The Palm Centro has been courting much attention lately thanks to a host of blurry pictures and news of its diminutive stature. Today we have the first (leaked) press photo shot of the device and it does not look half bad.
We have no news in the way of clarified specification from that of what has already been reported. The main details are; the device shall run on EVDO and it shall be pitched at the youth market. Further, the full QWERTY keypad will be complimented by a touchscreen and the price will be a speculated, very reasonable, $99. Sprint shall have exclusive rights for 90 days, after the 90 days mark a free for all shall likely ensue.
The new picture shows a sophisticated looking device, not only will it be the smallest Treo to date, but the supposed youth market orientation may have been altered from earlier suggestions. After all, the colour scheme looks sophisticated and the youth only like their devices in a generic, iPod white plastic finish, as depicted in earlier shots. No official word on specification or release date as yet, but we will keep you posted. (Hey, it's what we do; don't sweat it).

Though the silver bar is still not the most attractive implementation of a navigation bar, this phone looks worlds better than the blurry photos we had seen earlier. The keys don't looks half-bad either. I would consider buying this.
Definitely better looking than the other shots. I bet the ole iPhone prison fella wished he'd tried to sneak something this size in instead.
oooooooo purrty
$99 after a 2-year agreement or $99 outright? (probably a dumb question) I'd like to replace my Sanyo M1 w/ this.
Oh, man, looks so much better now. I might get one.
I wonder if there will be a GSM version?
it actually comes in a variety of colors, I personally have seen it in both the white and red finishes.
oK, so now let's bump the RAM at least to 128, preferably to 256, and I might update my GSL M 68 with that one...
Although the could still somewhat loose the keyboard and add a HTC-3300-like micro-trackball.
oh, and forgot to ask: 2 MP camera on-board? And at least microSD poleeeez. Won't buy it otherwise;-)
Best looking Palm in a long time...Good work.
I'm interested in knowing how big this thing is compared to an iPhone because the iPhone is honestly too big for my pocket =/
@LillieDesigns: I hear a Sizemodo in our future.
I have to admit, this looks much better than the earlier blurry photos of this device. Looks like Palm might have something with this one (hopefully there will be a GSM version as well).
As a current Treo user (just upgraded to the 755p a week ago), this phone looks better than I thought it would. Maybe my g/f would like this one instead of inheriting my previous Treo 650.
It really does look pretty good. And from the looks of that particular screen shot, 3 decent IM clients are included.
I just wonder how much smaller this unit can be compared to other Treo's.
@DOMZ: Yeah I wouldn't doubt that $99 being for newcomers or after a 2 Year term.
I hope I'm wrong.
Yeah it is pretty sexy, much better looking than their Treo series. ugh
i thought the corrext term was "prematurely squirted"?
@Simpsons-Movie-ruled: correct
If it has WiFi, that would be the greatest phone ever.
Looking pretty good (seems like the silver with black frame around screen is all the rage lately). But those keys look too tiny... unless they do predictive spellchecking à la iPhone.
If an ipod nano doesn't materialize soon, this shall be my new phone. $99!
two-year agreement or not, it's a good deal...
This Palm looks hot. The price is great too (if true).
Apparently, the comment system has eaten my first two attempts to comment, so here you go:
1) Doesn't look like the current PalmOS - anti-aliased fonts and no pixelated scroll bar.
2) Engadget continues its shady behavior - they post their own story (with the pic), never mentioning Gizmodo, and linking to uneasysilence.com as their source. Who does Uneasysilence credit for the pic? Gizmodo. Is Engadget that afraid of the big, bad Giz?
Too bad it Palm because that mean the battery life will be maybe half hour and I bet still no wi-fi.
Looks far better than the iphone.
@xstephx: watch it man, you may get burned alive for that. lol
PS.: I don't like the iPhone
PS.: The thing just changed colors and now everyone wants one
PS.: Engadget letter really got to palm
Hope that thing is bottom heavy. The ergonomics on the keyboard look painful...
This looks great! Now I can buy another phone that works like shit, for less. I have had several Treo's and they all blow, although my newest one took a trip into the dogs water dish and aided by my mad ninja skill's I was bale to retrieve it fast enough to prevent any serious damage...thus far! (insert sound of doom here)
looks sweet and doesnt run Windows bloatware edition what more can you ask for.
I think Sprint picked the perfect screenshot for this phone, showcasing the one thing I truly miss with my iPhone, Instant Messaging. Before this new era in my mobile technology, I was a SideKick user, and there's no better phone for AIM.
I have yet to jailbreak my iPhone, but if someone made a modestly hot AIM client for it, I'd apply whatever hack it takes to install it.
Same big dumb form factor (too thick) and small low-res screen. palm needs to realize that changing around the hard-keys and making the device a different color isn't called "innovation". geez, whats going on back there? do they not look at the other phones on the market?
Some of you guys really enjoy bashing Palm. There operating system has far less crashes and crapware than Windows Mobile and this device is far more sexual than you can ever imagine. It is not your traditional brick, now the name matches the product, it is literally a computer for your palm...not all of your extremities.
I might have bought one if Palm had said it would offer it in GSM. Instead, they are going for CDMA -- which is only really used in the US!? Palm, you're losing your shirt to Apple and RIM. And you're shooting yourself in the foot anyway?
Not that it wouldn't be a holdover til the 3G iPhone shows up... but them's the breaks ... sorry, Palm, you're just making yourself more irrelevant every day.
@macserv: Yeah, what's with that? 3G is the big thing I want, but who the heck puts out a smartphone these days that has no IM client!?
Look a lot like the Sony ericsson K550i to me
[www.sonyericsson.com]
I was at the Sony store today and saw the Sony Ericsson K550i......well, at least they tried...
Good luck palm, I am looking at other phones for upgrades now and will not look back!
Wait, where's the 5-way navigator buttons? I really use them a lot with my 700p.
@macserv: have you tried Meebo for the iphone? you should be able to instant message anyone.

Otto, Centro, Gandolf. Whatever the name of Palm's new handset, we'll be finding out on September 12th: A teaser page is up for the forthcoming European launch of the new smartphone.
We are still yet to get a sniff of this one in the UK - where's the justice? All we get is a selection of fat bricks with a Palm operating system on it - check out the Palm mobile phones we get - appalling!
