A Slightly Better View of the Orion Nebula

No doubt, you've seen Orion when stargazing. A spot on his belt that's sometimes mistaken for a star is really the Orion Nebula. Here's an ever-so-better better view, thanks to the 67-megapixel, infrared-sensitive VISTA telescope. [Full 341MB Version via Wired]

Recycled Keyboard Purse Stores Keys In Keys

The Keyboard Purse is cute enough, and for $40, it's a reasonably priced purchase. Now if only you could actually type on the thing, I'd reclassify it as a manbag in a heartbeat. [Neatorama]

Has Apple Become Microsoft?

An editorial in today's Wall Street Journal argues that Apple's love of strategy has overclouded its passion for products. Is Holman Jenkins right that Apple is the new Microsoft, and iTunes is the new Windows? More »

There's an ad on the front page now offering web hosting on servers that run as fast as "a puma....on rocket skates".

Between that and phones that are fast like a "race horse duct-taped to a SCUD missile".....well, I guess that's what advertising is gonna be now. Huh.

How fast do you want your gadgets to go? Personally, I wouldn't settle for anything less than a raging bull super-glued to a 747 wearing twin Millennium Falcons as bun warmers.

@OCEntertainment: I consider a cheetah slingshotting perfectly between two black holes to be the bare minimum for my needs. As long as the integrity holds, that is. I have no interest in cheetah spaghetti.

Today—and to us—the HTC Scorpion exists but a couple of lines of code in a purported leaked Android build. But one day, this 1.5GHz, Android 2.2 handset could be the phone that makes your Nexus One look old. More »

Started playing Star Trek Online about 3 days ago. Confused as hell- don't really understand several aspects of the game, like why it automatically groups me with 3 other ships when I warp into a system, or how I actually gain rank or upgrade my ship.

But damn, space combat is FUN.#whitenoise

I really enjoy podcasts and listen to quite a few tech podcasts right now. I like Gizmodo way more than any of the other tech sites I visit. Does Gizmodo have a podcast? If not, why? Right now I have to settle for Engadget and GDGT (Which I like, just not as well as Giz).

@Bigbadbikernerd: The more pressing question: why isn't there a Gizmodo comments podcast, where a group of people sit around make hilarious conversation/commentary about Giz articles, a la the Stuff You Should Know podcast.

It could be like the populace's rebuttal to the editor's article.

@Gordonium: Holy crap! That is an AWESOME idea. Let me know if you need commentators. I would clear a spot on my schedule to be a part of that!

The commentators listed in: [gizmodo.com]

would be great.

@Bigbadbikernerd: I wonder if we'd need Gawker's blessing on that.

Man, I'd also have to invest in a way better mic if I got involved in any sort of podcast scheme. This HP built-in webcam mic ain't gonna cut it.

Any other #whitenoise folk down with the idea of a commenter's podcast?

@Gordonium: I would love to contribute to something like that, but I'm not sure when I would be able to do so. Typing comments doesn't interfere with my job, and working towards finishing my degree means that my time outside of work is generally pretty devoted to classwork. Whenever possible, I would certainly put some time into this, though.

I wonder--has anyone noticed that we (as a collective and obnoxiously US-centric we) have become exceptionally acceptant of incompetence? Take any number of examples--"No Child Left Behind", the state of affairs with health plans as caused by rising premiums and a plainly-broken Medicare system, AT&T's shit network, gay marriage bans, child obesity, ADD/ADHD "epidemics" brought about by our own lack of conditioning of the younger generations against the accelerated exposure to visual media...

We just glance towards the screen/panel/tube or tilt an ear at the speaker and "tsk" at best and take no action--and what good does it bring if we do? Inertia draws us closer to complete stasis on a daily basis, and globally, little is done to change this... because hey, we get all these neat toys while careening towards this wall.

I'm no luddite--not by a long shot--so this is no spit against tech. I love it dearly. More of an observation of how we've shifted our priorities for the worse when it comes to that which the tech is supposed to benefit--namely, the We.

I always wanted a job where I could work from home. No need to commute, get dressed or look good in public. I get to stay home with my family!

Sometimes, when the genie grants your wish, it's not what you thought it would be...

Now I'm stuck at home during the worst blizzard 1-2 punch the State of Maryland has had on record, yet I am still "at work". Heavy snow, high winds, 3 foot long icicles hanging from the gutters outside my bedroom window and the wife and kids are chilling downstairs to hot tea and a "period flick".

Whatever.

It's nice to be home.

@Stevox: That's when you crack out the "The blizzard caused a blackout, can't work!" excuse.

I have a paid internship where I work from home. It was fun at first, I could stay in my bed with a laptop and do what I needed to do. Now I think I'd prefer to be around people, there's no social aspect and it can be tempting to stay focused when you're surrounded by all your fun things at home.

That being said, it's awesome to not have to commute or wake up an hour earlier to get ready.

Someone in Cupertino broke the rss feed reader in the iPhone browser..

When I type this:

I get the login page for me.com ([www.me.com])

Feeds were working last night, and I have NOT updated my phone or connected it to my mac. A co-worker is getting the same, so it's not just me.

Opera Mini for iPhone Coming Soon, In Theory
