Samsung YP-R1 PMP Plays Your Torrented Episodes of 30 Rock
We're loving Samsung's new line of PMPs, and as lifelong haters of forced video conversion, we're especially glad that Samsung's been throwing us torrent-using pirates a bone with great codec support and a 2.7-inch touchscreen in its new YP-R1 PMP. More » -

Samsung YP-S3 Caught On Video
Our female alter egos at Tech Digest just scored a video hands-on with Samsung's new YP-S3 MP3 player. The iPod nano rival should be out this June and is quite similar to its Cupertino competition, with a screen only 0.2-inches smaller and comparable music, photo and video playback abilities. The Samsung adds a built-in FM radio and a 2GB option to accompany the usual 4GB and 8GB models. [Tech Digest] -

Samsung's YP-S2 Pebble MP3 Players Probably Hurt When Thrown
These Samsung YP-S2 Pebble MP3 players look quite similar to the Creative Zen Stone (because they both look like small rocks), and hold about 1GB of MP3s and WMAs. They've got about 10 hours of playback, but don't do a whole lot else (other than looking and feeling like rocks). They'll be available in the UK around May, but no release date or pricing yet for the US. [Shiny Shiny] -

Sony Ericsson and Samsung Top Greenpeace Green List; Nintendo Worse Than Exxon on Crack?
For consumer electronics companies, going green (and vocally so) is the new going Apple white, though Apple's only halfway on the train. Greepeace's sixth guide to greener electronics tells us just how well they're doing. They're a bit nutty, but they are using definite criteria in this survey. Topping the list are Sony Ericsson, Samsung and Sony—not so surprising. Shocking: Nintendo's dead last, the first "global brand" to net zeros across the board. Does Greenpeace hate Nintendo more than Apple or something? No, Nintendo just gives out zero information about any of their policies or practices with toxic chemicals or green plans. Hence, FAIL. Samsung Retreating from Japan, Ending Consumer Sales
With sales in Japan amounting to less than one percent of its total sales, Samsung has decided to pull back from the land of ramen vending machines due to "poor profitability." As of the end of the October, Samsung's no longer selling any of its consumer products in Japan, though it'll continue to sell computer monitors directly to businesses and components like memory chips. The retreat will "have no impact on Samsung's bottom line." We could speculate on some of the reasons on why no one in Japan bought Samsung products, but uh, we're just not gonna go there. [NYT] -

Samsung a737 Live Video Slider Available
The Samsung SGH-a737 slider has been announced for availability on AT&T. The little lightweight only packs a 1.3MP camera, but its live video sharing through HSDPA support does a little to make up for the low res images. Of course, the phone also supports Bluetooth, streaming music through AT&T and partners, and storage up to 4GB through MicroSD. Wow, that's the size of the discontinued iPhone! It'll run you $50 with contract and rebate. And it's well worth the price if you live in a rural area to which slider technology hasn't yet permeated. But chances are, you don't. [at&t] -

Samsung to Beyoncé: We're Not "Ready for All This Jelly"
When Samsung promised to make their "Beyoncé-themed phone," a curvy mock-up made the rounds of gadget locker rooms everywhere. But we knew it would be complete crap. And we were right, as proven by this SGH-F300's (UpStage's) new red and gold paint job (completely void of curvy goodness). Even if Samsung didn't make their music phone to look just like Beyoncé, they could have at least modified it for us tolick its toes...we've got nothing. More » -

Wide VGA OLED for Handhelds on the Horizon From Samsung
Samsung is currently hard at work on what should be the first OLED display capable of wide VGA (800x480) resolution on a screen that measures as little as 3.08 inches across. Quite a leap when you consider that up until now, the best manufacturers could muster was a quarter VGA (320x240) on displays of that size. The redesign should also produce screens that cover the entire NTSC color range, achieve a 1,000:1 contrast ratio, use less power, and produce nearly instantaneous pixel response times. The upgrade should be ready for production sometime in the summer of next year. [ Samsung via Electronista] -

Samsung Announce Pricing, Release Details for YP-P2, YP-T10 MP3 Players
Both the Samsung YP-P2 and YP-T10 MP3 players have been given pricing and release info. The P2 is Samsung's stab at the iPod Touch, with a big ol' touchscreen and a home-esque button. The 4GB version will run $199 and the 8GB version $249. The T10 is a more modest affair, more reminiscent of the old nanos. Its 4GB version will run $149 and the 8GB $199. Both models will drop here in the States sometime later this month. More » -

Samsung YP-S5 and YP-T10 Work Double as Cellphone Bluetooth Headsets
Samsung's putting itself back in the game with these YP-S5 and YP-T10 digital audio players. Joining the other DAP official at IFA, that YP-P2. Samsung's Future Phone Concepts to Mimic the K5
Design-wise, Samsung's K5 MP3 player is spot on, so it's no surprise the company's modeling its future cellphones on the stylish MP3 player. Recent Samsung patents show cellphones with sliding/slanting screens and cradles that let you "stand" your handheld for watching videos or making video calls. It's a simple design tweak, but one that would make today's media phones a bit more practical to use. More » -

Pandora Hits Sprint Phones and Sonos Remotes
Right at this moment, a bunch of music fans are sitting in rows at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art's Wattis Theater, eagerly awaiting the fate of Pandora, the cult-hit semi-customizable Internet radio service. What are they about to hear? That Pandora is teaming up with Sprint and Sonos to get into mobile and household gadgets, and is also introducing a new online interface for the free service. Why should you care? Mobile Net radio has been in the non-existent to sucky range, and a lot of people enjoy Pandora in Web form. At least until Slacker's many promises are realized, this is the biggest step in mobilizing Net radio to date. More » -

Samsung Developing Low Cost, Low Power HD Radio Chips
Samsung is tossing their hat into the ring of HD Radio with an announcement that they will be developing chipsets for this up-and-coming radio format. This is pretty significant because the chips being developed by Samsung are of the low-power and low-cost variety, therefore HD Radio may be able to tap a market that it has yet to grasp: portability. This expands the previous limitations of HD Radio and could allow for portable HD Radio receiver and even implementation into cellphones and other portable devices (Zune?). More » -

Samsung Expanding Their MP3 Line with GPS?
Looks like the boys at Samsung are the latest to jump into the GPS market with this little number that was recently discovered via the FCC. The device will come with Bluetooth (nothing out of the ordinary), but what we find interesting is the "YP" prefix given to the device's model numbers (which range from YP-N1BZB to YP-N1BQW). That prefix has usually referred to Samsung's Yepp line of MP3 players, meaning we could be looking at an extension of the line or a Yepp/GPS hybrid. More » -

Samsung Makes a Cell Phone Display You Can Still See in Direct Sunlight
One of my biggest cellphone pet peeves has been answered. Samsung has developed a display for smartphones and mobiles that automatically adjusts brightness depending on its surroundings. This means the 2.1-inch panel will look sharp regardless of whether you're in a dark room or out in direct sunlight. Samsung calls the new technology Automatic Brightness Adjustment. The QVGA display will also use 20&ndash30 percent less power than other screens its size. It's expected to hit production the second half of this year. More » -

Samsung's DivX-Playing F500 Caught On Video
Part of Samsung's Ultra collection of phones, the F500 is the only mobile out there that can playback DivX movies (along with MP4s, WMV, and AVI). To store your, er, video collection the phone has 400MB of built-in storage along with a microSD card slot. The screen is somewhat small (2.4-inches), but for those boring train/plane rides, it should do the trick. And that swiveling base/stand is a nice touch. More » -

Consumer Reports Convinces Us That the iPod Nano Isn't the Best
Consumer Reports ranked the 18 best flash-based MP3 player, and shockingly, the iPod nano isn't number one. Now, give me a second while I go cry and kiss my pictures of Steve Jobs in my Apple shrine. Okay, all better. They actually ranked the iRiver U10, Cowon iAudio U3 and the oldie, but goodie Samsung YP-T8 ahead of the iPod Nano based on audio quality, headphone quality and battery life. Reviewed: Samsung K3 Digital Audio Player (Verdict: Thin, Clutch Player)
While we're still waiting for the Samsung K3 digital audio player to hit our area, those wily Koreans have already reviewed it and it looks to be a hit. It has the same interface found in Samsung's other recent DAPs, like the K5. The K3's main draw is its size, boasting a thickness of only 6.95mm. It's important to note that, while thin, the iPod nano is thinner at 6.60mm. The K3 also has those love it or hate it touch sensitive buttons like the LG Chocolate. While I personally can't stand touch sensitive buttons (it's not a button if I can't push it), plenty of other folks do. Additionally, the player's small size does result in some drawbacks More » -

Is Hollywood Losing its Infatuation with the iPod?
There used to be a time when you'd see Apple's iPod in practically every new music video. Everyone from Snoop Dogg to 50 Cent could be seen flashing their shiny white player, much in the same manner that Paris Hilton whored herself out to the Sidekick. But lately it seems the iPod has been getting the shaft from Hollywood who has been caught holding hands with other players. Take for instance Fergie's "Fergalicious" video. As painful as it is to watch (seriously, don't Google it), she has the brains (or maybe her agent does) to carry a Samsung YP-K5. Then there's... More » -
