Toshiba Gigabeat V81: More Screen, More Memory, More of the Same
The new Toshiba's Gigabeat V81 portable digital TV has a 320 x 240-pixel 3.5-inch screen, fitting 40 hours of recorded TV into its internal 8GB memory, which is double the previous version, expandable with an SD card. They claim 10 hours of broadcast viewing, and 13 hours of playback video viewing with WMA, WMV and MP3 compatibility. Too bad the TV reception only works in Japan, where it will be out for $330 this month. [AV Watch and Akihabaranews] More » -

U27 Conical MP3 Player and Speakers Look Like a Warhead
The U27, with its neat military name, looks like something scary that Jack Bauer would defuse heroically while US citizens sweated in front of their tellies*. Luckily for us, it is not, or mass destruction of the world's population would be just an "Add To Basket" click away. The U27 is actually an MP3 player with built-in speakers that costs just $89.99. Considering that they throw in a Toshiba 1GB SD card at no extra cost, it's a bit of a bargain, really. [Deal Extreme via Shiny Shiny] More » -

Toshiba RD-A301 HD DVD Recorder with HDD
Last night I had a dream about soba noodles in which I explained the enjoyment of sitting at a noodle bar beside otherwise silent, hungry salarymen and slurping away in harmony. I explained that the experience would never be quite the same outside of Tokyo, much like how this new Toshiba Vardia RD-A301 is not yet available outside Japan. More » -

Toshiba's Sexy SD-P120DT Portable DVD Player Makes Us Forget There's a Format War On
Congrats to Toshiba for building a cooler standard-def DVD player than any HD DVD player it could ever dream up. The sweet black Speak-N-Spell-looking 12" 800x480 SD-P120DT has HDMI out with up-conversion up to 1080i, is compatible with DivX, MP3 and WMA files, and even takes SD, xD and Memory Stick flash cards. Too bad it looks like it's not in the US (yet?) and that it costs around $600. [Akihabara News] -

Prototype Toshiba Gigabeat Sports Dazzling Display
We had all but given up on exciting new PMPs before seeing this new Toshiba Gigabeat prototype. And while Akihabara News has technically labeled it a DAP (audio only), we're expecting that its gorgeous OLED 3.2" WQVGA screen will find a use for our movies and TV shows as well. Sure, the display isn't as large as Sony's 11-inch OLED product hitting markets soon, but we're fairly certain it's the largest OLED that can (sort of) fit in your pocket. More » -

Gettin' the Beat Off With the Toshiba Gigabeat U-Series
Toshiba's Gigabeat U-Series player is tiny—tinier than a Meizu, which is already pretty tiny. It holds 2 gigabytes of songs, has an FM Radio, comes with 30 days of free Yahoo Music and costs only $100. Not too shabby, eh? Check our gallery to see some close-up shots and how it stacks up with the competition. [Toshiba] More » -

Dell Promotes Laptops With Toshiba Destruction
Dell's new promotion of their Latitude XT tablet PC gets personal—claiming frustration with bad tablets, they sawed Toshiba's competingM400Portege 3500 in half. Toshiba Gigabeat U103 Ships in 24 Colors
The Toshiba Gigabeat U103 takes the idea of colorful digital media players to an unprecedented level, splashing on enough colors to populate a good-sized crayon box. The $114 player that's now available in Japan is now offered in 24 different colors, which is certainly some kind of record. Toshiba Gigabeat MET401 Wi-Fi Enters FCC
The FedComCom has the scoop on the latest Toshiba Gigabeat device, complete with Wi-Fi and Windows Embedded. There's not much art in the FCC filing, which makes us wonder if the MET401 could possibly be a future Zune device or just one of Toshiba's own media players. [FCC via Engadget] -

Toshiba's Qosmio Getting World's First 0.5-inch HD DVD-RW Drive
HD DVD fans are getting a double helping of good news this morning thanks to Toshiba. Their SD-L912A is not only the first HD DVD-RW drive for laptops, but measuring in at half an inch thick, it's also the slimmest. Sure, it's slow (1x read/write speeds) and faster drives are bound to follow, but for now it's the only option available. It'll be out this July. More » -

New Toshiba Gigabeat V Has Bigger Screen, 80s Portable TV Looks
I don't know if this is the future of Zune or not, but the Toshiba Gigabeat V has been updated with a bigger screen and hard drives than the previous generation: 4-inch 480 x 272 pixel screen and 1.8-inch 40 and 80GB drives. It will be out in Japan on the first of June but you will probably see it around here soon, either with its original badge or perhaps in a Zunefied incarnation (Although unlikely, as Zune v2 is supposedly going to be an in-house design). Whatever form it takes, it comes loaded, and like theoriginal ZuneToshiba Gigabeat, it's the size of a brick. More » -

Toshiba and Alpine Pimp Your Ride with HD DVD and Smart Touch Screen
I'm not sure why you'd want HD DVD in your car, but just in case, Toshiba and Alpine have created this car-friendly duo, which brings HD DVD straight to your dashboard. The player is accompanied by Toshiba's touchscreen, which has the brains to sense when your finger's shadow is hovering above the panel (that way you won't smudge or grease up your screen). The unit is expected to come out in 2008. More » -

Toshiba 200GB Portable Is About Capacity, Not Speed
There has been a ridiculous amount of news this past week about portable hard drives of the 2.5-inch variety. OWC introduced a 160GB 7200rpm portable. Toshiba Launches New Gigabeat: Possible Zune 'Nano' Prototype?
Remember when we learned that the Zune was a re-skinned Toshiba Gigabeat and when Toshiba filed the FCC docs for Microsoft? Kinda took the wind out of the first-generation Zune sales for a bit there, didn't it? Now that Toshiba's just released the P20K and P10K flash-based players (which also look a bit like the Nano), we have to wonder whether this will be the hardware the flash-based Zune will use. Some might call this fish-shaped MP3 and WMA player by Toshiba cute, though we call it just downright goofy. 2010: Apple's Flash Storage Odyssey
Back in September we mentioned that Apple was effectively screwing everyone out of the 4GB and 6GB flash player market because Samsung was offering a huge volume discount to the company (up to 50 percent for the nano). Now it's been announced that Apple reached a long-term agreement with Hynix, Intel, Micron, Samsung Electronics and Toshiba to secure the supply of NAND flash memory through 2010, truly sealing the deal. And just to make sure it's signed, sealed and delivered, Jobs is planning to prepay a total of $1.25 billion for flash memory components over the next three months. Happy Holidays, everyone!
