iriver s10 Slam Dunks the shuffle One Day Later

To hell with that Cupertino Fruit Company, if you want a full-featured portable audio player check out the iriver s10, not much bigger than the iPod shuffle but bringing a 1.15-inch 128x96 OLED screen and FM recording, too. The 2GB flash-based player is pendant-small at 1.6 inches x 1.2 inches and it's just a third of an inch (10mm) thick, plus it weighs far less than an ounce, only 1.9g heavier than that screenless shuffle.

That screen saps the s10's battery life a lot quicker than the shuffle, though, lasting just eight hours. No matter, we'd rather wear this pretty-screened bauble around our necks than go clipping on a gray object that looks like a half a stick of chewing gum like all the other sheep will be doing. But that's just us.

  • i think you guys meant 2gb...at least i hope so

  • The thing looks like an old school mini lite brite toy. Why don't you wear this around your neck silly rabbit. I think 1gb portability goodness suits us *sheep* just fine thank you. Baaaaah.:)

  • 2mb player huh? Sounds Sa-WEET!

  • Actually I think the clip idea is a good one.
You can close up a bag of chips with it and stuff.

    IRiver rocks!

  • I've never really been a fan of IRiver..

  • nah, it's 2GB, but i fully agree with Charlie White - shuffle is a crap. It's a sweet crap only because the itunes.

  • Image of Geisrud Geisrud at 09:52 AM on 09/13/06 *

2GB. But I'm not sure what the screen is for, no video support.

  • Uhh to show what song is playing?

And apparently also to control it... I dont see any buttons.
Well Other than Volume +/- on the side.

Anyone have a website that actually has information. That Cnet site just has like measurements.

  • Why do you need video? A screen is helpful for you know, menus and stuff.

  • Looks like a SUPER TINY version of the Clix, which is an amazing player. I'm curious to get my hands on this. Looks hot and as small as Apple's new shuffle, but with a kick-ass OLED screen!

  • oh snap!

too bad no one will buy it because it's not from that Cupertino Fruit Company.

  • and of course i preordered a shuffle last night

so lets see here, for the fruit i get:

    ~ a clip (w0w)
    ~ no screen
~ half the storage of the s10
~ "new" earbuds (which i'll never use)
~ custom laser ingraving (visible via microscope)
~ 12hr battery (makes me feel good, not all that useful seeing as 8hrs is plenty)

if this iriver isn't at least $149 i got gyped

  • But that's just us.

    Indeed it is.

  • "iriver?"

  • ohh didn't see the white part below. Too bad about that.

  • iRiver were never that bad - personally I prefer iAudio, but prefer flash players so alas the iAudio 6 (stunning and impressive) is a no-go due to it's hard drive (every review states this slows down response compared to similar flash units around).

    so anyway - comparisons:

    iRiver s10
    Weight: 17.5g
    Dimensions: 42 x 30 x 10.8 mm
    Interface: USB 2.0
    Size: 2gb
    Battery: 8hrs
    Price: ??
Support: ASF, MP3, Ogg Vorbis, WMA, BMP

    ipod Shuffle (2nd gen)
    Weight: 16g (0.55 ounces)
    Dimensions: 41 x 27 x 10.4
Interface: USB 2.0 via dock (audio jack ???)
    Size: 1gb
    Battery: 12hrs
    Price: $79 (£55)
Support: MP3, AAC, Audible (formats 2, 3 and 4), WAV, AIFF

    Both flash players
usb via dock seems a bit odd to me, don't know how they'll up the speeds to real usb 2.0 over that. As far as open formats go the iRiver seems way better.

Personally the clip does it for me. Not as a main player, but for running and excercising I'll probably get a shuffle. However as a main player? Don't know yet - personally a flash version of the iAudio 6 would be ideal - they're open access and design makes me prefer them over other similar products.

  • I've long been a fan of iriver but this thing has an 8 hour battery life, that's really too low these days. Shame though as in all other aspects it absolutely blows the shuffle G2 away. Better off getting a Clix and having video support, a bigger screen and a long battery life.

  • hmm...I may have to get one of these for working out.

  • so its from apple so you won't buy it because you're afraid of looking "like everyone else", are you in 5th grade? obviously nothing else about the product is to be concerned about. hows the UI on that bastard? how much does it cost? how durable is it?

  • I'd love to see pics of this in someone's hands to get a better idea of just how small it is.

  • Tell ya what, draw a 1.6" x 1.2" rectangle on a post-it note, cut it out with scissors, and lay it on your hand. Then you'll have a better idea of how small it is.

  • Not that I like the screenless shuffle or anything, but the last time I tried to look at the display on my Zen Muvo MP3 player while mountain biking up a steep hill I almost went into the rocky cliff-side. Just a thought.

  • Image of weatherman weatherman at 11:32 AM on 09/13/06 *

That new Shuffle is butt-ugly. And I hate the clip - unless it can be removed. iRiver's products are (from what I've seen) good quality and this one blows the Shuffle out of the water (NPI).

  • looks like grandmas earings. grandma is cool, though.

  • Happy now, apple haters? Something that you can listen to System of a Down encoded in ogg, Vorbis, dcx.200.xxx, 133t-c0d1ng, blah blah blah blah

  • Now, I'm prety sure C.net Asia was just being sloppy when filling out the specs but... according the them it also has FM radio and voice recording... heck, maybe it does.

Price. As always I want to know price.

  • At least you're not bitter about it!

Yeah, I can't wait to be at the top of my fashion game with an LCD screen pendant hung around my neck with that sweet, sweet nylon lanyard. I'll really stand out!

  • it will cost $119-129 depending on what color you get. HAhahaha...

oh wait, thats apple who color prices stuff.. oops.

  • that is sweet. more deets, please!

  • Where are the playback controls? Not on the back... are they? (Just seems more difficult when the buttons are on the back and what you need to see is on the front). Or is it a nice slider? Or a touchscreen?

  • Spicedham:

    look here http://www.asia.cnet.com/reviews/musicplay/0,39050467,3927...

It shows the player witht the USB dongle attached...they're about the same size!

    Worf:

    It uses the DClick system:

You just press on the edge of the bezel on the top/bottom/left/right to navigate the screens.

You can see it in action on the U10 here:
    http://youtube.com/watch?v=bCvziVahIgY

  • For a moment I misread the "s" in the name "S10" as a dollar sign...pity =D

Korean mp3 players are awesome. Fuiyoooh it's smaller than my mobiBLU DAH-1500i. From the pictures on CNet Asia it looks like they're doing the same thing as mobiBLU where the headphone jack doubles up for data as well.

  • The main thing that makes the Clix really nice is the Macromedia Flash-based UI. The CNET page says the U10 won't support Flash so it probably has a pretty clunky UI.

  • Nice design, I'm sure the price will be near Apple's new 1gb shuffle for competition grabbing. Definately worth considering - like the DClick system (until it starts clicking accidentally in your pocket depending on sensitivity)

Personally not a fanboy - prefer the openness and usability of the iAudio's personally (wish they'd just take out an iAudio 6 with flash rather than a small hard drive - who's idea was that one???). However, design-wise I'm probably going to get a shuffle because it would be great for going running - no bouncing in pockets or around your neck. Not a main player, just a small extra for those moments of excercise :)

  • There really isn't much in the size between the iRiver and the iPod Shuffle. This neat graphic shows quite accurately how they compare http://www.sizeasy.com/page/featured. The shuffle is 1.07 x 1.62 x 0.41 inches and the iRiver is 1.2 x 1.6 x 0.33 inches. Must say I'm impressed how the iRiver squeezes a display into this size too.

  • Wow. Charlie White seems to have gotten up on the wrong side of the bed this morning. So much anger! If folks wanna buy iPods, let 'em. Jeesh.

  • It's a really nice object, but pretty 'spensive.

  • I purchased an I-River S10 while here in Korea. I have had it for about a week. Here are my observations:

The sound is excellent. The headphones are nothing special (I bought some Sony EX-51's, which don't clip hold, but sound great for around $30. You have a lot of control over the bass, field width, there is an EQ, etc. You have a fair amount of functionality here. I also demo'ed the I-River S7, which is about the same size, but doesn't have a screen. Sound seemed identical (through stock headphones), although the S7 has an external button to change between some preset audio settings (less functionality, but great sound). I sometimes wish there were a preset button on my S10, as clicking and hunting through menus on the S10 can get annoying.

There is a problem with the clock. It keeps time UNTIL you start going into settings menus and adjusting things. Then, for some reason, the clock falls a few minutes behind. The problem compounds itself over time, and a few days later, you'll find your clock is off by 10 or 20 minutes. This is probably a firmware issue they haven't figured out yet. The clock is fine if you make no settings adjustments to the unit, but you'll find yourself changing settings all of the time.

The S10 (and S7) both play loud and clear at various volume levels (until maybe above the 85 to 90% level, where some distortion is present). No problems here, and there is plenty of good sound.

My biggest beef with the S10 is that it took me 15 minutes to figure out how to set the screen so that I could watch the "dancing lights" without the screen going black. And I still fiddle with it for 3 to 5 minutes every time I attempt to change this. The menus are very confusing in this regard, and there are different settings in different locations controlling what happens to the screen saver and the LCD backlight. They are two different entities in two different places. Sometimes, you are required to push and hold the right side of the screen to save a setting, but you're not necessarily prompted to do so. The same can be said for finding some menu items, which you wouldn't know were there otherwise.

And yeah, the reviews about the software are correct. Use it to update the firmware from time-to-time, but otherwise forget about it. It's easier to simply drag and drop the files via Windows.

  • I have an iriver S10 and it's super awesome fantastic and way better than a screenless shuffle. I like to play the songs i want when I want and I love the visualizations and the clock is beautiful and it's so tiny, smaller than a battery. The color is vivid and the d-click system means no crappy buttons everywhere...sweet. I will stop ranting now. If you want to buy a shuffle fine, it's way cheaper, but the s10 is a beauty. People come up to me and ask me what it is all the time.

  • Oh and I figured out the menus just fine. It comes with a manual and if you read it, it makes perfect sense.

  • The big problem for iriver is that there's just too many upcoming players, and consumers would not know which one is THE one. There's the W10, the Clix(2?), the S10, the T10, the H10, the E10, the U10, the S7, Unit 2, and god calamity! Luckily Apple "hid" its old players on apple.com/ipod when the 5G iPod was released and only advertised the current three!
