Timbuk2's Hemlock and Q Backpacks Have Swing Around Easy Access to Your Laptop

I haven't carried a Boy Scout backpack in years, but the laptop feature in Timbuk2's latest sounds great: The sleeve is sideloading, meaning you can pull out your laptop without busting open your whole bag and spilling crap everywhere.

You'll actually notice that all of the bags have laptop compartments—that's because going forward, laptop bags won't be a separate category for Timbuk2, but a "function" of all of their bags. All of them hold 15 or 17-inch laptops, depending on the size bag you get. Up top, respectively, is Hemlock, Q and Swig. Swig doesn't have the sideloading awesomeness that Hemlock and Q do, but it's the first backpack of Timbuk2's that you can personalize the colors on. They come out later this month. Here's all the details:

Hemlock
Made for the urbanite that needs a pack to schlep around town in style – from the office, to the rock climbing gym, to courtside at the game, the pack features a rolled, expandable top, Swing Around Access™, a side-access compartment designed to fit a 17-inch laptop (15-inch in the small) and signature Timbuk2 D-ring bottle opener. Available in solid, color block and the official camo of the Navy Special Ops and the retail price is $90 for Small and $100 for Medium.

Design features include:

* Durable Ballistic nylon
* Waterproof flap liner
* Compression straps
* Accessory attachment loops
* Quick access pockets under front flap
* Padded back panel
* Lightweight Ergonomic Shoulder Straps
* And stash pocket hidden in the back

"Q" Computer Backpack
Appropriately named after the gadget inventor of the Bond movies, the "Q" has a place for everything. This pack is designed to fit a 15-inch laptop with multiple grab handles for convenience and Swing Around Accessâ„¢. Available in dark brown/black, army/spinach, rev red/gun metal, and black and the retail price is $100.

Design features include:

* Durable Ballistic nylon
* Swing Aroundâ„¢ access
* Padded laptop compartment
* Multiple grab handles
* Lightweight Ergonomic Shoulder Straps
* Pocket for cords and peripherals with outside access

H.A.L.
H.A.L. (Heuristically programmed Algorithmic Computer) is the "Q's" older brother, named after HAL 9000 of the Space Odyssey saga, which was capable of speech recognition, lip reading, art appreciation as well as maintaining all systems on the ship. Similarly, the H.A.L. almost thinks for its owner and easily runs a mobile office. Designed to fit a 17-inch laptop, the backpack has multiple grab handles and plenty of capacity as well as Swing Around Accessâ„¢. Available in dark brown and black and the retail price is $120.

Design features include:

* Durable Ballistic nylon
* Swing Aroundâ„¢ access
* Padded laptop compartment
* Multiple grab handles
* Lightweight Ergonomic Shoulder Straps
* Pocket for cords and peripherals with outside access

Swig
A messenger-inspired carry-all pack built for dudes AND ladies (Hallelujah!). Two large internal compartments accommodate loads of stuff and the organization panel makes it easy to find your keys. This sleek pack features a front-flap closure that comes in two sizes to fit a 15- or 17-inch laptop with a dedicated padded laptop compartment and the signature Timbuk2 bottle opener.
Want to Be the Real Q? Apply Here

If you want to be the gadget inventor for Her Majesty's Intelligence Service, the MI5British Military Intelligence Section 5 is actually offering the real post now. The best thing: It's part-time.

The MI5 is looking for a a chief scientific adviser to "lead and coordinate its scientific work." Someone that has "world-class scientific expertise and credibility, excellent strategic skills, outstanding influencing and communication skills" and a successful record of "managing critical projects and processes in a complex environment." No word on having to wear tailor-made three-piece suits.

Professor John BeddingtonUK's chief scientific advisersays the role of Q would be to keep the British intelligence ahead of enemieswhich I guess means Russia, Argentina, and Spain. He says that "it will involve a sort of future gazing to see where technology will be taking us in a year or so," so Tarot readers and crystal balls may be a plus.

And yes, it's not the MI6which is the secret intelligence service in which James Bond workedbut the MI5 works alongside them, so you may get part of the action. Yes, that kind of action. Only part-time though: Two ro three days a week, the ad says. The rest of the time you could keep your job as a supermarket cashier in Tesco's, which will be your secret identity. [Daily Mail]

Minox Spy Camera Goes Digital, Still Tiny Enough to Please Q

Spy-technology aficionados will know about Minox's miniature camera and it's genuine espionage heritage, and now the camera's gone all modern with a digital face lift. A 5-megapixel sensor's been plopped into the Digital SpyCam, which remains tiny at just 3 and 3/8 x 1 and 3/16 x 7/8-inches and weighing in at 2.1 ounces: small enough to disappear into a leather-clad fist when it needs to be concealed. With a lithium battery, and 42mm equivalent lens, plus capability of saving onto 16GB memory cards, it's no slouch either. Budding spys, and perhaps genuine ones (Mi6 take note) will be able to grab one now for $199. Shit blowing up all the time, everyone just grinning and shaking their head knowingly (oh, James) when I accidentally incinerated prototype after expensive and high-time-investment prototype. Now? Dude's just going to down to the high street shops and slapping some logos on. Look at this laptop—it's garden variety Z-series: 13.3 inches, Core 2 Duo, 128GB SSD, 4GB RAM, 3G connection, Blu-ray. And he's billing M £3,000 ($5,300) for it.
Question of the Day: Do You Miss the "Q" Character in the New James Bond Films?

As most of you already know, Quantum of Solace is scheduled to hit theaters on November 14th. The second trailer for the film came out last week and while it does seem to feature some Minority Report-style gadgetry, there is still no "Q" gadget guru in the film. Personally, I love the direction that the Bond character is going in, so I haven't really missed the over-the-top gadgetry. But what about you? Do you miss the "Q" character?

Motorola's got another Q in the queue in the form of the new Napolean world phone. It's a CDMA smartphone for Verizon that does double duty with GSM, so you can use it pretty much anywhere. It also includes Wi-Fi if you're not feeling like using its EV-DO Revision A or EDGE data, runs Windows Mobile 6.1, and includes a fingerprint scanner and a 2-megapixel camera with flash.
The Veldini Q Wristwatch Was Inspired By James Bond: And it Has the Spy Gadgets to Prove It

Even if eavesdropping on your co-worker's personal phone calls is the closest you will ever get to becoming a spy, a watch filled with spy gadgets is hard for any man to resist. Perhaps that is why Veldini plans on releasing at least 3 different models of their new "Q" James Bond inspired wristwatch. Each will feature its own set of tools geared towards a specific scenario: outdoor use, spy use, and everyday use.

The outdoor version will include a flat Phillips screwdriver, flint stick and combo edge blade while the spy version will utilize a diamond tip glass cutter, Phillips head screwdriver, lock pick, magnifying glass and a straight edge blade. Users interested in the everyday version will get a flat Phillips screwdriver, bottle opener, refillable pen, magnifying glass and a combo-edge blade. As an added touch, the design of the "Q" watch resembles the hammer mechanism of 007's Walther PPK pistol.

The watches are currently in pre-production and a timetable for their release has not yet been determined. However, expect to pay far out the ass to feel like James Bondto the tune of $2-$3,000 for the sterling silver model, $5-$7000 for Gold or Rose Gold and $10-$15,000 for platinum.

For those of you who were waiting, praying for the Motorola Q to come to AT&T, we have two things to say. One, you can quit it, because AT&T's just put up a promo page detailing that their Q wil have WM6, 3G, integrated GPS, quad-band GSM, BlackBerry Connect, Push Email, XPress Mail, and the same old Moto Q design. The second thing: get some taste in phones. Motorola Q's are pretty darn lousy, as both Wilson and Charlie can attest to.
Motorola Q Goes Global with Moto q9 and Moto GSM

Now people all over the world can be annoyed by the Motorola Q, with the Moto Q q9 officially rolling out in Barcelona with the ability to handle that quick like a bunny HSDPA connectivity. There's also a Moto Q GSM model debuting, so now you can connect up all over the world on the Q with quad-band GPRS and Edge capability. Plus, both of the these latest Q family members have the latest Microsoft Windows Mobile 6 software on board.

If you're familiar with the first generation Motorola Q, you might notice the styling updates in these new models, too, where no longer do you see that big honking Jay Leno chin on the thing, and the keys look like they're little easier to navigate as well. And of course, there's that obvious difference, where this one is available in that oh so cool black color.

If only Motorola had released this design initially, perhaps we'd be a bit more fond of our Motorola Q. Charlie White

This time it is resting cozily next to its lesser, insignificant brother, the regular Q. It looks like Motorola ditched the red letter seen earlier for some normal, white letters.

Not much info. My friend just told me it was "fast", so I'm betting it has HSDPA/UMTS.

While the only visible difference between the black Motorola Q, and the $50 cheaper regular Motorola Q is the coat of paint, there are actually various improvements on the inside as well.

There's improved power management that gives you longer battery life, Bluetooth headset volume control, email client fixes, and a rubberized grip for less slippage. Seeing as it's only $50, and the black does look better than the silver, we'd recommend this improved one over the original. But you knew we would say that. Jason Chen

Motorola Q Pro Early 2007?

According to one report from Gartner Symposium ITxpo, the Motorola Q Pro is confirmed for launch in the first quarter of 2007. Aside from unspecific hardware upgrades, the Moto Q Pro will come in black (the new black) and sport the Motorola MOTOPRO Mobility Suite - allowing remote device and application management along the ability to disable the camera. Interesting catch-phrases, but it's all propaganda until we see how this new software actually functions.

The other upgrades focus on corporate data security - including features like virtual private networking and data-encrypted emailing. Yawn - no one is interested in what I have to say, trust me. There is not word on price, but we do know it will cost more than the Motorola Q. Mark Wilson

Sprint Nextel's CEO Len Lauer said that they're going to get the Motorola Q come Q4 2006. Their poor financial results discussed at during today's conference call were seen by some analysts as caused by not carrying the popular Motorola phones like the RAZR or SLVR.

Is the HTC phone with the codename Excalibur this phone? Smartphone thoughts thinks it is, and says it's only a few millimeters thicker than the Samsung i320 and 2 millimeters shorter. The keyboard on the front makes this a Motorola Q/Samsung i320 contender, and the Quad-band and WiFi connectivity makes GSM users (Cingular, T-Mobile) jump for joy.

Another interesting feature is the touch-strip control on the right that they chose to go with instead of a jog-dialif this is indeed the Excalibur, and not the phone-in-the-stone.

Just a heads up for bargain hunting Gizmodo readers. Over at Amazon, the Moto Q is now as cheap as it is thin, at $75 after Verizon and Amazon rebates. We find that the phone runs a little slower than we'd like, and the design isn't as nice as the RAZRs. But at this price, I'd call it the best deal of all the smartphones. Brian Lam

A near-clone of the Motorola Q, it has a 2.2-inch LCD, 1.3-megapixel camera and a microSD slot, and its 11.5mm thickness exactly matches the Q, too. Heck, from spitting distance, you might think someone was holding a black Q. That must've been the general idea.

We've seen the invisibleSHIELD around here a couple of times, but are you confident in its protective power? Dave from Mobility Today is—he's got bigger huevos than us—and he put his money where his Q was by taking a key and trying to scratch up his brand new Motorola Q. The result, no damage whatsoever.

Now you can feel safe with your $199 iPod Nano when the shield is strong enough protect a $500 smartphone. – Jason Chen

Basically meaning the plethora of rumors and speculation that we have posted in the past are no longer rumors because a fancy press release says so. Here it is—get ready—it is big and monumental.

The Motorola Q will be available from Verizon wireless online on May 31 and in stores in June! Wowee! Wasn't that spectacular? Additionally the Motorola Q will retail for $199 after a $100 instant rebate as long as you sign your soul over to Verizon for two years. That is a pretty good price compared to the other Windows Mobile-powered phones out there.

Taken at Israel Tech Ed last week, the video shows off both the Motorola Q and the Samsung i-320. The Q's UI looks pretty responsive, and the screen's quality is pretty good.

The Samsung's keys also look interesting, with a BlackBerry-like dual purpose keys. Instead of horizontally dividing the keys, Samsung divided them vertically. You'll have to watch the video to see what we mean.

Motorola Q Not Really Launching On Verizon Next Week?

Either Motorola CEO Ed Zander is confused, or some spokesperson is going to get a whuppin'.

Contradicting Zander's statements earlier this week, a Verizon spokesperson claimed that there is going to be no launch event next week. Perhaps Zander was using the announcement to force Verizon's hand early, maybe as a result of the Q being delayed so many times.

Either way, the Q should be out fairly soon. They've even got a contest to win one.

The smartphone is being released on EVDO, which means Verizon and Sprint will get it first, the GSM UMTS and possibly HSDPA version should roll out sometime later this year.

After suffering delays, the Q will go up against Nokia's E61, the Treo 700p and 700w, and all the BlackBerry devices. It will compete against all sorts of Windows Mobile phones that are purchasable over the internet from overseas.

Why is the Q better than all the rest? You tell us. Why are you looking forward to the Q rather than buying another Windows Mobile device already?

The Motorola Q news has been running rampant lately. We've seen it being rumored to be released last month, seen it in the wild and even heard about it's latest abandonment of a European release, but today we are hit with another shocker as the Q gets officially delayed another month. The Q had an initial release date of Q1 2006 and with this delay the Q might be pushing that estimated release to its furthest boundaries. At this point we are just hoping to see it by the 2006 holiday season.

Verizon To Release Motorola Q Next Week?

We're not sure how reliable the source is, but in an interview this week, a Motorola design manager told one of your faithful Gizmodo newshounds that the Q could be released as soon as next week. What makes us think it might be legit? He was holding a working model in his hands, and it was up and running on Verizon's network.

Our first impressions from holding it in our hot little hands for a few minutes: this sucker's extremely thin, although a bit wider than our Treo 650. The screen is a bit squat for our liking, though, even if it's crisp; with the soft-key icons running along the bottom and an info bar across the top, we weren't able to display a ton of information on it all at once. On the flip side, though, the buttons have a nice tactile feel; and the side jog-dial is pretty handy indeed. Maybe the GSM version will be even more sexy? Only time will tell.

Motorola Q Phone Says Buh-Bye to Europe?

BargainPDA is passing on the rumor (via the French website Mobinaute) that "the Motorola Q has been cancelled in Europe and the only model that will see the light of day is the CDMA version to be released in the US on the Verizon network." You may remember that the Q phone was originally slated for this month, then Motorola announced it would be available for Christmasbut never delivered on the promise. The fate of this phone is anyone's guess, but after getting some hands-on time with it at CES I don't see why Motorola would continue delaying it. Unless, of course, they want to replace the Windows Mobile 5 with that new Linux OS (the one they announced with the ROKR E2), which would be more than fine by me.

Motorola Q in the Wild

Some rascally rabbit out there got a hold of the not-yet-released Motorola Q and decided to feed the smartphone fan love by releasing some pictures and information. The Q is available through Verizon and the rumors bouncing around are placing a $2,500 price tag on this beast. Early reports are saying that the web browsing via EV-DO is amazing, but complaints are coming in regarding the key layout. This phone should be out in early 2006. Check out the linkage for more pictures.

Here we go. Let the cavalcade of Q leaks begin. BengalBoy is the first with his collection of Q photos sans his normal displays of horrible, filthy vulgarity involving his Kittens. What kind of man wants to watch scantily clad women writhing around a handheld? I blame Grand Theft Auto.

Anyway, close up shots, nothing terribly earth-shattering. Just wondering where Mr. Boy is grabbing his leaked hardware from.

Motorola Q Launched, But You Can't Have It

The Motorola Q, named after the affable yet superintelligently dangerous villain on Star Trek: The Force Is With You, will appear on store shelves in 6-9 months reminding us that, like the common house shrew and the human female, electronics have a lengthy gestation period.

The Q, which is known in some circles as the Blackberry-killer, won't be killing any Blackberries until Q1 2006. In the intervening months it will train with the famous swordsmith Hattori Hanzo in preparation for its massive showdown with the Blackberry in a sprawling, 4-star hotel in California.

What else? Not much. It's a skinny QWERTY phone running Windows Mobile and it quit clearly has quite a few hooks in at old Exchange Server Place so it can send and receive email like a champ. Other than that, I'm holding my breath until the RAZR 2007 comes out. It will be so thin that it will be just a piece of aluminum foil folded over once.
