We met with DivX earlier today to discuss their upcoming plans, and one of the topics that came up was support for the PS3 console. According to the company, they expect the previously announced firmware update to hit the PS3 soon, which will enable full DivX support for the console. Though no specific time frame was given for this upgrade, their particular emphasis on saying it was coming soon leads us to believe it's "coming in a week or two" soon, as opposed to "4 months down the road" soon.
As far as upgrade details go, the PS3 is DivX-certified, meaning not only is playback guaranteed to function properly, but game developers can also use the compression format for in-game cutscenes In comparison, the Xbox 360 merely supports playback of DivX-encoded videos [DivX]

Come on already!!! Oh and Rock Band GH3 patch FTW!
hmm, divx encoded cutscenes could certainly help some games that need ALL that a blu-ray disc has to offer, say....metal gear anyone?
I've gotta say the PS3's picking up it's mess, that's for sure.
I'm excited about the Warhawk expansion too.
@bobide: DivX is NOT the most efficient codec for video. There's a reason Blu-ray and HD DVD stick to VC1 and h.264/AVC.
DivX is just trying to maintain relevance by cutting all these deals with gadget manufacturers. DivX is dead as soon as random torrent uploaders stop using it (which is already happening).
Ahh... another reason i luv my PS3. : )
@DJJS: Indeed
I might be a good move as my xbmc can't handle HD xvid and this is definitely a good move.
Don't care about DiVX... bring me Internet radio! What kind of media player can't handle audio streams?!
if 360 got it. ps3 better get one soon. it's a lossy compression but heck, we're in a "feature" competition. The sooner the better.
internet radio?!?!
The PS3 will be the premier entertainment console. Now let's hear from the XB360 fanbois.
Finally. No more shall pirated material be confined to computer monitors!
I know shit about PS3 so help me out here.
My 14 year old son wants one.
Is this a good time to buy? Is it backwards compat with his PS2 games... any help/advice appreciated.
PS3 have 2 configurations
The $399 with 40 GB Hard Drive is not backwards compatible with PS2 games.
The $499 with 80 GB Hard Drive and a game included have backwards compatible via Software.
The discontinue 20 or 60 GB Hard Drive version was backward compatible in Hardware.
PS3 now have very good games + with ether version of the PS3 you get 5 free Blu-ray movies by mail.
I recommend games like: Heavenly Sword & Uncharted Drake Fortune.
@ANoel: If you can find a 60 gig model GET that otherwise get the 80 gig do NOT buy the 40 gig if you want backwards compatibility.
@OniMirage: The 20gb is fine as well if you don't mind not having wireless and a few card readers, but it's rarer than the 60gb. 80gb has BC for most ps2 games. 60/20 have near full BC. The 40gb has 0 BC for PS2 but near full for PS1.
I have all my dvd movies in divx format..and they look really good! so I'm loving this. And I also just swapped my PS3's original hard-drive for a bigger one...
so this is VERY Good!!!
PS3 as Media-Center... discuss...
@cgiddings: I think it's gonna be sweet. What I truly like about PS3 is it's flexibility. I can just go to frys and pick up the best hard drive deals and plug it in. No hassle. Also the fact that my 360 is loud enough that it's difficult to enjoy my anime collection. But I like it better than the older machine, that thing sounds like a lawn mower junior.
@OniMirage:
Thanks M8.... will hunt up a 60 then.
@scoobyonline2000: awesometastic.. now I'm thing is there some kind of a device that allows you to combine more than 1 external hard drive where PS3 can still see them all? Now this is gonna be even cooler.
@Anemone: The original 60 has the same feature as 80.
The Xbox 360 divx update is great.. pity the console sounds like a dustbuster on overload.
> the PS3 is DivX-certified, meaning not
> only is playback guaranteed to function
> properly, but game developers can also
> use the compression
Actually, that has nothing to do with being "certified". XBox could offer the same feature if they wanted to. DivX Certified means that the PS3 will work with the DivX Video On Demand system so you can purchase videos on-line and watch them on your PS3. See [vod.divx.com]
