Samsung P2 Touch Interface Up Close (Video)

Since the YP-P2 is Samsung's attempt to take on the iPod touch, we thought we'd show you a touching video—one that Jennifer and I shot in a crowded Starbucks today—depicting its (mostly) touch-friendly interface. [Samsung]

  • kinda cool looken. but what kinda formats does it taken and give a 360 look at the unit its self

  • thats cool it has blue tooth. i clicked the jump and saw its format support. doesnt seem to me ill find anther mp3 player with a large format support like creative.

  • @Photo library on YP-P2:

    eww. it lags?

  • WTF is that thing running on a 386? So slow..

What about EQ, Surround(SRS?), or Bass settings? No frills or what?

What bit rates are supported, my whole library is 192kb. Anything less is uncivilized.

Yeah..... an internet video is never the end-all be-all indicator of how responsive an interface is. That's like looking at a screen shot of a HDTV on your old SVGA monitor and saying how crappy the TV is. Especially if the person demoing has never had experience with it before.

I got some hands on time with one a few weeks ago and had no issues. If I didn't already have a 3rd Gen nano and Zune 30 I'd be looking at picking one up, I could never justify a 3rd player to my girl.

  • hmm.

    OK.

I'd draw comparisons to other touch-based UIs that also include photo gallery functions but its pointless. Lag is lag and since its entirely possible for other devices in the YP-P2s general price range to be completely lag-free, there's no excuse for lag here.

As far us judging based on a video...well you don't need to see something in real life to see that the dang thing lags. You swipe your finger, get one of those "please wait" winding circle thingies, THEN flip to the next image.

And all an HD quality video of the photo gallery appb and/or seeing it in real life would do is let me watch the "please wait" logo for a half a second on what is surely a nice, crisp Samsung LCD. In higher-than-youtube resolution.

    Bleh.

Probably what is happening is the Samsung gallery app doesn't resize and optimize photos the way some other *ahem* touch based devices do upon synchronization. So it struggles to slog through full-size images that are way too big for its little screen.

    Or the OS just sucks.

Either way, if Samsung wants a shot at the throne its details like this that will hold it back.

  • seriously, you have to double tap?
i do enough of that on the comp!
(not really, i set windows to web select...)
Honestly, a spec analyser is nice, but i got better things to gawk at with my ipod touch than how my music looks in its waveform composition broken down into seperate frequencies and represented with tiny bars.

I tried one at Best Buy. Crizzap.

  • I tried this at a Best Buy as well. The touch interface is awful, Nothing beats the iPhone is the touch department.

  • @sotark: Or the iPod touch which can be had for only $50 more.

  • So, really? The main menu has that weird little "icons looming up from the murky depths of the screen" thing when you move your finger up and down?

Who the hell at Samsung thought making the main menu so that you can't see all the options at a given time was a good idea?

"Hmmm, I want to look at pictures, let's see, is it down here? Up here? Damn, it must be in here somewhere....."

  • You guys please stop with the iPhone/touch bullshit. Seriously. Its gettin really really old. I cant take it anymore. Its making me not wanna visit your site anymore. Honestly. So the iPod Touch is a direct rip off my Cowon D2 then I guess? No? Please just calm down with all the iBiz..Please.

  • I read on Engadget that you can swap it into a less-flashy, easier-to-use menu. Samsung's other recent players (the S5 etc.) seem to have gone this way too, they have a whole bunch of "skins". Written in Flash, apparently.

  • It has buttons on the edge too, apparently, so you can use it without having to look at it, which was a major pain in the ass on their previous touchpanel MP3 players.

  • I just wanted to see the two boats crash into each other. Lame.

  • Seems to me if you use the main menu touch interface you would constantly have a big finger smudge mark directly in the middle of the screen.
    Bad design.

Kind of dig it - not so in love with the monochromaticness of it though. But it's a nice entry into the market, in that I like the direction the market is taking.

  • you guys have me mixed up i dont know which one to buy now
