This super-cool project by some dude takes an old newspaper box and hooks up a 17-inch monitor to it so he can get digital headlines every day. Inside the box he stores the monitor, a Mac mini, and speakers/subwoofer for some audio as well. Using AppleScript, he fetches the front-page news of various other newspapers from Newseum so he can get a quick view of what's going on every morning.
See it in glorious video after the jump.

touchscreen for coverflow-like scrolling would make this twice as cool as it is, bringing it up to "almost cool".
that is...the coolest F'ing thing ever. I'd take that over an iPhone any day
Seems like overkill. Just get the paper delivered.
@discounteggroll: It really isn't.
would be cool to see these on the streets. But then again they would be torn apart and tagged and pissed on like the ones i pass on market street every day. *sighs*
I'm getting to hate you people... I see a great, cool looking gadget, read the writeup, read your comments, and BAM! I realize that it just has no useful application. Maybe in my library? Why? We already have over 100 public PCs. Oh well. Awsome custom job anyway.
It's a cool idea that seems almost there. Let's say you see an interesting headline and you want to read more, then what? Add a remote control and a projector to display the paper on the wall behind it and you've got something.
This will make it a lot harder for the homeless to steal all the newspapers and resell them on the street.
On the other hand, homeless hackers will have a field day.
Yeah, but a newspaper is usually yesterday's news, right? I don't know about his source material, but to "newspaperify" CNN or Reuters internet feed would be better in my opinion.
Yeah but, can you play D00M on it?
Yeah, but will it display the local penny saver? Yeah uh huh, what a piece of shit..lol No seriously though, one of the most innovative things i have seen in quite some time.
instead of the homeless selling the newspapers I think they will be offering a nice 17" monitor instead.
Now if the newspaper publishers would implement this, they could add Bluetooth payment to allow customers to download a copy to their handheld device.
It's a goddamn mod and it's apple based, for a change. Welcome to the world of modding. Nice custom job. The rest of youse naysayers ... get a culture. This is a clever conceit. One world and all that crap ....
i agree with dave. its innovative, useless maybe, but cool nonetheless. lets just give the guy who put the time in to make this a high five.
This is pretty slick...but you have to admit, it's very impractical.
I've never heard of newseum but at my school's library we use a site called PressDisplay.com (http://pressdisplay.com).
It's pretty much the same concept...100s of newspapers from around the world and you can see all the thumbnails for the front pages, etc.
They gave all of us a free promo code for the site, not sure if it works but it's worth a shot...when registering, indicate that you have a promo code and enter "NEWS4FREE" then press redeem.
cheers
...and you have a newspaper box in your living room. That's almost as ugly as THIS NEW FUCKING LAYOUT!!!!11oneeleventyone
@Brian B: Almost definitely.
@Michael: This layout is ugly, yes.
