A fresh app on Google Code claims to allow hacked iPhone users to play classic NES games. Based on the open-source portable NES emulator InfoNES, the emulator still has its training wheels on. Allegedly, games will run slightly slower than on an actual NES (or standard emulator) and you won't get any sound output yet. We're not 100% sure about its authenticity, but given that the iPhone runs Mac OS X, it looks quite legit in the video after the jump.
In addition to the fact that ports to the iPhone's Mac OS X shouldn't be that complicated, as many programming interfaces are shared, Google Code is open for everyone to review. And needless to say, we are so going to try. And with that we mean: right now. [iPhone NES via Technabob]

Hmm, hopefully the multi touch can deal with the button mashing and the what not. Some games get pretty crazy.
I wonder if the "buttons" could deal with an NES game like Track & Field.
Looks like some multi-touch hacking will be needed before controls become any good.

This app refuses to transfer to my iPhone. =/
@Bootes: Well I got it over using iPhoneInterface curl and scp failed. However it doesn't show up in the Applications list...
wow, the first cool iPhone app
I can confirm that it "DOES" work, you simply need to make the binary/application executable.
like so:
chmod +x /Applications/NESApp.app/NESApp
Then reboot the phone.
@aupton: For some reason it was complaining that NESApp.app was not a directory. I got it to work finally by taring NESApp.app and then untaring it on the phone.
See, I wasn't lying. Now they just need to make the controls a bit more usable!
great. button mashing on a glass screen.
So how does Mario keep moving right after he lets go of the D-Pad button? Does it have "sticky" keys?
Almost smells fake to me.
that's it, i was going to wait a year for the iphone, but now i'm fucking getting one.
@eddiesdguy:
I'd wait till they at least fix the movement toggling it has now.
I remember janking the controller from one side to the other to jump and stuff. Thus, I would probably change the screen's mode from vertical to horizontal constantly....
... but still: it looks mighty fine. This hybrid of brandnew and old-school :)
I am not going to deny the fact that there are a lot of exciting tools on the iPhone, but I must admit, it's announcements like this that make me thank my lucky stars that I have a shiny and new iPhone.
