ZVUE 260 Plays Portable Video For The Thrifty

zvue260.jpgDespite bearing a slight resemblance to the iPod, the ZVUE 260 is more of a low-end player than the $249 Apple flagship. Priced at less than $100, the ZVUE 260 depends only on external SD memory cards, which means you're only getting a few gigs on this at most.

Despite the lack of storage, the ZVUE does play back video at 30fps on a QVGA display, plus supports WMA-DRM tracks. There's no real reason to purchase this player over, say, another relatively no-name MP3 player, but the combination of WRM-DRM and video playback at under $100 may be just right for some of you out there when it launches mid-2007.

  • For another $100 you can have a refurbished 30GB iPod Video.

With SD cards going for as little as ten bucks per gig these days, these SD MP3 players make quite a bit of financial sense. We picked up a jWin SD MP3 player for twenty bucks, added a GB card for another twenty, and had a nano-sized MP3 player for dirt cheap.

$100 for a player that can do video functions that you add an SD card to? It may not be quite as financially savvy as the $20 jWin, but it makes sense to me if you are planning on watching your occasional SnapStream BeyondTV / Sage television show. It is still nearly a third the price of an iPod Video and may be a reasonable trade-off for not having 30 gigs at your disposal.

That said, I am a complete tight-wad, so ideas like this make sense to someone who refuses to pay $10 per month to ComCast for a DVR.

  • Plus, it's got three of the letters of "Zune" in the name! Does that mean it's 75% of the Microsoft product?

Zvue? Are they serious? Do they want to be sued by Microsoft or something?

Especially when viewed in all capitals (ZVUE), my first read was Zune.

  • i had the older model before first gen ipods came out

it works good but it swallowed batteries whole, like 4 batteries at a time with 2 or three hours video time at most. but it was one of the few portable video players of its time

plus it came with a 128mb sd card which was a steal about 4 years ago when i got it

not a bad deal for a kid, but ill still prefer my 2 year old lyra 2780 until i can get a cheap arcos

  • I thought it said zune 360...
