Sony's European President Says 60GB to 80GB Upgrade 'Not Worth It'

You know that feeling of "that's it?" you had when you heard about Sony upgrading the PS3 from 60GB to 80GB and charging $599 for it? Sony's David Reeves had the exact same feeling. And he had the jalapeños to say it out loud. On the record. That's some spicy jalapeños.

Reeves says:

You know, the difference between 60 and the 80 gigabyte is very small. We just feel that going up 20 gigabyte is not worth it. If you're going to double it, it's worth it. So maybe you'll see something a little bit later, but 60 and 80, really not much difference.

In his defense, he was just talking about the hardware upgrade, not about the whole $599 pricing structure as a whole. Hey, they added Motorstorm in that bundle, a $60 value (if you can't find a used copy anywhere). [NextGeneration via Kotaku]

  • did he also say to stick w/ the ps2?

  • Tomorrows headline "Sony's David Reeves stepping down for "personal reasons, heading to EA"

    /hah

  • I'm with the suit, the PS3 is a rip-off. I'll be first in line for the non-Blu Ray version.

  • there can't be a non BD version because the games are on BD!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I would really REALLY like to get a PS3 but man, I just won't fork over $599 for one. (Then again I laid out twice that for 2 iPhones 2 weeks ago so what does that tell you?)... From what I hear the graphics on the PS3 a somewhat better than my xbox 360.

But, on topic; 80GB is nothing these days. When you and I can plop down $99 for a 500GB SATA HD you know Sony can buy them for $25 at the most. Grow a pair Sony, shove a real HD into the PS3 and be done with it.

  • Sike. I'll be first in line when it drops to $299.

  • XTREMECAMERA:

Then why don't you just buy the $500 60GB? You obviously can easily afford one and don't mind spending more an a product than it's worth...

I doubt you'll use up 60GB very fast on the ps3. And even if you do, you can buy yourself a 120GB for ~$80. Which in total would give you 180GB of HDD with your ps3 for less than $600...

  • Edit: *on a product...

  • They haven't fired this guy yet? Or at least told him to shut his big mouth?

  • @somerandomguy
haha!! good job. well, we really hope he dont get fired..he is passing along good info. but you know sony probably will...but it seems like you are upset that he leaked that in reality...its really not worth it. you get a free game...and 20 more gigs...which right may add $80 total to the cost...and they just wanted to charge you $20 extra just for the hell of it. way to go sony!! almost all the way back in the game now! NOT!!! =)

  • Hello Mr.Reeves,

I agree. Although some would fell otherwise. In today's world it's all about value for money. Especially when you have 100's of products to choose from. Consumers are brand concious and cost aware.

Everybody knows, want more sales, more reach, more ROI? And you'd better start charging less. If your an established brand, all the more reason to do so due to the competition.

I bet SONY would say, who said we're competing!LOL

We're just doing our best! We'll I certainly think so. But, yes, a 20 GB hike for $599? Not too steep, sure can do with a price cut considering mass appeal. A 120 GB for $599 seems a little more tempting...

    Interesting post Mr.Reeves...

    Have a great day!

    Regards,

    Sajjid Manuel

  • The difference between a 80GB hardisk and 60GB is what USD$9 so you have to wonder if the crack Sony execs have been smoking is starting to go up in price. Im still waiting for Sony Australia to "stop ripping Australian gamers off" with their USD$869 price tag for a 60GB PS3.

  • I gotta reiterate that I hate Sony now, if you live in Ireland you pay 629 euros ($867 US), which is a) at least 30 euros more than any where else in europe, and b) 195 euros ($268 US) more than the states.

This bullshit price gouging has put me off buying any Sony product in the future.

The only way it would be worse is if I lived back home in NZ where the PS3 is about $950 US.

  • @Sockpuppet:
What about here in Serbia where it is 700 EUR or 965$! Fancy buying a PS3 at that price?

  • I don't know why this is still news, everyone is missing the point. He's making the point that people with 60gb ps3s shouldn't run out and pick up the 80gb version. The 80gb version isn't intended to be a new upgrade path, its just an updated offering at the previous cost.

  • "The 80gb version isn't intended to be a new upgrade path, its just an updated offering at the previous cost."

AKA, a kick in the balls to anyone who already bought one. More than the price gouging, i'm really sick of Sony relying on it's previous success to sell their products instead of actually coming through with better products for their loyal consumers. It happened with the walkman and their music division and now it's happening to the PS. I'm not attacking Sony in favor of anything else, i'm just disappointed that the company that really could have pushed the envelope has gotten so lazy and greedy.

  • @kiwy82: Fair enough, I wouldn't buy one in serbia either. I guess everyone but the US and Japan cop it in the ass from Sony.

  • @Sockpuppet:
I guess so...let's hope that the free games bundle reaches me too :)
