LG Making iPhone Competitor, Android Phone and Prada III

The image associated with this post is best viewed using a browser. It would be amazing if LG could make an iPhone competitor, an Android device and a Prada III that's one single device, but somehow I don't think that's what LG's president means.

In an interview for a Korean news agency, Ahn Seung-kwon says (besides the details above) that LG will make another luxury phone (unrelated to the Prada) that will be similar to Nokia's crazy overpriced Vertu. He also said that they aim to be the number two cellphone maker in the world by 2012. The current #2? Samsung. So it's like Predator vs. Aliens, except instead of Predator and Aliens, you have a bunch of Koreans.
Prada Transformer Is Four Buildings In One, Thanks to Massive Cranes

The Prada Transformer is a huge four-sided open-air building whose floor can be any one of its radically different sides. Massive cranes rotate it into place, leaving the other three to compose its ever-changing ceiling.

This isn't some neat concept, it's an actual construction, penned by Rem Koolhaas and the Office for Metropolitan Architecture, and built by Prada with help from LG and Hyundai Motor. It's framed out of steel and covered entirely with a "smooth elastic membrane" and it will be situated in Seoul, Korea, where it will be used for concerts, fashion shows and other cultural events.

I think the best illustration of it is this piece from Freshness Mag, when the Transformer was only in the planning stage:

As you can see, the hexagonal side is flat, and the square has some bleachers, so it works for "cinema" mode. The circular side has a giant cylindrical platform in the middle of it, which houses a projector when it's in the air for cinema mode, but then is used as a performance stage when it's flat on the ground in "special event" mode.

Shot from the air and as yet unpainted, it doesn't look like much, and reminds me less of the robotic Transformers of the 1980s than it does of the Dungeons & Dragons dice from roughly the same epoch. The question is, how in hell do you make sure that the thing is on level ground? And while we're talking, who has to hose all the mud off of it when it gets rotated to a new position? And most importantly, who gets to drive the crane? Ooh ooh, me me! [Dezeen]

Prada II Phone Comes With a Swanky Little Bluetooth Watch

Apparently it was optimistic to expect Prada to understand the difference between a fashion accessory and a phone accessory, because now look what's happened: Prada and LG have announced the Prada Link, a Bluetooth watch that pulls text messages and your call information from the Prada II phone. To be honest though, it doesn't look so bad. The stylish Link has a tiny little OLED screen that displays the content of text messages, call history data, a call rejection option and, of course, the time. The only downsides are the 48-hour battery life, which leaves you latching your watch to the phone for charging every couple days, and the lack of a US release date. It's not yet clear if the watch will come with the phone for free, but considering that similar watches have retailed for around $400, I'd guess not.
LG Prada II Officially Decent, Expensive and Faaaabulous

LG and Prada have just sent out a pre-announcement for the upcoming Prada II, sequel to the companies' first touchscreen lovechild that was released well over a year ago. Stand-out features include a 5MP camera, FM radio, 7.2Mbps HSDPA 850/2100 (hey, North American importers) and Wi-Fi. The rest of the tech specifications pretty much match the leaked list, but offer little to distinguish the phone from the growing crowd of pop-out QWERTY touchscreen phones.

In fact, the omission of GPS and decision to stick with the decent but none-too-powerful LG/Prada OS make the €600 asking price sound slightly goofy. That said, if you're tired of sacrificing QWERTYness for prettiness, well, here you go. It should be available "before the end of the year" but it'll be Europe only, at least at first. [LG via UnwiredView]

LG Prada II Full Specs Leak Online

The last we heard of the upgrade to LG's Prada phone, the Prada II, was a grainy photo and some speculative specifications. Now over at Boy Genius Report they've been given a run-down on the full specs of the phone from a source they trust. The rumored 5-megapixel camera is indeed there, with flash and VGA video capability. 850MHz/2100MHz HSDPA's there too, as is the 3-inch screen. Read on for more.

• Quad-band GSM/EDGE, dual-band HSDPA (850MHz/2100MHz)
• 950mAh battery
• 240×400 3.0-inch screen
• 5 megapixel autofocus camera with flash and VGA recording
• Bluetooth 2.1
• Wi-Fi b,g
• Infineon MP-EH + M180 chipset
• Motion sensor
• FM Radio
• 104.5 x 54 x 16.8 mm

Not bad at all: with quad-band, WCDMA, the motion sensor and FM radio it sounds like a fully-rounded handset. [BGR]

Samsung D980 Dual-SIM Touchscreen Phone Hits Intertubes

Samsung has kept developing its LG Prada knock-off F480 full-touchscreen phone and turned it into the D980. This is a dual-SIM version of the phone, hitting China first in a D988 version and then apparently the rest of the world as the D980 DuoS. It's a tri-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE device, with 2.6-inch QVGA screen and 5-megapixel auto-focus cam with a flash. There's no pricing or timing info yet, but since Blam had some bad things to say about the F480 cellphone back in February, let's hope they've improved the touchscreen too.
LG Prada II Cellphone Details Leaked

According to a leaked specifications list, LG has a Prada II handset in the works, and it sounds like it will be packing quite a punch. The details that have been leaked suggest the cellphone will have a 3-inch (400x240) WQVGA touchscreen, 5MP camera, front mounted camera for video calling, Wi-Fi connectivity, 7.2 Mbps HSDPA, USB 2.0, Full HTML browser, FM radio, TV-out, microSDHC support and—we just can't believe it until we see it— a full, slide-out QWERTY keyboard.

LG will be working on all the decent phone features, while Prada will be putting together crap themes, annoying ringtones and other stuff to ensure the handset is just a little rubbish. The LG Prada successor is expected to launch in Q4, 2008. We're excited.
The chaps at Phone Arena have managed to gain some leaked press shots of AT&T's LG Vu, and it is looking tastier than before. The Vu will come in two primary versions; the CU915 will lack a mobile TV antenna, whilst the CU920 will be supplied with mobile TV antenna, which will support AT&T's new, streaming TV service. Checkout the gallery for some more great shots, then jump for the specs.

The features the handsets will share include a 3-inch WQVGA 262K color touchscreen, 2MP camera with autofocus, HTML web browser, HSDPA connectivity, 120MB internal memory, USB mass storage mode, and up to 4GB microSD card support. Standing in at 4.25"H x 2.16"W x 0.51"D, the LG Vu is slightly on the larger side, but we can look past its inherent big bones to the 1000mAh battery, which will supply up to 3-hours of talk time. The Vu is set to go on show at CTIA, which gets underway on April 1st, or is that whole event just a well planned joke? Oh, we just can't tell. Now, hit up the link to get your eyeballs filled to the brim with Vu goodness [Phone Arena]

Verizon's getting its own version of the AT&T Vu, a touchscreen LG Prada phone without the Prada branding. Phone Arena says the specs on this look something like a 3.2-megapixel camera with a Schneider Kreuznach lens, microUSB port, microSDHC slot, touchscreen, and a full QWERTY keyboard. It's also supposed to be headed for release at the end of March, but could be delayed until April or May. This phone is apparently so secret that Phone Arena needs not one, but two watermarks on the picture. Well, a silver version is now available in Europe, complete with new UI (also silver, apparently) and matching silver accessories. It's available in most of Europe, but don't expect to see it Stateside anytime soon. A couple more pics after the jump.

RCR Wireless News claims AT&T will launch their own mobile TV service as early as February 5, and the 3G, touchscreen LG Vu (better known as the LG Prada) will be the first phone to support the service. The service will use the same Qualcomm MediaFLO backbone as the Verizon V Cast TV video service, which currently offers eight live broadcast channels. However, the AT&T service will have two exclusive channels (Verizon currently has no exclusives). The Vu is expected to sell for $200.

This isn't spectacular news unless you're the Silver Surfer or the silver-haired fox our intern was chatting up last week, but the LG Prada phone is coming in silver all across Europe some time later this year. So if colour was the reason why you've been holding out on getting one of these fashion phones, well, there ya go.
TAG Heuer Set to Develop Luxury Cellphone Line: Does Tiger Woods Need More Money?

According to the folks at Electronista, fancy-pants watchmaker TAG Heuer will team up with the French designers at Modelabs to develop a new line of luxury cellphones. The news follows closely on the heels of other fashion icons like Armani and Prada entering the phone biz, but there is no word yet on how the Tag Heuer phone would compare to those offerings in terms of specifications.

As for the design, the cellphones are expected to be as as "contemporary," "technological" and "timeless" as their watches. Naturally, there is no word yet on any type of advertising campaign, but my guess is that somehow Tiger Woods will find a way to make even more money whoring it out to the masses.
Sexy LG KS20 Now Shipping (At Least For Some)

Europeans get lucky this week, as the Prada successor LG KS20 hits stores in France, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands and Italy. (What up, UK?) The final specs on this baby are in, and they make us terribly jealous.

It's got 3.6Mbps HSDPA and Wi-Fi B and G, and what looks like a half-way decent web browser. There will be some built-in games and video on demand, video telephony, and a media player that will read MP3, MPEG4, WAV, 3GP, AMR-NB, WMA, AAC, AAC+ and eAAC+. We don't even mind the Windows Mobile 6 part, given the fact that there's a customized interface like the T-Mobile HTC Shadow or the Sprint's HTC Touch.

I suppose the upcoming entry of Verizon's LG Voyager to the US doesn't preclude us from getting a KS20, but the powers that be might not want the competition this early, and LG's relationships with other carriers are not as cuddly. Our source tells us that it's very light, but comes with an antenna (!) that's easy to snap off. It's supposedly 3G, but took a long while to load up Gizmodo (probably because of our huge images). It's got zooming like the iPhone when browsing, but takes a couple steps instead of the iPhone's one. Check out the non-fuzzy pics in our gallery after the jump.

Scott Moritz of The Street says he just confirmed that Verizon will release a version of LG's phone here in the States. Whether that will be Prada or something slightly different, he's not sure.

According to what we heard from LG, they claim the KE850 (Prada) will not come to the States in its current form, and whatever does will not actually be called the Prada. However, we do know that Prada-ish phones like the LG KS20 are already coming out, but we're not sure if this is the weapon Verizon will be using to counter AT&T. – Jason Chen

Settling this iPhone vs. LG Prada Nonsense

Another one of those "iPhone-Killers" every phone company is pushing. But I just got an LG Prada, and based on my hands on time with that and my session with the iPhone back at Macworld (not the papercraft in the photo), I can say it's a great phone, but it's also no contest.

iPhone wins. Here's why:

The LG is smaller, sure. It's a better size, for an un-smartphone.It's the nicest LG I've ever seen. But it often uses it's touchscreen to boring effect. There is no interface advantage here. You touch buttons on screen to scroll and click around, much like a Palm or WM6 Phone. The menu design itself is similar to that on any high end LG phone, like, say the Shine. The 3-inch diagonal comes in useful as the entirety of it becomes a viewfinder in camera mode. The touchscreen let's you drag the home screen's clock around, and that fishy in the photo above is actually "touchable". And it ships with some touchscreen games. But generally speaking, it operates just like a regular phone. No revolutionary usage models here, either.

The iPhone uses it's touchscreen to zoom photos and webpages, flick scroll through long lists. iPhone has all the iTunes and data syncing integration built in, and the neato factor of coverflow. iPhone has networked widget compatibility for weather, stocks (yawn), and who knows what else is coming down the line. The Prada's sync software is rudimentary, allowing you to transfer contacts and calendar appointments. The Prada does have 3G, although that may be in Europe only flavors, while the iPhone only has EDGE and WiFi. (Since this is an import phone for the foreseeable future, it's likely.) The LG's 3-inch screen is 240 x 400. The Apple's is 3.5 inches, at 320 x 480. 8GB vs whatever you can fit into the LG's few megs of internal mem, plus the microSD slot. The browser sucks on the LG phone. LG phone has the advantage of being able to run J2ME progs. And has SMS and IM, which IMO are very obvious things that the iPhone should have. (Firmware!)

The Prada would be a good phone, the nicest non-business user touchscreen phone, I can think of at the moment. But at $700-850 bucks, it's just way too expensive. The iPhone isn't perfect, but the amount of innovation it has pushes it into another class. This is a really stupid comparison: iPhone wins. (The better comparison is iPhone to Helio Ocean of N95. – Brian Lam

LG Prada Free With Contract In Europe, Available Now

The LG Prada is out in Europe and, beyond being a good excuse to post a Laura Ocaña photo once again, the news is that it's free.

Yes, free with a $69/month (which includes 500 voice minutes and 500 text messages) year-and-a-half contract, but free. As opposed to the not-free iPhone's $499 and $599 plus Cingular two-year contract. And sure, the iPhone does a lot more than the Prada, but for most people, it will be the "it's cool, it has a touch-screen, it plays music, it has a camera, it's FREE, who cares!" phone.

Carphone Warehouse released it in the UK this saturday and, according to Peregrine Riviere, Investor Relations Director for the company: "They are selling like hot cakes". I bet it helps that the official price for this cellphone is $802 (600 euros), available unlocked in Prada shops through the Old Continent. –Jesus Diaz

LG KS20: Pradaless, Prada Update?

This is the KS20, a rumored update to the LG KE850, or Prada phone, as known by many. It will have the Prada brand name dropped. It is pretty similar to the KE850, but with a little more beef. It is said to run off Windows Mobile 6 Pro and includes 128MB of memory, a 2.8-inch touchscreen, GRPS/EDGE/UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA support, 2.0-megapixel camera, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, TV-out, FM radio and microSD support. Not bad, and maybe because it lacks the Prada brand name the price tag will be a bit better. In it, the captions tell us that it's sexy, comes with a Prada case, and a "luxury" screen cloth to wipe off facial secretions. Also, the large touchscreen is a "peach", and the music playback looks great as well.

LG Prada Review: A Trendy Phone for Designer Whores

The girls at ShinyShiny got some one-on-one time with the much-hyped LG Prada phone and after spending 24 hours with a preproduction model had some mixed, but mostly good things to say. So the good news first. The touch-screen has no lag whatsoever. Even better, fat-fingered technofiles don't have to worry about accidentally hitting the wrong "button" since the phone's icons are spaced far apart. The bad news is that the touch-screen requires some getting used to. For texting, it requires concentrating, otherwise you'll end up with a ton of misspellings. There were also times when you had to "press" buttons more than once to get them to function. Final verdict:
"This is a phone. And it's really nothing more than a phone. It's for those that are all about appearances. And there's nothing wrong with that."

LG Prada Is No iPhone But It's A Must - Or So They Say

While being held by Laura Ocaña gave it semi-divine status at the 3GSM show, apparently the LG KE850 Prada is "just a phone". Although not any phone, according to the Trusted Reviews' hands-on. It's a "stylish, sexy, well thought out, well featured phone..." but it's not an iPhone, it doesn't have smartphone capabilities and there's no QWERTY screen keyboard. Plenty more, including its - surprisingly low - price and more pics, after the jump.

The "only thing" that it shares with the iPhone is a gorgeous screen (not judging from the photos, though), lack of 3G support, 2 megapixel camera, multimedia player, games and the same kind of sliding unlock on-screen bar. So, umm, I guess it is like the iPhone but without all the things most people are really never going to use. Except Apple fanboys like me, that is.

Still, at 2,99 oz. and 0,47 inches thin, the Prada seems to be The-Must-Have-If-You-Want-To-Be-Cool-Although-It's-Not-an-iPhone Phone™ of the year. Until you realize that, at $60 with a 200-minute contract in Europe, everyone will have one. Personally, I don't care: Laura played with one and that's enough for me. And yes, I guess I'm that sad. – Jesus Diaz

LG Already Updates Shine: Looks The Same, But Adds HSDPA and VGA Camera

LG is already hard at work making the next version of the , the KU970. While the exterior will remain as Shiney as ever, LG adds 3G HSDPA and a VGA camera. LG has also bumped the internal storage capacity to 512MB. Other than that, it's the same Shine that we still don't have here. At this point, I'd rather LG just skip over the Shine and send us some Prada love.
Nalu Cellphone Concept: When Multiple Interfaces Attack

(Since no one has figured that out yet, I suppose.) It combines a phone, media player and text input (for e-mail and text messages), each with their own distinctive interface... which is exactly the problem.

Why would I want to fold out this big adult diaper looking thing on the street? How is that any easier or more intuitive than fidgeting with T9 or one of those phones with a flip out keyboard, like the Sidekick or LG enV? I'll concede that it looks nice when closed (and we could use more gray-colored electronics for a change... not everything has to be black), but otherwise it looks too cumbersome to use on-the-go. Maybe if you sit at a desk all day it could work, but I live a very active life; I can't be expected to be near a coffee table all day where I can set this thing down upon. – Nicholas Deleon

It's day 4 here at 3GSM and the LG booth is once again packed with beautiful people and geeks alike. Everyone clamming to get some one-on-one time with the LG Prada lovechild. But today we come to you with some dirt on the LG Prada guardian, she's none other than Miss Barcelona 2003 semi-finalist, Laura Ocano Fernandez. If you'd like to see who beat Fernandez to the 2003 title, hit the jump. But in my eyes, Fernandez is the true winner cause she gets the highly-coveted responsibility of keeping the LG Prada's beautiful screen from being smudged up by the chubby digits of geeky tech journalists like myself. Gizmodo ES has even named her Miss Gizmodo and has more pics of her lovely hands here.

Wait, does the LG Prada run Windows Mobile 6? Even though these pictures say yes, there's no identifying "Prada" markings on it. So we asked LG and Prada themselves.

What did they say? They said The LG Prada phone has never, and will never run Windows Mobile 6. It runs a proprietary OS made by both LG and Prada. Who knew Prada had software engineers?
Shots of The LG Prada (?) Running Windows Mobile 6

We told you so. Here are actual shots of the LG Prada phone running Windows Mobile 6... though is that really the Prada phone?

While it looks exactly like the phone of the moment, it doesn't appear to carry any identifying remarks, Prada logos, etc. Rumblings point to LG developing two different, near identical looking touchscreen phones: the Prada that we all know and love and a phone optimized for Windows Mobile 6. LG's Head of Mobile Handset R&D, Mr. Woo-Young Kwak, had this to say when the press uttered the painful phrase one too many times:

We consider that Apple copycat Prada phone after the design was unveiled when it was presented in the iF Design Award and won the prize in September 2006.

Let's just say they were both developed at around the same time and neither of them took significant design details from the other, shall we? – Jason Chen

There was only one LG Prada phone to be had at the LG booth at 3GSM and the only person lucky enough to cop a feel was the LG Prada model, who insisted press only take pictures of her with the phone. Nevertheless, I did get some hands-on time with the phone and though I normally hate fashion phones, I thought this one is pretty cool.

The interface is really easy to use—it's quick and responsive, but the screen picks up smudges way too fast. In fact, the model kept swiping it down every minute or so. The phone's also pretty lightweight, though not in a cheap way. One thing that struck me was that unlike the iPhone, the LG Prada lacks a bit of color. The reason? Well, according to LG, they deliberately made color minimal cause the monochrome interface complements the "Prada experience."

So what's the conclusion? This is definitely a worthy competitor to the iPhone that we should keep our eye on.

Future LG Phones To Run Windows Mobile 6, Prada Included?

Microsoft and LG agreed to a deal that will put Windows Mobile 6, aka Crossbow, onto future LG smartphones. Could this include the upcoming LG Prada phone? Well, considering that we've already seen the Prada's UI in action (narrated by Super Mario himself), maybe not, but the BusinessWeek says that WiMo6 will power LG phones that use touch screens. More info will on this marriage will surface at the 3GSM conference next week. Like we said before, Prada could kill some time before Apple's wunderphone comes out in June. – Nicholas Deleon

Ever since it was first announced, we've been kinda curious about LG's iPhone competitor, especially after sizing it up to the competition and seeing those pics of the user interface. Well, now you can take a full look at the UI thanks to the folks at Cellulare IT magazine who got some one-on-one time with LG's baby. I gotta admit, the UI looks pretty snazzy and easy to use, though I wish it were a tad bit faster. The phone is coming out this spring in Europe for about $500. Sadly, there's no word on a U.S. release, though we can always hope. – Louis Ramirez

LG's Prada Phone Soon Out, Could Be Your iPhone Placeholder Til June

Maybe this is their way of sticking it to Apple, but LG today officially announced its new Prada phone, also know as the KE850. Aside from the fact that it's black and has a touchscreen, the similarities with the iPhone are minimal...not really. The LG has a 3-inch 400 x 240 screen to the iPhone's 3.5-inch 480 x 320 screen. Unlike the iPhone, LG's phone lacks built-in storage, instead you'll have to rely on microSD cards. There's also no word of its wifi capabilities, if it has any. Still, it looks nicer than many of the other fashion phones we've seen before and the interface, though perhaps slow, ain't bad either. Where it does have the advantage is availability. It's due out next month in Europe, whereas the iPhone still has a ways to go. – Louis Ramirez
