We showed you a couple patents for possible iPhone docks this morning, but a reader sent us in a photo of an actual iPhone dock. It's direct from Apple, and as such, we can't actually show the picture or else our tipster will be in deep doo-doo. But what we can do is describe it and show you an "artist's" rendition of it.
As you can "see", the dock has a grooved hole cut out of the the majority of the dock for the iPhone. It looks similar to standard iPod docks, but it's a bit longer. To the right, there's another hole, which we're guessing is for a possible Bluetooth headset? We actually have no idea what goes there.
What's also interesting is that the iPhone connector has two cables coming out of the bottom. Perhaps that's just for the development unit, but it is interesting to see.
[Jason's lack of artistic abilities are obvious - hit the jump for my much, much better rendition of this photo. - Adam]
Update: Thanks to the Poguester for pointing out that this dock was shown to a select few at the Expo, and that it is, in fact, different from the one shown at the keynote—which didn't have a hole for the magnetic Bluetooth headset. We stand by our horrible drawing and that yes, this is real, not doctored, and we have the real photo that inspired it.
It is not the one shown here at Macrumors.
What it looks like with the iPhone docked.
Adam's awesome rendering.
Thanks tipster!

I'm tempted to bring this "artist's rendition" to a kiosk and tell them I want one.
The unknown hole for "a possible Bluetooth headset"? Am I missing something? Apple announced that uber-tiny Bluetooth headset which would be about the same size as your excellently drawn hole. And those things need to recharge somehow. Lord knows Apple doesn't like people replacing batteries...
Wow - you guys are phat playa haxors with MS Paint.
This is pathetic.
so now it's a little doo-doo :)
Dayum! Who needs Adobe Illustrator when you've got MS Paint and a mouse?!
Slow news day, eh?
SWEET!!! Where can I pre-order?
and that hole is for pencils
No fan mail, please. I do it for my love of art.
Could the two chords be a USB and a AC adapter?
Maybe so that you can have that baby Chargin' a bit faster (over AC) while you're uploadin' your tunes?
i would have gone with a serif font personally because nothing says classy like serif. then again i wasn't classy enough to think to stick a wii in my pants so i really shouldn't be speaking to the subject.
So has someone seriously sent you a photo of an iPod dock that you're not posting for that person's benefit or is this a joke?
Someone sent me a photo and I can't post it.
I know what goes in the hole
It's a picture of the only such dock that Apple made, they gave it to your tipster alone.
Hence, what the "another hole" is (a unique characteristic only), and hence, your "tipster" (great scoop, btw) is in "deep doo-doo" anyway.
Is there any sweeter phrase than "unknown hole"?
Hmm. So the dock is going to look like a dock, and might have a smallish hole on the side to hold an accessory . . .
wow. Breathtaking. How do the fine folks at Apple think all this stuff up? Like, inventing the MP3, and the portable MP3 player - - and now? A "dock!" I'll bet it charges the iPhone, too!
Now draw us a giraffe!
Anyone remember Home Movies? This looks straight out of that show.
The artists rendering truly speaks to me in ways that I have not experienced since I first saw Noli Me Tangere by Fra. While clearly they have been too heavily influenced by the impressionism works of Ernest Lawson, thanks to "the unknown hole" there is an element of LeWitt reminiscent of the Four-Sided Pyramid which makes it difficult to remove oneself from the subtext of the piece.
That looks like something I drew on my Amiga 25 years ago. I can't remember what it was but I was proud of it as a 9 year old.
someone's been hard at work to level up their photoshop skills! truly amazing. i especially admire the rich surface texture and the way it reflects the light
It's a stupid dock people!!! it connects a device to a computer and might have some sort of input or output. now I admit I'm not an apple fanboy. so I don't really know how it feels, but aern't you guys going a little wild over a glorified computer cable?
You're a horrible artist - I bet you failed art class in elementary :).
HELL YEAH!
I can use my shaver charger to power the iPhone!
If somebody made a painting of the apple logo with his shit, gizmodo would buy it.they dont give a shit as long anything is concerned with apple,to them its a beautiful idea.
That was incredibly craptastic!
That hole is the same shape as the controller port on the OG NES.
I'm not saying its concrete, but I thought I saw a Koopa icon in the presentation.
Am I missing something? Dind't Stevie show off a picture of this super-secret dock at MacWorld? I'm almost absolutely sure of it...
he did, however it did not feature a mysterious hole on the side. the hole probably is for the bluetooth headset, so no real mystery there.
If the dock is really like that, it will have to be weighted; otherwise you have to figure with the iphone in upright orientation it will be very top heavy.
Because of all the unbelievable technology posting a picture of a DOCK would turn the tech industry into a circus. Honestly.
Hype factor Ten, Captain.
I canna get anymore from a crudely made drawing.
Hellsyeh! Haha it just needs weird, off-centered coloring.
i wonder how long will it take for Microsoft et al to copy that design... hmmm
Is "The Cheat" drawing for you guys these days?
Jobs DID show the dock at the Expo, and us lucky journalists even got to touch it (ooooh!!!).
The little hole to the right is, in fact, for the Bluetooth earpiece. It's also a *magnetic* little hole, so the earpiece sort of inserts *itself*.
NOW how much would you pay?...
--David Pogue
Uh...copy the idea of a dock? Yes...that's it. Apple's so brilliant they invented the idea of a dock, or better yet a dock that holds a headset! If only those big evil corporations would stop stealing ideas from Apple.
You're a marketing tool.
Art school drop-outs, unite!
I think that slot is for the quarters needed to make phone calls.
Wow, this is pathetic. I don't mean the crappy drawing, but rather the fact that the iPhone was shown at the Macworld Expo when it was introduced. I think the idiot who posted this "inside news" should be smacked across the head. The iPhone dock has been a known fact for quite awhile.
