The More We Know About the RED Scarlet Camera, the Better It Looks

My head has barely stopped spinning over the sneak peek of the RED Scarlet 2/3" camera, yet there's already a schedule for her release and some more pictures of the beauty. Best part? Looks like she'll be available this summer.

As a refresher, Scarlet brings some rather nice features:

* Increased REDCODE data rates
* New FLUT Color, Gamma and Sensitivity Science. Now same as EPIC.
* More extensive modular system integration.
* Interchangeable Lens mounts including focus and iris control of electronic RED, Canon and Nikon lenses, along with Zoom data (Scarlet 2/3" Interchangeable)
* "Touch Focus Tracking" with electronic lens mounts and RED touchscreen LCD's (Scarlet 2/3" Interchangeable and 8x Fixed)
* Two independent microphone level channels, balanced input circuits, 48V Phantom Power, digitized at 24-bit 48KHz.
* GigaBit Ethernet port
* Scaled 1080P at 60fps

Now onto the eye candy we both know you came here for. Meet Scarlet and her band of lenses and accessories:

Assuming everything goes according to schedule, we'll be seeing this line of cameras in the summer of 2010, while some of the lenses will be out as early as December. Yeah, I won't be getting them either, but I'll keep drooling anyway. [RedUser]

The RED Digital Film Cameras' Spec Lists Are As Big As Their Prices

We've drooled over accessories for RED's digital still and motion cameras, but now we've got specs for the actual DSMCs.

The other temptress is the Scarlet 2/3-inch, which is "more akin to current video-shooting DSLRs, though it doesn't have a full frame sensor." As with the EPIC-X, there's no release date given. There are some great specs though:

* Increased REDCODE data rates

Red Epic Used to Shoot Sexiest Woman Alive, Kate Beckinsale, at 5K Resolution

It's technologically interesting since, with both the 3K and the 5K Red cameras, they're able to take video and strategically take out frames to use as stills. This makes it a lot easier on the photographer since he doesn't need to know, intuitively, when the best few seconds are to snap a stream of shots—he can just point the thing and tell Kate to be sexy.

It's too bad for Kate though, because in order to crown a new Sexiest Woman Alive next year, Esquire will have to have her put down. [Esquire]

Esquire's Sexiest Woman Alive, Filmed at Delicious 5K Super High Resolution

Last year, Esquire shot Megan Fox in 3K resolution using the Red One. This year, they're going to 5K (yes, 5K, meaning you can see her pores) for the Sexiest Woman Alive, using Red's Epic. Here's a (low res) taste:

We'll have to wait another month for another teaser as they pull the slow reveal. Still, not a bad way to show off the Epic's Mysterium-X sensor. [Esquire]

Oh, and I'm admittedly surprised by how well the GH1 appears to keep up with the Red One and 5D Mark II. Of course, at full resolution, it might be a different story. But if you were really torn between the Red One and GH1 for some reason, I guess your decision got a bit harder.

Megan Fox Esquire Cover Shot In Video, Not Stills

If the fusion of video cameras and dSLRs hadn't blurred enough before, Esquire shot their June issue cover of Megan Fox in video—a purported first in the magazine world.

Rather than click and endless series of stills, photographer Greg Williams shot the cover with the 4K Red ONE video camera. Fox essentially acted out a scene for 10 minutes, the best moment of which will appear on the June 2009 cover. (Not to be wasteful of Megan Fox footage, the video will also be uploaded to Esquire's site, of course.)

It's fascinating that as digital cameras evolve, so will the roles of photographers, models and publications. I can't see traditional photography ever dying, but whether photos will always be captured in photographs is another question.
Crank: High Voltage Directors Talk Cameras and Filming While Rollerblading

As you can probably guess from their movies, Crank: High Voltage directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor have sort of a different filmmaking philosophy that's as dangerous and awesome as what they produce.

In a recent interview, the two directors discuss their need to use handheld, consumer cameras (from RED, Canon, and Sony), as well as their tendency to make the filming of their movies as badass as the movies themselves. Many of the scenes are filmed while rollerblading (sometimes while hanging onto cars), and they acknowledge that filming the Crank movies is a legitimately dangerous task.

More to our interests, Neveldine and Taylor seem to be total camera nerds, using dozens of different cameras to capture exactly the right feel for each scene. They're early adopters and even joke that "Pretty soon, I think we'll both walk to set with BlackBerrys that have HD capabalities, and then we'll just shoot the movie on our little phones."

Check out the interview, it's great to see exactly how these guys are making the sometimes-dreary action movie genre totally fun again. [Moveline]

Paired with a 100mm RED PRIME PRO lens here, the 2/3" Scarlet captures footage at 3K resolution.

Jarred Land from RED says this is the first footage from the 2/3" Scarlet prototypes and that the frame above was pulled straight from the video. He also says this "heavily compressed" and "quick and dirty." We should all aspire to assemble things as quickly and dirtily as this.
The Sanctuary Crew Sure Does Like Their RED Cameras

Sanctuary isn't a terribly popular (or interesting) show, but it does look nice. It's no coincidence, then, that they're the first North American production to exclusively use RED cameras .

As a production, Sanctuary has taken a lot of risks—they were also the first TV show to go almost completely green-screened, depending on rendered backgrounds for many of their shots. Oddly enough, this technique allowed the RED to really shine.

The crew gushes over the RED One, speaking mostly about its ease of use and versatility, and hinting that its reasonable price allowed the cameramen to spend a bit more on cinema-grade lenses. The most important ability of the RED, as far as Sanctuary is concerned, is resolution. With digital chopping an manipulation the name of the game, it's vital that individual components of the video can be cut and integrated into a composite scene without losing clarity, something which the One's massive 4k sensor makes possible.

It's also interesting to note how using a camera like this changes the production dynamics of a show; reviewing and editing footage occurs almost instantly, rather than hours later as in a traditional film production. So interesting is the production scheme, in fact, that it's the most interesting thing about this entire show. Oh well! [Dvice]

iPhone 3G Red Looks Cool but It's Fake

French site Nowhereelse has their hands on some photos that look suspiciously like a (RED) version of the 16GB iPhone 3G. However, it's lacking the telltale (RED) badge, making this pic dubious at best. Update.

Also, it could be the way the pic was taken, but the red color just doesn't seem right. Or maybe I'm starting to go color blind. Either way, it could be a case or a legit (RED) iPhone 3G. Or maybe it's just a nice, glossy paint job by someone who wishes there were a (RED) 3G out there in the wild.

Regardless, this kind of simple announcement is one we could easily expect to see Apple making at MacWorld this week.

Update: Thanks to Julio, we have a link to the source. It'll also come with a bundled copy of New Super Mario Bros, and it'll set you back $150.
New announcement on Dec. 3rd. Everything has changed... just as we promised. :-)

:-)? :-)? What do your cryptic smilies mean, Jim?

Video Game "O Faces" Captured with RED Camera

British photographer Robbie Cooper used stills from the video taken by his RED camera to show that look of total concentration achieved by kids as they play some particularly absorbing video games, including Grand Theft Auto IV and Call of Duty 4.

Cooper had the kids look at a reflection of the game in a plane of glass, and put his camera behind the glass so the kids wouldn't be self-conscious about the giant fancy camera pointed right in their faces. This technique is evidently Cooper's homage to Errol Morris' "Interrotron" that the filmmaker used for many of his documentaries. The interplay between the real and unreal worlds is Cooper's ostensible subject, but mostly the photos are just great to look at.

The stills are fantastic quality and it's an odd bit of voyeurism to look straight into somebody's eyes when they're concentrating on something totally different. The other galleries on the site are all really impressive, but this one hit me hard: I'm sure that's how I look right now, staring at my laptop screen.
At Gizmodo Gallery: The Red One Camera

We'll have a lot more than the 1983 Apple Phone prototype at the upcoming Gizmodo Gallery. Perhaps you were interested in getting a good look at the famous Red One camera? That's good, because we sorta know a guy.

The Red One camera was never really interested in capturing HD video (1920x1080). Instead, the system's Super 35mm-sized Mysterium sensor captures footage at 4K (3626x2664) in precious RAW format. The camera starts at only $17,000, but once you get it fully loaded, the system can approach $80,000. Sound like a lot of money? It is. But seeing as it doesn't require purchasing or developing costly film and it still manages to nip the heels of 35mm quality, the Red One represents the democratization of an ever-opening Hollywood system.

The Red One will be at Gizmodo Gallery this December 4th-7th, in NYC.

RED Unloads Modular Cameras, a DSLR, 3D and 28k

Rumors of a RED DSLR had been confirmed a long time ago, but what of the Scarlet and EPIC übercamcorders? On the REDUser forums, RED CEO Jim Jannard has explained it all: Scarlet and EPIC are the DSLR — all cameras are "part of the same DSMC system", so each and every camera will be part of a modular, build-your-own, still and video product line based on the Scarlet and EPIC 'Brains'. To do this, RED has furnished an insanely diverse new collection of components, with sensors ranging from the $2500 3k Scarlet to the $55,000, 28k EPIC 617 Mysterium Monstro.

The core of the new line is made up of the new 'Mysterium' brains, pictured in the gallery above and detailed in the gallery below. These boxy sensors can be built up into 5D-esque DSLRs, compact prosumer camcoders, full-fledged professional video cameras or even a 3D unit with a new line of lenses, flash storage, frames, mounts and other add-ons, outlined with the new sensors below. In addition to their own lenses, the new cameras mercifully support gear built for Nikon and Canon standards with mount adapters, so you don't have to re-buy all of your optics. In spring, when the first of the new units are intended to ship, RED One users won't be left out in the cold — they'll get purchase credit towards new cameras, or if they'd just like to throw one of the new sensors into their existing rig, credit towards that. I guess this is what Jannard meant when he said RED had a 'new vision'.

RED Re-Teases Nov 13 Announcement With Camera Ports, More Hyperbole

In case you forgot there's a big RED announcement happening this week on November 13, RED CEO Jim Jannard is again lighting up the RED User forums with another cryptic tease. Saying nothing more than "Not sure what this means..." the outspoken exec lets fly some ports for the company's upcoming übercamera. As CrunchGear rightly notes, we're probably looking at two XLR ports, video outs and a proprietary connector. We'll know all on Thursday. And for all the pre-buzz, the RED people have made some really spectacular gear and we can't wait to see it trickle into consumer level gear.
RED Teases Nov 13th Announcement With Cryptic Renders, More Hyperbole

RED CEO Jim Jannard is either an incredible visionary or prone to serial exaggeration. Just yesterday, he deigned to visit the RED forums, promising that "[RED is] doing things we never thought possible... When we do post, it will be very obvious why we needed a bit more time to 'spill the beans'." As a teaser, he decided to spill two of those beans early, in the form of vague, zoomed-in renders of RED's new HIV-curing, hunger-ending, climate-stabilizing übercamera.

Owners of any number of popular DSLRs will notice some familiar controls in these renders, but what does that mean? It seems obvious that Jannard's lovable breathlessness is for his new RED DSLR (or DSMC, I guess), and that his enthusiasm hasn't been diminished in light of the stunning video performance of Canon's 5D DSLR. RED certainly has a track record of innovation, but could Canon have beat them to the DSLR HD video punch? [RedUser via Crunchgear]

Red's CEO Confirms "Incredible" Product Re-Jig Announcement, November 13

We already knew Red was going to totally revise its Epic and Scarlet cameras, and there was a rumor about a Red DLSR too: but Jim Jannard—Red's CEO—has just popped up on the RedUser forums and confirmed that there's going to be an announcement about the new Epics and Scarlets on November 13th. And if that news alone isn't interesting enough, get what Jim has to say about it:

I want to say that no one has any idea how incredible this announcement will be. Call this hype... please. I am quite sure that the announcement will be called a "scam". Should be a lot of fun to hear the reactions. I can't wait.

Doesn't that sound like something you definitely want to hear about? It's a pretty bold move making such a statement in so public a forum, and that's got our collective camera-geek brains ticking over. Could it be the fabled 4k video capture, a response to Canon and Nikon's recent video DSLR maneuver? We can't tell, of course...but at least we've not got long to wait to find out. [RedUser Thanks Brad!]

Mitsubishi LaserVue vs. Pioneer Kuro Plasma: The High-End Throwdown

The dudes over at The Tech Lounge sat down for a real-world—not canned—comparison of Mitsubishi's cutting-edge, 65-inch LaserVue HDTV with the current reigning champ, Pioneer's 60-inch Kuro plasma set. Does Mitsubishi's fancy new tech really make for a better high-def experience? The tests show, at the very least, that the LaserVue can certainly hold its own against maybe the best HDTV in the world: "You're not going to find a set that is capable of displaying colors quite like this one."

The Kuro still held strong with its deep, bottomless blacks, but the LaserVue is noticeably better on colors, especially reds. The LaserVue is also better able to handle scenes with tons of motion than the Kuro, especially during action scenes in Iron Man. You can see above that the Kuro, on the right, makes the red of Iron Man's suit look too simple, while the LaserVue on the left has all the dirt and scars of a real battle. Below, the LaserVue's reds really pop, able to show the difference between the hues in the woman's top and skirt much more clearly than the Kuro—which is even from Pioneer's demo disc.

We've seen the LaserVue reviewed before, but only while using Mitsubishi's hand-picked content, which doesn't necessarily make for the most accurate test. Kurtis and Cameron at The Tech Lounge got themselves a Panasonic DMP-BD30K Blu-Ray player and a copy of both Ice Age: Meltdown and Iron Man to test out color, clarity, and motion on the "normal" settings of both HDTVs. They came away impressed with the color, but not with the hefty $7000 price tag. Still, if you can afford it, and you don't mind its fatty rear-projection girth, the LaserVue is definitely the cream of the crop. [Tech Lounge]

Nothing special is going on with the buttons or functions, but each controller is forcibly bundled with a Play & Charge kit, meaning that they run a steep $65 a pop. The price may seem crazy, but if you actually search retailers for the limited edition package, you'll see it's really selling for somewhere around $53.75.
Red Scarlet Cam Replaced With a "New Vision"

Red's Jim Jannard has told fans in the RedUser forums to "Wipe your minds of the past announced Scarlet. Forget the design and forget the price. It is all different now. We think you will be surprised." In his words, "the market has changed and we have discovered a lot of things in the process. We have a new vision." So it is not as though the Scarlet cam has been scrapped—what we are talking about here is a ground up redesign that should be a positive thing for consumers. That having been said, the RED EPIC is going to receive a similar treatment as well.

What they are planning at this point is unclear, however threads in the RedUser forum confirm this much: the names will remain the same, new specs and working models should be available by the 2009 NAB show with a release to follow soon thereafter, and RED is aiming to fulfill initial orders before the fall of 2009. Jannard also noted that "the prices will be very near our target" with regard to Scarlet, so we could be in for an even better camera at a price point similar to the $3000 quoted initially. [RedUser and RedUser Redesign via Boing Boing Gadgets]

Red Confirms DSLR, Says It's Bigger "Revolution" Than Red One

Red, makers of the famous Red One camera, have confirmed their upcoming DSLR while dropping breadcrumbs of specs for us to gobble up. First things first, don't call it at SLR—it's a "replacement for DSLRs" going internally by the name DSMC (Digital Still and Motion Camera). And if we're reading between the lines correctly, they're teasing that the camera will feature video content above hi def.

While (insert code name) is not a replacement for Epic or Scarlet, it is strategically targeted at the DSLR space. As Nikon and Canon release their 720P and 1080P, respectively, DSLRs with video capture... RED has a more advanced view of the future.

My personal reading on this is that the company is aiming for 4K capture. They also dropped this other tidbit, in case you aren't excited enough:

I won't comment on any specifics until the 1st of the year. But "revolution" applies more to this than the RED ONE did to cinema.

They'll hear from us January 1st. [Red User via Engadget]

Sprint's HTC Touch Diamond Groped Ahead of Release by WSJ

We've been keeping you up to date on the CDMA version of HTC's Touch Diamond, coming soon to Sprint, but the lucky buggers over at the Wall St Journal got their mitts on one ahead of its launch. It's fatness turns out to be 0.6-inches in size, partly due to that 1,350 mAh battery good for 4.2 hours of talk time. It comes with Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional Edition with a Sprint-customized TouchFLO interface plus a bunch of extras like Dataviz's Documents to Go Suite, Opera browser, a YouTube app and it works with Sprint TV and the Sprint Music Store. There's also 4GB of internal memory, a 3.2-megapixel camera, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth A2DP. The price is now set at $250, apparently, with 2-year contract, and it's now due mid-September.
CDMA HTC Touch Diamond Has Release Date, Price, Fatness-Highlighting Red Rear

We suggested the CDMA version of the Touch Diamond had eaten all the pies last week: Now word is out on its release and Sprint and HTC have chosen not to disguise it. Oh no... they've dolled that large rear-end up in a striking red color. Bizarre, though I guess its in the "if you can't hide it, make a feature of it" school of thinking. We can at least partly forgive its 0.55-inch depth, though, which is due to a 1350mAh battery. It's due out August 28th on Sprint, costing $549 for the bare phone, and $299 on a two-year contract. [Unwiredview via NewLaunches]

Red Sprint HTC Diamond Spotted?

Maybe it's real. Maybe it's a Photoshop. Either way, here's a red HTC Diamond with a Sprint logo on it. The image goes along with months of rumors about a Sprint-based HTC Diamond—one that will have a more curved case than its GSM counterpart along with a battery boost from 900 mAh to 1340 mAh (over 30%). But whether the image is confirmation of these rumors or just a product thereof is not yet known. [Brighthand]

Red's 5k, 4k, and 3k Pro Cameras: What the Resolution Really Means

Their insane resolution. It's one thing to talk about resolution as an abstract number, but Red has a fantastic chart comparing these resolutions to things you're actually familiar with, like your HDTV or your old SDTV. Even the Scarlet, the most affordable of their cameras, dwarfs your 1080p TV in the way that Wilt Chamberlain's "scoring" record dwarfs ours. [Red]

RED's last announcement for the day is the RED RAY disc drive, which looks like Darth Vader's optical drive of choice. It plays 4K, 2K (Epic's insane 5K looks like it's off the table, but what about Scarlet's 3K?) and 1080p video down through standard-def off of RED Disc or RED Express, plus native RAW R3D files off of a CompactFlash card.
Red Scarlet 3K HD Pocket Pro Camera Under $3000

Red's pocket-sized professional camera, Scarlet has made its promised debut at NAB, and it is the tiny hotness. It shoots in heady 3k resolution with Red's new 2/3-inch Mysterium X sensor, shooting from 1-120fps (180fps burst) and up to 100MB/sec REDCODE RAW HD, recording to dual Compact Flash cards. It's got Wi-Fi control (sweet), and all the necessary ports: HDMI, HD-SDI, Firewire 800 and USB2. The 4.8-inch LCD should be more than adequate on this compact HD shooter. Besides coming with an 8X T2.8 Red zoom lens, it's compatible with most Red One accessories. Price? We're hearing under $3000, set for early '09, no pre-orders. But the note that specs and delivery dates could change is a bit ominous, since the Red One saw some delays.
Mr. T-Mobile Warns Mr. Engadget Mobile Over the Color Magenta

Mr. T says I'm crazy and he may be right. I'm a bird! I'm a plane! I'm a choo-choo train! But Mr.T-Mobile is the only crazy one: they requested Engadget Mobile to stop using their shade of magenta in his logo because it may lead to "confusion in the marketplace." Their shade of magenta? I've known magenta since she was a kid! She was called Cynthia back then. Don't worry Mr. Block, it'll all pass. Just hold your breath, and remember your exercises!
Red PSP Coming Bundled With God of War This Summer

There's no exact date yet, but Kotaku's reporting that a red PSP will be hitting this summer bundled with a copy of God of War: Chains of Olympus as well as Superbad and a gift certificate for a downloadable PlayStation Store game. It's similar to the Star Wars PSP from last summer in that it's a branded PSP, but instead of a bald disabled man with a deep voice, you're getting a bald Spartan with a deep voice.
Microsoft Valentine's Day Zune Delayed; Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word

Those chaps at Microsoft promised a special edition Zune 80 for Valentine's Day, but the units have struck a delay and will not reach their destinations on time.
