Building my own, nah don't feel like it.
Way to present a cohesive marketing strategy, Michael Dell! I have no idea what problem XPS solves in my life, which is just as well because I don't feel like giving you any of my money.
haha Dell 420.
The 420 is probably really slow, has overimaginative anti-spyware software, and consumes a lot of electricity. Maybe they're bringing back the Dell Dude. [www.cnn.com]
The specs actually are reasonable for the line staring @ 1K.
Quad-core 6800's w/ 3GB RAM standard across the line, and the decent for hd/video ATI HD 2400.
@Jayson J. Phillips: I know it blows my current machine out of the water.
I'm just glad mine runs ET:QW decently.
