Deep down, most of us know that we suck. But a new video card ranking compiled by J3r3my on overclock.net can quantify our waste of space based upon one's video card.
My first purchase was a 121 and our own Jason Chen is still a lousy 86 (we knew it all along). But what number are you?
Hit the jump for his copy and pasted list (because it looks like the link has gone down).

Every Video Card Ranked [digg]
VGA Charts (for everything not on the list) [toms hardware]

Comments
Does once having the last on the list count for something?
I thought that my card was quite good - its virtually at the bottom of that list! (2nd last) Still works fine though.
ahhh lucky number 13...
I'm looking at the list at toms hardware, not the one above.
If I wanted to upgrade from an ATI XT600 256MB, what should I be looking at?
#25 here... Not too shabby...
The first one I ever had was a Rage128... Ah, memories.
Is this list supposed to be complete? Because I am not seeing my desktop video card, the Nvidia GeForce 6400. I do realize that the list is not going to use the card's full name, but i do not see any abbreviations such as 6400 either. Am I just being blind or is the list incomplete? Or does my card suck so much it did not even make it on the list?
31st....back of the net!
Is this list supposed to be a complete one? Because i am not seeing my desktop video card the NVidia GeForce 6400. I realize that the list probably would not use the cards full name and instead say something along the lines of '6400'. Am I blind or did the creator of this list forgot to rank a card?
My own trend is interesting...
1998
129) Voodoo2 ($250.00) played Quake 2 and 3
2001
113) GeForce2 GTS ($350.00) played Half Life and NFS 3: Hot Pursuit
2003
82) 9600 ($200) played Homeworld 2
2005
42) 6800 ($350.00) played Half Life 2 and all other games to date.
I'm looking upgrade to late this year. The game this time looks like it's going to be Supreme Commander. Since I'm finally graduating from AGP to PCIX, it means a new mobo for sure. I want to see how AMD's upcoming quad cores perform before I commit. Then of course I'll have to wait until they come within a reasonable price!
I guess the last link covers it, but there are still some of us who remember a time BEFORE 3d video cards. So it isn't really EVERY video card just the 3d cards.
I take it back. The Tom's link is just a more detailed list of recent cards.
Oh well. Just the 3d cards then, my first video card (VGA not 3d) must be +150ish.
Heck yeah, number 25.
im number 100, but it really isnt my fault...........it is a mac mini i got for christmas 2 years ago...........not exactly customizable
number 2 here. my FIRST video card though..... probably number 84... the Ti4200. Still have it too.... although it's dead.
Number 39, but mine was damn cheap... about $140... but its 512 mb and it plays Halo with ease.
hey where's my Intel 945 express?
i get 110 fps with minesweeper.
Hmm...I don't where to find mine. 256MB ATI MOBILITY RADEON X1400.
103. lame. i wanna buy #1. where can i find? tried froogle, no luck.
Sweet, #7.
119, then 82, then 31, now 15.
what about the laptop cards? I have a 9600 Pro Turbo. is this the same as a 9600 Pro?
49 really? I didn't realize i was that far back, looks like its time for an upgrade...
I went from 125 to 106 to 49 to 47 to 91 (laptop)
Every video card? Hardly... Where's the Hercules Monochrome card?
Has there actually been a "real" benchie on the 2800txt yet? I wouldn't qualify that as #1 just yet, as according to Tom's, it got pushed back until May. Damn, 56th...definitely time for an upgrade.
Yah, i agree with LeOnidas -- what's the point of listing something that hasn't been released? How can the lister know a) that it's better than the 8800, or b) that nVidia won't come out with an even better card (8900? GX2?) at about the same time?
PS: I'm at number 103...bought around January '04 for around $60. It's technically my first and only video card...but I'm not a gamer, just use it to watch HDTV.
I think lists like this are really useful -- since I'll always be buying low-end cards, it's nice to see how each new-generation low-end improves and compares to previous-generation mid-range. Of course, if there was a link to associated bench marks, as well as some info about 2D video performance (my next goal will be a video card capable of decoding 1080p H.264) that'd make me happy.
On a related issue, I quite liked taking part in the Steam surveys when I was playing HL2. It was a good way to see where my hardware fit into the distribution of other players. I was usually about the middle with the Nvidia 6600. (63 on the list)
And am with el_gordo on the upgrade path. WIll relegate my current setup into my new mythtv box, and that hardware will become a NAS.
I'm ranked #3 :D Got the card yesterday....Why is the X2800XTX Listed as number one? Its not out yet....Might as well list the Nvidia 8900GTX and the 8950GX2....
My fiencee is a #7...i think i'm an 18
I wish I could be higher but I think #39 is as far as this AGP machine is going. Nothing super duper.
I did get the 512MB version though.
Upgraded it from a #103 with 128MB.
huh. my old one-108, my new one-101... too bad i dont have more money to blow on graphics cards...
I have 2 computers with #24, one with pci-e and one agp. Guess i'm still cool.
#8 yay
#25 as well.
I had a #46 and it just broke down...now i have a #43...for u$s140, not bad
how'd they manage to rank a card that hasn't been made yet?
you know what should be #1? ATI Radeon X9950XTX. i'm sure that card will blow the x2800xtx out of the water.
Why didn't he be specific about what brands, different card makes make cards that can end up performing very differently than a card from another brand using the same chip.
yay 49 not to bad for a 3 year old card
This is missing a huge number of cards. They seem to be just from two companies too... How about my old $1400 Radius ThunderPower 30/1920?
i was a 132, then a 128, then a 77 and now i'm a 31, now i have to go buy a $600 card just to feel worthwhile, thanks guys
number 57 and i bought the card 4 years ago (i cant remember exactly, but definitly before september 2003). Man was that a good investment!
121, then 117, then the Go model Geforce 4, then 76 and now 25.
I feel old. I still remember waiting giddily by the door waiting for my TNT2 to arrive. Is that sad?
I still have a pent 2 266mhs system with 3DFX voodoo2 12mb cards in SLI.
thank 3dfx for the ORIGINAL dual video card detup.
Just picked up a #24 the other day and considering my "loaner" video card wasn't even on said list, this is a HUGE improvement. AGP IS NOT DEAD!
SCORE my voodoo 5 5500 is number 116 on the list! awesome, lol
wow i owned more of these than i thought:
131
130
128
127
126
125
121
117
91
70
28
69 baby! oh ya!
yea! #11
121... TNT2
i've got 2 of #20 (thanks to woot), so that's like better than #10 right?
12 aint so bad
I was 117 for ages, until my Geforce crapped out. hen around last Christmas I moved up to 101. In 5 years I should have a card capable of driving Half Life 2.
I have a quad-SLI with 4 #1!!!!!
not.
