Pirates Stealing XP Twice as Much as Vista, Microsoft Doesn't Know How to Feel

wingenadvantage.jpgSo here's a good news/bad news situation for Microsoft. The good news is that people aren't pirating Vista as much as XP. The bad news is that people are pirating XP twice as much, meaning that even when given a choice between each for free, people are sticking with trusty old XP. They can't even get people to steal Vista, right?! Well, not really.

To be fair, this probably has a lot to do with the fact that Vista is a lot harder to pirate than XP, which is pretty much cake to get for free. I mean, what kind of pirate would willfully put up with Windows Genuine Advantage when they could just not worry about it and use XP? But yeah, I'm sure a lot of people are pirating XP for the same reason people are still buying new computers with XP: Vista is still scary. [News.com]

  • I haven't had a single problem with Vista..

  • haha, that's funny.

  • I am able to enjoy Vista at home and XP at work. It is not really a problem to use both.

Not to mention XP is a smaller download. 700MB is a lot better to torrent than well over a gig, and being easier to get cracks for it helps too. Heck, I breathed new life into a few boxes because of it :p

I'm running it in Parallels, no problems, aside from teh initial print driver issues. It's purty...

  • I've been running Vista Ultimate since the release date, and I have loved it. I did have a couple small problems, but they are fixed.

I love it - and I love all the uptime.

  • One of the things that I noticed with distributors is that many of them manage to install VISTA on minimal equipment. VISTA is an OS that needs hardware upgrades and distributors are making a good few bucks when the costumer returns for upgrades, just so VISTA can load. I've also seen distributors blame the lack of performance on VISTA and do downgrades to the now more expensive XP. (I dont know about you guys, but I've certainly seen a spike in the price of XP lately)

Lets say you have the cash to get yourself a brand new VISTA machine with all the hardware that you need to run the OS at perfection. You still need to do the software upgrades for commonly used programs. Do you have the ability to run XP programs in VISTA??? ...hell yeah. Will they always work properly??? ...hell no. Will VISTA run all XP programs??? ...hell no. Yet another issue... COMPATIBILITY. So who's fault is this? Software makers fell asleep at the wheel? MS not being completly open with their stuff? The real issue here is the costumer. When companies can't get their sh!t together the consumer gets it in the arse.

If you offer the consumer a choice between 2 pounds of poop and 5 pounds of poop, the consumer will take the 2 pounds of poop over the 5 just because it makes less of a mess. The problem was that people's choice of the 2 pounds worth of poop was taken away, and were forced to take the 5 pounds worth of poop. We're seing that costumers want less of a mess and distributors are starting to get the idea.

^^^LOL... yeah, I know... I made the analogy and Im sticking to it.

    No pun intended^^^

    ROTFL

  • FYI, it is LESS difficult to pirate Vista. All the new Vista Ultimate rips are Dell OEM. They install without ever asking for a product key, require no patching or post-installation procedures, accept all updates and passes WGA.

  • no problems with 3rd party programs?

  • I had an issue with Windows Update on new lappy that came with Vista Premium pre-loaded. It worked fine for about 4 months and then just stopped working. I tried troubleshooting the issue with MS but they were not able to help. It was sorta scary to see how close Windows Update is to the core of the OS. If it would have been able to completely uninstall and then reinstall then it wouldn't have been much of an issue.

Regardless, I ended up doing a full restore and now she is up and running like a champ. Overall I enjoy using Vista to XP. Sure it's a resource hog and boot/shut down times are insane, but its positives over XP over weigh the pain it is to do a complete system restore.

  • has it nothing to do with the possibility that allot of pc's cant handle vista? its pretty spec heavy if i remember correctly..
    oh well...

  • I thought Vista sucked, to be honest.

  • Yeah, you couldn't pay me to use Vista over XP.

  • With the easy install bios-patching tools available, Vista is *easier* to pirate than XP these days. That being said, my legitimate copy of x64 Vista took ~5 months to destroy its own partition and stop booting entirely, so I'm back on XP, and loving it.

The performance difference from going back to XP is so great, that I'm holding off the computer upgrade I was looking at, because it feels like I've already got a new machine. I certainly don't miss all the compatibility, stability, and I/O problems I was having under Vista.

  • New pc/mac commercial in 3...2...1..

  • I have vista ultimate for my home PC. I tried to do a inplace upgrade of my work PC and it crashed near the end. Luckly it did a rollback with no issue.

I did a clean install of Vista Ultimate 64bit on my home PC and it runs OK. Its pretty, but it appears to run slower. I can't seem to get drivers for my Dell laser printer. You might run into issues with 3rd party software autorun features not liking the 64bit OS. If you just open the CD rom and look for the installer, the software seems to install fine.

I was going to try some games, but my DVD drive just died and waiting for Newegg to RMA replace.

  • How does anyone know how many pirated copies there are?

  • Image of Kaiser-Machead Kaiser-Machead at 02:58 PM on 12/04/07 *

I like how the warning says that "you may be a victim of software counterfeiting", when the person reading it is likely the counterfeiter, or got it knowingly :p

  • vista is not a lot harder to pirate. sorry, mike.

  • I've been using vista home premium at home, and ultimate at work since february. other than a few programs that needed to be updated, and an old scanner at home that HP will not be making Vista drivers for, i've had no problems at all. I love vista. Sure it needs better hardware to run smoothly, but if you can afford it why not... who doesn't want a faster computer anyways, vista or not. Gives me an excuse to upgrade.

  • @Kaiser-Machead: Also, you can burn a copy of XP to a CD-R. To pirate Vista you need a DVD burner, which is harder to come by, and more expensive.

  • @xint: Show me 1 program designed for Windows XP that doesn't run in Windows Vista. Also, one that doesn't run fine if you set it to "compatibility mode".

  • "this probably has a lot to do with the fact that Vista is a lot harder to pirate than XP"
No, it's not. Most of the copies on the torrents now have Vista Loader 2.0 integrated into the install -- it's just as easy to install as a corporate edition of XP is: just put the CD in and install. And even if you could only find a plain copy, you can still easily find Vista Loader 2.0, which installs itself by simply double clicking on a batch file, on torrents.

"what kind of pirate would willfully put up with Windows Genuine Advantage when they could just not worry about it and use XP?"
But XP has Windows Genuine Advantage too if you're not careful about blocking it. And besides, you don't have to worry about Windows Genuine Advantage with any of the methods of pirating Vista.

Seriously, where have you guys been?

  • @lafond66:
AIM 5.9 (and below) which is still quite popular, BTW, since the new version is so bloated.

    @lafond66:
No, you don't. It can be stripped down to fit it on a CDR.

    @xint:
Why do you (and others) capitalize entire names of products? VISTA, IPOD, APPLE, etc. They're not acronyms. I'm just saying...

  • I hate to say it, but I downloaded a copy of Vista a while back and it was easier to crack than XP. The most interesting part is that it has actually crashed less than my Mac just recently upgraded to Leopard. As far as programs working I really haven't had any trouble running anything I used before on XP.

  • I'm actually thinking of getting a Mac instead of a new PC. Macs have better backwards compatibility than Windows PCs do, plus I don't have to worry about spyware and malware as much. Although they're a bit more expensive, in the long run I figure it's worth it.

  • Image of Kaiser-Machead Kaiser-Machead at 04:09 PM on 12/04/07 *

@hughjass: It's entirely possible that some people actually scream the names of products as they talk.

  • my distaste for Vista stems more from the actual user interface as opposed to its performance. It seems needlessly complicated and excessive. IMO, sometimes less is more. That's not to say I won't snag a torrent sometime soon ;)

  • @Kaiser-Machead: [imagines said person] that's damn funny

  • there was a similar thing happening with win2000 and XP when XP was first released but it was not to this extent.

  • @lafond66: I'd venture the VAST, VAST, VAST majority of people with computers capable to run Vista have DVD burners. Like easily over 90%.

  • Our IT departments ghosts images of our XP build to new machines, and 1 out of 50 or so will suddenly show the genuine advantage warning. We are obviously legally licensed and all with a corporate product key. You click "Continue" there is a 1 out 10 chance you may see it once more before it finally goes away. Still a mystery and a big reason why we won't be going to Vista for a while.

Hell, my legal copy of Vista at work didn't accept the key on the packaging! I had to try another key from another media kit before it finally worked.

  • @ LAFOND66 : any XP app that encrypts or is meant to hide folders. BSoD!

I've not had any major issues with Vista. It feels less "techie" and more general-user focused. But it still has the means to satisfy IT-types.

I've got XP on one machine at home and Vista on the laptop and I find myself using Vista 95%.

  • @Wegmans: Did you try pressing the little button on the front of the computer that switches it on?

  • @izzy9985: Go Hackintosh -- the best of both worlds.

  • @Kaiser-Machead:
    LMAO!

  • My vista laptop,2Gb of ram, intel core 2 duo @1.8 is as fast as my Xp Pc 1Gb of ram, P4@ 2.8

  • @izzy9985: The only thing macs do better is basic stuff, like surfing the internet and typing. If you want to do anything else, its more economic to get a cheap pc with XP. And seriously, surfing the internet and typing are pretty damn straightforward.

  • I have left some large plastic containers in my garage full of old food scraps, coffee grounds, the cartons some food came in and it has been there for nearly 5 days and no one has taken it! Some might think it is because it is completely without value to anyone but I know it is because of the beefed up security I tweaked by putting lids on the containers. Don't try to tell me otherwise!

  • Runs Super Smooth 2 me.. : )

  • I have XP on my gaming rig and Vista on my laptop. Vista has been working fine for me except for being incompatible with slightly older software and my old lexmark printer has no vista drivers. I personally would stick to XP but find Vista not that bad.

  • yeah I don't get it.. I'm using Vista right now and it isn't so bad... why does everyone hate Vista so much..?

  • Gizmo_dude - we hate it because we've actually compared performance on identical machines running Vista and XP - why would you buy a fast computer and slow it down by installing Vista - we feel the need for speed - vista doesn't.
