If you were to buy the Zune, hypothetically, would you buy a first generation Zune with 30GB of storage for $100, since it runs the same software as the Zune 2? Or do you like the smaller sizes and touch pad of the second generation Zune? Why? [How to Comment]

No, I wouldn't.
I think the "skip to current results" link is broken.
I think the "skip to current result" links on this page is broken...
(*) No fucking zune whatsoever because $100 + Every Shred of Dignity I Possess is still too expensive.
@Bong14: YES! Apparently, None of the above hasn't dawned upon the author.
"what's he got's in his pockets'es"
Zune or nothing - gollum.
Umm... it did dawn on the author as you can tell by the very first word of his paragraph: "If".
The old one is a deal. I'll definitely be picking one up.
none of the above.
@nutbastard: @Bong14: The Poll Was about Would U buy*!~~ not asking u if u would or not!- buy one prd.. Stupidfanboys..
I've got my Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro's connected to the Zune 80 as I type this. The sound output through the audio jack is miles above that of the iPod.
They narrowed it down to 3 of the players..
witch one would u pick .. ? its easy.. if u dont want to buy one dont knock on it..
i have an ipod its sweet.. but i know a zune sounds better..
I'd get the Zune 80, but I heard its really hard to find right now.
It's worth noting that the 30gb really isn't that great a deal, based on a price per gigabyte, it's damned near the same price. Observe my amazing math skillz:
30gb @ $100 = $3.33 per gig
80gb @ $250 = $3.13 per gig
If you're thinking about buying the old zune because it fits your budget, fine, great, good for you. But if you're looking at it and thinking it's a good deal, dollars for size, I'd disagree. Especially when you consider how much better battery life each generation of media players gets.
@nutbastard: @Bong14: @ltcmurray:
Seriously, fuck off. There's no need to flame every Zune post.
IT OUTPUTS A HIGHER QUALITY AUDIO SIGNAL, MAKING IT SUPERIOR IN SOUND QUALITY.
Deal with it.
If you want a player as a fashion statement, you should reevaluate your life. Is the purpose not to LISTEN TO MUSIC? Or watch movies? The Zune has a far superior audio chip, and can drive high impedence headphones better than any generation iPod.
Go ahead, try to argue that.
What, the bullshit, zany choices are only for Apple related polls?
Where's the "I Hate iPods" and "ZOMG You're Such Apple Fanboyz" type of options?
@Marty_MacFly: Good point.
@Marty_MacFly: Don't reply if you don't want a Zune.
@Brian Lam: I gotta go with Marty on this one. I think he was merely pointing out that there wasn't any funny options, which their usually are. And one has to have humor in anything MS or Apple related, what with the rabid fanboys like Nutbastard up there.
@luckypictures: Sweet Point!
30gig for 100 bucks?
Sounds fine by me.
For the sake of fairness, Apple did come close with one product. Speculation is that they used the Wolfsen chip for it's power efficiency, but the 1st generation Shuffle actually puts out a very very high quality signal. It's not enough to drive high imp headphones, but when fed into an amp, it's as good as a LOD, if not better.
Gots 4 30 GB refurb Zunes on the way from Woot with 2 free Zune accessory kits. Fun times. The old 40 GB iPod gets the axe and some lucky relatives are getting sweet gifts.
@luckypictures: Very very is used in a relative sense.
I'm a smartass! WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
Seriously though, I'd not mind picking up a new zune, but i'm more of a deal person. I'd give it some time and wait for my 5th gen ipod to die gruesomely...if ever. Hell, my 3rd gen ipod still works wonders, but the video has spoiled me.
I upgraded my 30 to the new firmware and to be honest I couldnt be happier.
Id get one of the old ones off of Woot. They have them for around $80 from time to time. For that its decent for playing videos on the plane or something.
With the older ones getting the sweet firmware I would take either! (But I voted for the original)
MS supporting first adopters is really awesome and it has made the Zune go up a few clicks with me.
Why would anyone want a 1 year-old piece of hardware that looks 15 years old? Well, unless you get off on still using your original Motorola StarTAC.
I'm with you other 1,200-some smart asses.
New Zune for me thanks. I mean, their new and they look better.
todo:
- converge on the one js api call
- poll owner id's
+ check referrer - otherwise ppl will be able to put polls anywhere
+ fix schema bug in poll - created_ts is always last update
+ transactions for tally
+ deleted poll results - handle cache, etc
+ vote form cache
I already have the Zune30, and once I get the cash, I'm gonna try and sell my old one for the 80. I love the glass screen and slimmer size, and I think the pad is great. Best of both worlds, clickwheel fun with d-pad precision.
@duckers: Smartasses have spoken and Gizmodo loves you and honors you with a fourth and final poll option. Go smart asses!
@Brian Lam: And this is why we love the Giz.
I picked up 2 30GB Zunes. One for $100 and one for $80. The flash ones were too small and the 80 was way too big for my music collection or wife's collection.
I got it it for listening to music at my desk or listening to music/watching videos on frequent plane trips. Works fantastic for both.
Looks were the last thing on my mind when I bought them. (I've got a 1 GB Sandisk player for the gym that is plain fugly.) Still I do think the old and new Zunes look nice.
To all the iPod fans: I'm glad you really like your iPod. I really like my Zune. Have a nice night.
I am getting an 80GB Zune after Xmas.
the purpose of my post is to officially FLAME THE ZUNE. NO ONE LIKES YOU ZUNE. FUCK YOU MICROSOFT!
Installing the firmware update on your Zune 30 is like getting a whole new product.
It is amazing!
@MacAddict21: So has Gizmodo's previous Apple bias attracted users like this? I think so. How come we all have to express our opinions on everything; The peanut gallery is rarely appreciated.
(By the way, I don't think anyone's really said it, but you guys have become a great deal more fair. I suppose it's all really subjective and superficial, but personally I really think it's been 'better')
smartasses unite! we can beat engadget!!!
Only a cheap bastard like myself would opt for the 30GB model.
flash zunes seems to be no good deal for most of people here...
when white 80 will show up?
I bought a 30 gig when my iRiver crashed and burned and Woot was selling them. Only later did I discover Microsoft had the brilliant idea to give Firmware 2 to all Zune 1s, and it was good.
New Zune 80 all of the way. I've never been one for brand allegiance. However, knowing that owning an ipod gives me a mark of approval from the most outspoken group of fanboys and all the smug attitude associated with it, I will gladly take the zune. I know there are good apple fanboys and bad zune fanboys (I hate the word fanboy fyi) but at the end of the day, I don't care what you are only if what you are consists of some sense of rationality... ...which I can't say I've seen much of.
@luckypictures:
not to be a smartalec, but you can definitely find a 30GB Zune for $90 or less - $3.00/GB
Note that the Woot! earlier this week had it at $85 - $2.83/GB.
On a completely separate note, the results link is broken.
@MIKEAWESOME:
i was an apple fan boy way before gizmodo ever was, so gizmodo hasn't "attracted me" to anything. and everyone keeps calling gizmodo "apple fanboys" which isn't entirely inaccurate, but......... Gizmodo spends hours testing out, reviewing and reporting on products. Its not their fault that they are captivated by a company that is clearly superior to all others in design, features, ease of use, and just overall AWESOMEness. the only people that complain about gizmodo being apple fanboys, are people who are microsoft fanboys. whats the big deal? everyone has a favorite. the only obvious thing is that zunes suck. hah!
@Ron-Mexico: Hah, I guess that's why went for that option too.
The old Zune might be big and it might be heavy but $89 bucks was a bargin. Beside, who cares how heavy it is as long as you can stick it inside your wife's purse...
I bought a woot Zune to replace my stolen iPod and you know what? The Zune is a pretty good MP3 player and a real bargain at less than $100. The sound quality is better than an iPod and to me it's noticeable. The player interface is pretty decent, especially with the update. The software is not as good as iTunes, but still very useable. Nice to have the built-in FM, too.
New Zunes all the way (I already own the old Zune)
Hey a new i-pod came out yesterday did anyone happen to see it,only kidding but would you be suprised? unlike apple at least microsoft is taking into consideration it loyal customers and offering up a new firmware for the older players, giving them a new experience for being loyal to their brand-what did you ever get from apple-a new firmware that gives you new features and makes old things new again? i thought not, apple simply releases a new player every month or so that makes you feel like your current i-pod is out dated not up to date-not to mention featureless and boring congrats to microsoft and screw the fan-boyism anyone else agree that the apples are rotten?
@MacAddict21:
Your swollen membership in the Apple Fannyboy Club is duly noted.
Now, go fuck yourself.
