apple's military contract

Apple Goes To War (This Time Not With Microsoft)

When Apple purchased chip manufacturer P.A. Semi, the Department of Defense was worried. Why? P.A. Semi manufactures chips for ten different military systems, and has $100 million in deals with the DoD over the next four years. And the DoD never expected Apple to keep supporting the sweet, deadly chips.

But they were wrong.

Canon Quietly Releases XL H1S and XL H1A, Lowers H1 Series Price

Today Canon has announced updates to their XL H1 1080i Pro HD camcorder, splitting the line into two offerings: the XL H1S and XL H1A, a more simplistic XL H1A will be offered at a retail price of just $5,999 this July—several thousand less that we saw the original XL H1 priced for. And the H1 classic XL H1S, available this June, will run $8,999. More »

Marantz VP-11S2 Projector Makes Pretty Pictures

It's getting harder and harder to justify paying the price of a car on a home theater projector when companies like Sony are releasing incredible projectors at budget prices, but we'd certainly take Manatz's unpriced but high end VP-11S2 1080p DLP projector if it showed up on our doorstep. The first projector on the market to feature Texas Instrument's DarkChip4 chipset, the unit's paper specs—800 lumens and 12,000:1 contrast ratio—probably do the image no justice. I mean, the freakin' color wheel spins at 10,800 RPM in near silence. If that doesn't get your motor running, I don't know what will. [marketnews via aboutprojectors]

Elecom ASP-S750 Speakers Have a Look That Jumps Out At You

Good-looking mini speakers are few and far between, IMHO, but Elecom's ASP-S750 diagonal speakers have a certain je ne sais quoi. Designed to go "forward toward the sound of fire," according to the Engrish blurb, the 2.5W-per-channel speakers come in white or silver, and full specs are below the gallery.

Sony Introduces HDMS-S1D, an 80GB Networked Digital Photo Album

Sony appears to be making a consumer-server play, introducing the $400 80GB HDMS-S1D "photo album" for the high-def enjoyment of up to 50,000 still images. You can import photos via Memory Stick slot—but also SD, CF and xD! (Way to go, Sony!) You can connect the HDMS-S1D to your TV via HDMI, and navigate slideshows using its remote control. It has a CD/DVD burner for getting and saving shots. We also see an Ethernet port, so we're going to assume there's at least some way to push photos to it from your PC (or Mac?) In addition to letting you edit, rotate, delete and group photos on screen, there are also some unique automated features:

Best Buy and Liz Claiborne Hooking Up to Make Electronics Accessories for the Girls

Liz Claiborne's jumping into bed with Best Buy to design a collection of "electronics accessories for women." Since they're for women, naturally the entire collection is composed of bags and totes for things like laptops, cameras and MP3 players. We're going to go out on a hunch and guess there's going to be a fair amount of pink involved, since the only electronics accessories women need apparently are small, pink bags to carry their small, pink electronics. Progress for women, progress for technology. Thanks, Best Buy. [Yahoo!/Reuters]

Sony Announces Digital TV for PSP

In an announcement that teases the US for our lack of our 1seg terrestrial digital broadcast, Japanese buyers of the new PSP will be able to receive DVB on their PSP. The PSP-S310 is a digital television receiver add-on for the new PSP that will run $58 and snap on the top of the unit much like their portable EyeToy. It interfaces via USB and will require a Memory Stick to function, despite a lack of DVR. Bonus pic...

M's Systems Wood Cylindrical Stereo Speakers are Great for Live Music

Specs and more pictures after the jump. More »

Heartbeat Indicator Mouse Tells You to Set Down the Dew Dude

Besides reminding you that "life's click," the Heartbeat Indicator Mouse uses sensors positioned under your thumb to assess your level of health (like, surprise, your heart rate). It also keeps tabs on how long you've worked, or at least how long you've been holding the mouse. Better yet, it can transmit all of this info via cell phone to your doc (or wife, maybe) if they want to track how close you are to seizing up in a Red Bull/Doritos coma while you're cruising Second Life.
