AMD To Make Tri-Core Processors

AMD, in a move to differentiate their processor line, has decided to begin selling three core processors. Is it weird? A little. But customers will see speed boosts. And, as the Inquirer points out, the tri-core could allow AMD to salvage bad quad-core chips while offering consumers a wide range of models at various pricepoints.

AMD also went on record with the statement, "Seriously, who doesn't want a threesome? You never hear people asking for a foursome. It's the threesome that's all the rage." OK, they may not have actually said that. [theinquirer]

  • It's like Dr. House
"I'm only into foursomes now. 'Cause if one people back out, you're still having a threesome. If two people back out, you're still having sex and if three people back out, well... You can still have sex, only it isn't going to be as fun"

  • Wow i would've loved seeing the AMD President say that.
Truely you could get more out of a tri-core processor than out of a quad core processor.
If each core was calculated to 1ghz then you'd have just about 15-20 processes to each processor and somewhere around 25-30 each when in its in use (as 100%). I say good. Windows uses 25 default processes plus the regular 10-15 you get out of your programs that are running.
So i say go for it. Quad core is smaller more energy efficient but i doubt intel will release a 4ghz processor to regular computer users. Maybe to the gamers or the people who'll pay for it.

  • As long as bigger is better computers will keep expanding, getting faster.
I envision my kids remembering a 4 ghz as an ancient system. I remember when I bought a 300 mhz hp for $1200. That was the latest and greatest.

  • The AMD chief gives a pretty decent interview in the most recent Newsweek.

  • That threesome bit would have been a good marketing campaign. lol.

That would really appeal to the hard core gamer market comprised of mostly men.

AMD should be thanking you guys.

  • Oh yeah...I can see the various forum posts & geek-sites headlines into the future now:
