Gawker Video Prank, Plus Challenge

Most of you have heard of the Mosquito Ringtone, or Teen Buzz, by now. Originally developed as a security device to keep those pesky kids away from your shops, this high frequency pitch was quickly hijacked by terrorist youth who used the weapon for their own text-messaging-during-class gain.

Then Gawker's own video producer, Richard Blakeley, got his hands on the ringer. And he had A Plan. At Gawker headquarters in NY, he would blast the ringer and torture the writers into unconscious pain. Meanwhile, for the sake of Gizmodians everywhere, he would tape the experience.

The results after the jump.

Nothing happened.

This from Blakeley himself:

ok, so i waited until all the music was off and there were only about 9 people in the office, i threw up the sound on my computer full blast, it was REALLY loud. for 5 minutes NOBODY said/did anything, meanwhile my ears were KILLING me... then it hit me, i am the only person under 30 in this office...i couldn't take it anymore. so i turned it off.
Can you do a better job at torturing the masses? Blakeley hopes that you will. So get off the couch and make us some videos! Please. Then email them to markATgizmodoDOTcom. The prize will include getting immortalized in a post...and possibly a lawsuit (that we are not responsible for) if you damage anyone's hearing.

  • im 15 and i didnt hear the buzz, i have heard it before and can hear it through the links but i cant hear it on the vid

  • I just made this my ringtone. I'm 22, and I can hear it perfectly over all kinds of other music/noise (I just tested it.) This is awesome, and now I don't have to keep turning my phone to vibrate.

I can only notice it for a second or two and then it just seems to blend in.

You can't hear the buzz on the video...maybe due to YouTube compression.

    Doh.

Too old at 40 I guess.
Of course it doesn't help that I sang in rock bands for a couple few years...

  • @Mark Wilson: yeah, mark, its really weird, i can hear all the sine waves on the link but no the video

  • Yippee. I can hear it (I am over 30 also, and can still hear the high pitch buzz of some CRTs).

Now to set it as the ringtone for my bit on the side. :D

  • Wow, I've never heard it before and I'm almost 40. That would drive me insane! My whole life I've been able to tell when someone turns on a TV because the tube or whatever gives off a similar sound but not as intense.

  • Well, I can hear it quite clearly. Ouch!!!

And I'm 43. Though I look a heck of lot younger.

I suppose that it helps that I did my best to protect my hearing at very loud concerts and clubs.

  • I'm 50. Downloaded it and hear it clear as can be. Maybe my Harman/Kardon speakers help...

Played in a rock band in high school and college but wore earplugs most the time.

No drugs, cigarettes, or alcohol either.

    Go figure.

  • I watched the video 5 times to try to figure out what was going on (nothing, obviously now that I actually read the article). No buzz on video but I can definitely hear the buzz on those sites.

  • 35 in a few days and I've always listened to loud music and gone to loud night clubs.

I can hear it, but like one commenter said, it seems to fade into the noise after a few moments. Although the background noise in general then becomes this annoying headache inducing kind of thing.

Oh, and I'm sure the video compression causes it to be lost.

  • 36 and I heard it. I still hear tube tvs too. I suspect that it might be the damage in my ears that lets me hear very quiet, high-pitched things. Anything that is slightly off from the ringing I normally have leaps out at me.

  • Hahaha is that scott talking in the background?!

  • i m 17 and i can hear it clearly, and it's not that annoying.

  • Btw, in my country everyone has it for a longtime on theyre cell's. even worse than that, things much worse[i have one on my computer i think, i will upload and post here].

  • I'm 18, I can hear it, and it does affect my mind.
Gets me a bit high ...:O
I actually enjoy hearing it ...
    My Cat Hates it!
Its awesome, my head just slumps after it finishes...and this is with it full on!!!
I can hear it...but if 50 year olds can't its aweosome..

  • Well I'm well over 30 and that sound KILLED my ears! Ouch. I just about put my finger through the mouse button trying to close out of that webpage - I couldn't close it fast enough.

Man, I can still feel the pain from that.

I don't know how people can't hear that.

  • who the f**k would do it just for the sake of torturing other people?

  • Mosquito and mice repellant devices use these high pitch sounds too. Ive had some serious headaches from these things!!!Tube tv's and crt monitors give it off to and our natural gas meter too ive noticed. The most annoying thing is trying to locate the sound to shut the thing off!!!

  • Ahh I hate the sound TV's create.

  • this explains the crappy writing of gawker blogs, inc. :p

  • I'm surprised the phones are capable of producing that noise. I always thought it was an urban legend that "the kids" were using these noises.

Also, I'm pretty sure age has less to do with it than does natural hearing acuity combined with damage done over the years.

  • @Dragoon: me!!! me!!!I can finaly torture these f*cking loud kids in the subway!!!Victory shall be mine!!(or shall not...i hear it too:( ) oh n i'm faaar from being 30!

  • I can't believe I intentionally watched a video of nothing. Twice.

It's like that painting of the polar bear in a snowstorm.

  • I'm 35 and I hear it clear as a bell, but it's not that annoying. It hurts a little at first, but then sounds like a TV tube. My friend is 33 and he finds it torturous.

  • 45 and it was like having a dentist's drill in my ear.

Now if only other things still worked like when I was 18.

  • Every night. EVERY FREAKIN' NIGHT.
When there is no other sound, my ears "sense" air motion and basically to me it sounds like that. Doctors tell me to have ambient noise so as not to "sense the air."

  • OMG that was deffining and I agree I got a little light headed. Hmm Im over 40 and did everything your told not to do. That sound is not something I want to hear lol I also hear old crt tubes.

  • I can hear the piercing scream, yes thank you. Bloody horrible noise. Im surprised I can hear it after years of ipod wreaking havoc on the eardrums.

  • Yup, I can hear it. Same with TV tubes as well.

Although, years of playing in crappy coverbands have hurt my ability to hear really low noises.

  • One possible explanation for so many older individuals hearing it could be that the Mosquito ringtone was created as a 14.4khz continuous tone and not a 17khz modulated tone as emitted by the original security device. Then again, I guess the premise is that we shouldn't hear the ringtone either.

As a kid, I always thought I had some sort of super powers as I could hear high pitched sounds... CRTs for one. I'd impress my grandmama with my "powers" when visiting and casually point out the TV was on two rooms away. Those were the days, the simple life :)

I'll hit 35 next month and have been listening to loud music full blast basically forever. I can definitely hear that noise and when I cranked up my speakers up a bit it gave me a vicious headache in under 5 seconds. My head is still buzzing 15 minutes on.

  • ugh, i hear it. I also hear tv tubes, among other things. I can actually hear lamps. it bugs the hell outta me, I can tell if anything using electricity is on in the room with my eye closed. I get no piece, needless to say.

  • i was wondering why there was nothing on the video. and yeah, that noise is annoying as hell.

  • At 53, it's nice to find out that SOME things still work like they did 30+ years ago.....

  • Is this just a ploy to have everyone reveal their ages? Now and forever 21.

  • Yeah i've downloaded the "ringtone" from a couple sites and i can hear it clear as day from the three versions i found. Im 31 btw. But from this video i can't hear a thing. I put all the sound files in audacity to do a comparison and the video just doesn't contain the frequency that the sound files do. Just white noise from the background.

  • careful guys i just blew out 2 tweeters on my speakers....... some polk audio r30's i was trying to see if it could be painful

  • HeatherNumber1, I don't know if that's the case, but I'll chime in too. :) I'm 31 and can hear the sounds on the links, but not on the video. Then again, after reading the comments, I don't think anybody could hear the sound on the video.

  • I'm 67 and I hear it!

Actually, I don't even know what you kids are talking about...

  • I'm running studio monitors and I could definitely hear it in the links and I'm 30. In fact, it's still ringing in my ears 10 minutes later. Like some of you I can hear the sound of CRTs and tube TVs. In HS I use to bet friends out in the hall if we were watching a video that day or not....easy money.

  • The big question is, can they record all rap music using this process? If Eminem's next album can be done using this system so most under 30 can only hear it, then mandatory legislation from the nations lawmakers can't be far away.

Also I'd like to request every spoken word by Pauly Shore be digitally remastered in those frequencies before public broadcast.

  • my sleeping gf can't hear it, but the cat sure can.

  • The sound makes me drowsy. I will use that fall asleep to from now on.

  • my math teacher must be bordering sixty, and HE can hear it.

    damn.

although it is quite funny to hear everyone to tell the perp to "shut it up!" and see the teacher's eyebrows go up because she doesn't know why we're telling him to shut up.

  • i,m 107 and have been decomposeing for several years but I can hear it quite plainly on one of those links. I drink , smoke and shag anything with a pulse too , go figure

  • @fastmike:

    HAHAHAHA yeahhh finally some humor!

  • I am 33, but I can hear the sound very clearly with the download. Within the video, it just sounds like part of the ambient sounds of running computers and such, but I would probably have scowled at you if I had been there to hear it in person.

Sound pollution is one reason I have grown to appreciate LCDs over CRTs: CRTs can be very annoying to those of us who can hear their constant whines. Some LCD sets have whiny projector bulbs too, though.

I am 25, I'm in that video, and I heard it eventually. Richard is a liar.

  • i heard the sound and i am 44.

    it's crap-a-riffic.

  • Whoa, pretty amazing, I guess. I played it in my living room, just to see what happens. My 11 year old son started freaking out. He hates it and now he's hamming it up and writhing around like it's killing him. My wife (37) can hear it, too. I have bad hearing, anyway, so at 38, i can't hear it.

I have Bible Study at the house tonight with a variety of ages (about 10 people), and can't wait to try it out!

On reflection, I guess that this is just like a hearing test, and people with good hearing can hear it. I knew I shoulda listened to my mom about listening to all that loud music in my truck when I was a teenager. Darn.

  • Yes, I can do a better job at torturing the masses. Put up little LED's that resemble mooninites all over boston. When do I see myself immortilized in a post now?

  • i either just blew out my Onkyo speakers or went tone deaf from the time I started that noise till I closed windows media player...
