Pretec S-Diamond is the First miCARD Available

We too were groaning when the Multimedia Card Association approved yet another memory card standard dubbed the miCARD. But after seeing Pretec's S-Diamond up close, we can kind of see why it's useful.

Similar in theory to the Kingston microSD bundles we looked at yesterday, the miCARD comes with its own USB adapter. In this case, the USB adapter looks like the size and shape of an SD card, but fits directly into your USB port. Quite handy.

Still, another memory card format means we have to shell out even more money, but that's the price of innovation.

  • It looks to me like it has a built in USB adapter and the SD card is an add on. I would go for it if I could plug the card directly into any USB without any adapters!

(don't be sloppy, don't be sloppy)

I already own a Sandisk Ultra II plus USB that gives the same kind of action, but isn't nearly as slim as that center component.

It's a great idea as it eliminates the need for an external reader as long as you've got a freindly USB port handy!

I don't really see a problem with these.

    Spelling, spelling damn damn DAMN!!

(sloppy hands...won't come clean...out damn spot!!)

  • Yeah those regular SD cards are just so damn fat!
Seriously, what is the point? It so small you could easily accidentally miss it when you are checking your jeans for items at the laundry. nice, 4gb of home movies ruined!

  • (That's hilarious Strider)

This isn't really another format to us users, more of a refinement since the physical format is compatible with the gear we have on hand. Seems win-win to me. You don't have to get it, but when your new camera fills that old 4gig flash card in 20 shots, the upgrade will still be compatible.

  • Seems like it plugs directly into a usb port by itself. see the 4 parallel contacts in the middle of the picture? Looks like usb to me. What's good about this is that it's backwards compatible with current devices that use MMC cards, using the adapter. And this thing won't be easy to lose since it's not intended to be a usb flash drive but for mobile devices instead.

One more thing. The adapter is NOT SD card, it IS MMC.

  • Yeah, you guys have it backwards. The new memory card, itself, slips into a USB port. That adapter is to allow it to work in MMC (and SD) slots. Otherwise it's exactly what I've been waiting for, which is a tiny memory card that works in devices designed for it AND USB ports natively. I can only hope this is the LAST card format, because it's certainly the most useful.
