Mobiblu Cubisto: Who Wants to Carry a Cube in Their Pocket?

cubisto.jpgThe mobiblu Cubisto digital audio player comes to us from Korea and comes in two sizes, 1GB and 2GB. It's pretty much a bare bones player, supporting MP3 and WMA files formats. Obviously the hook here is its wacky cube shape, but that only gets it so far. Besides, what would you rather have in your pocket, a bulky cube or a tiny-as-a-postage-stamp iPod shuffle? No launch date is known, but expect the 1GB model to cost $90 and the 2GB version $110. If it's just a $20 difference, why wouldn't you spring for the 2GB model? A friendly note to companies: if you want us to part with our hard-earned American dollars, please don't release the same product over and over again and expect us to bite. Thank you.

  • is that a mobiblu Cubisto or are you just happy to see me?

  • Actually I got one for my gf and she loves it better than her ipod mini. We live in NY and lots of people are always stopping her and asking her about it. Obviously it isn't the most convenient to carry in your pocket, but that's why they have headphone lanyards. It looks great to wear better looking that the shuffle.

  • I'll take a shuffle. Oh wait, it doesn't have a screen. Ok, give me the MobiBlu.

  • ONE... cut a hole in the box!

  • It's small, m'kay? It's so light that it doesn't need to go in a pocket, unless you're wearing something tight to show off your muscles/rack, which none of you have. Just drop it under your shirt, and it will rest invisibly on your protruding abdominal wall.

  • No thanks, I'll wait for the Mobiblu Dodecahedron. More sides = better music.

  • Hey, what's with all the Mobiblu player hatin'? Granted the name sucks, and this featured version is lame because it's bare bones, but I've had a 1 gig mobiblu cube for over year and half now and it rocks. Back then for the same price you could get a crappy 256 shuffle with no screen, meanwhile I got something that fits any pocket, and can record the radio and, somehow, voices.
Gizmodo rocks, but all the iPod love here is disturbing, because with iPods you're paying for the name, battery life sucks, and there's plenty out there that does more for the $. Just keep an open mind.

  • Everyone's copying Apple's strategy these days. ;)

  • Actually I got one for my gf and she loves it better than her ipod mini.

No idea how old your gf is, but In Style magazine's December issue shows a couple of these mobiblus encrusted in blue and pink Swarovski crystals and touted them as gifts for teenage girls.

Perhaps they have a niche market with the female persuasion? Although I must say, I'm a woman and although I think these are actually kind of cute, I'd never buy them.

  • So something less than 1 cubic inch counts as bulky now? Most people I know have keyrings with more sharp edges, more weight and surface area than that. Even a Bic lighter, or small cell phone is bulkier.

  • ONE... cut a hole in the box!
as probably the only person to get that reference may i just say that snl usually sucks anymore so that justin timberlake episode was quite entertaining and still makes me laugh

BTW if the size of the last few models is any indication of how big this one will be, then using words like "bulky" to describe it as compared to the shuffle doesn't show your utterly devoted fanboyism for Jobs at all. The shuffle is a crappy device with no screen or real features, it isn't an innovation, or even worth it. you can buy an mp3 player with no screen for 9 bucks, and if its size you want there are plenty that are nice and small. Swiss army makes one that fits into a key chain pocket knife ... and it has a screen and adjustable settings.

  • I have an original 2 gig Cube(dah 1500i), and it is a TINY bit bulky, but only if you are wearing tight pants.
Solution: Don't wear girl pants (unless you are a girl, then you can wear it as an earing if you really want).

  • So, why isn't this 8 or 10GB by now?
