Google Streetview Camera Vehicles Spotted All Over US

Google has its eye on us with its fleet of camera vehicles shooting pictures for its Streetview mapping service, so we decided to turn the tables and put our eyes on Google. Responding to our request for pictures of the Google camera cars and vans, eagle-eyed Giz readers have been spotting the Chevy Cobalts, VW Beetles and vans with cameras up top, all over the United States.

Looks like a nifty little new red camera mounted on top of some of them. Check out our gallery for shots from Boise, Idaho; Chicago; Whitemarsh, Maryland; Southern California; Evanston, Illinois; and Redwood City, California. This is an ongoing project, so go ahead, spot the Google Streetview vehicles and send in your pics!

It's interesting the range of models they have for these. Obviously, the ones on the Bugs are the finished models while the ones on the Cavaliers appear to be more prototypish. The mini-van models appear to be designed for more protection.

They're probably just contractors using their own cars. Would make sense to not retain a bunch of fleet vehicles when you can just pay milage out to people to use their own cars.

So if I see one of these on the road and follow them for miles and miles, days and days, will I become a renowned Street View celebrity OR will they have me arrested, erase all that data and start over? :)

Actually, I wonder if people aren't already doing that to some extent.

perhaps the one on the van is for high speed use along the highways, as it would have to take many more pictures a second than at street speeds

Saw one of these in Madison, Wisconsin too. No photo (walking the dog) but pretty sure it was a Cobalt with a camera on the roof.

I saw one in Republic, MO. It's a small town of like 10,000 people. I'm guessing the guy was lost. However, I followed it around anyway, just in case.
