The adorable Boston Dynamics RHex robot uses a combo of legs, wheels and paddles to cover pretty much any terrain, water included. It looks like some sort of frantic animal as it thrashes around in the grass and the sand, but it manages to make it through every time. Lil' RHex is remote controllable from up to half a kilometer away using onboard front and rear cameras, and it's even available for sale now. The bad news is that you need to get in touch for a price quote, so you know what that means: you can't afford one. Pity. [Product Page via BotJunkie]

I had an "uncanny valley" moment there.
very cool.
that video actually scared me...imagine it with spikes or claws chasing after you... >_>.... <_<
I laughed out loud at least 4 times while watching this. It needs a Steve Jobs bobble head on the top though....
Stick a weapon on it and enter it on Battle Bots.
Jeez, that thing needs to chill out, especially towards the end!
impressive, and scary at the same time. Skynet is only but a small distance away...then you know what happens...
hmmm will it blend?
Thats pretty creeptastic.
So I'm finally giving in after about 6 months of just viewing pages! I now feel the need to comment!
That is frikin' awesome! Gotta love when it's tumbling down the rocks... To bad about the $$$, would make an excellent christmas gift to me!
i lol'ed very cool
well I know what my nightmares are gonna be about..
It reminds me of a retarded groundhog. I actually felt sorry for it. Although i agree, if it had claws or spikes, or teeth, i'd certainly not be around it.
Someone should make this life-size so one can sit in it. While they're at it, they should make a life-size "Animal" truck with retractable claws in the tires.. cuz nothing can stop the Animal.
that actually freaked me out a little bit. it looked like a giant insect or something, especially in the beginning when its going through the tall vegetation. yeesh.
I'm absolutely in love with it!
Seems like it would climb better with the legs the other way, but I'm sure they tested both before deciding on this configuration. The swimming is cool, I like how it appears to come up for air. The end was great, looks like it'd be a lot of fun making it chase the neighborhood kids around!
It makes the world a much better place for... something.
I want a manned ATV version!
Power one of these with nuclear power plant and it can over load the plant when it get there. Doomsday machine.
@norfizzle: my thoughts exactly. gave me the heebie jeebies!
This is the new robot pet. I want one now!
Seeing it run at the end looks like a limping animal.
Six small --simultaneous-- steps for robot kind?
There's something really cute about that thing, its a like a little dog. The Daleks could never make it up stairs...
That's one of the funniest headlines I've seen in a long time. I thought I was the only manic thrasher around here!
lol, i think it looks cute :P Looks funny running through the vegetation at the start and up the steps at the end. Crazy fast at the end too lol
@davekaybsc: "Terminate!....Terminate!" I always wondered why Dr. Who didn't carry around a bag full of BB's for that very reason.
This looks like something I would call an exterminator to get rid of. Majorly creepy.
At the end, it looks like someone said "Ok, now you can go play."
That's pretty impressive considering it's size and simplicity. It does have it's small creepout factor though but I would still like to play around with one with some kind of zombie head mounted on top.
@odnet: Will it blend?
classic!
Dude I want one of those things, I don't know why... and I don't know what I'd do with it, but I want one.
That thing is so cute. I loved it at the end running away into the sunset. I can't wait to see a whole family of these things. It would be even cooler if it were autonomous and not remote controlled.
I loved the ending and actually laughed out loud at how adorable it was speeding off like that.
I would buy one if could afford it. But the motivation behind it would be the same as buying a Rolio.
But this thing actually gets bonus points for not being an exact science. Sure, it synchronizes for diving and climbing stairs, but the rest of the time it's just like "Imma go this way somehow I don't care *thrash thrash thrash*".
In one word: adorable.
That thing is amazing! They need to partner with the defense department and give it some AI. This of the possibilities!
old news i saw this at a DARPA presentation nearly a year ago
It is cute in a weird way, but also creepy in that it somehow seems lifelike, like some small crazy-retarded-limping animal.Amazing it stays in one piece after falling down the sides of boulder-laden hills, I guess its a quicker way to get down.
Sorry for double posting by I urge anybody watching to turn on Benny Hill's Yakety Sax to go along with this video.
That shit is sick!
lolz i could imagine this thing chasing down terrorists or even your troublesome child. Pulling this out would make him never disobey you ever again.
I remember seeing the small protptypes of this thing several years ago. Based on the independent operation of how roach legs operate, I believe. Basically the legs just keep going, no brains, not thinking, just tenacious forward movement. Totally awesome.
Reminds me of a six legged retarded puppy, but still cute.
I really laughed out loud at this thing. It's actually quite an impressive technical achievement. They really thought outside the box on this creepy crawler. Watching it plummet down the down the rocky hill and then reset and move on was really impressive. Makes you wonder if people are going in all the wrong directions trying to get robots mobile.
I think this little terror conquered more terrain that any bot i've seen so far, and I gather they spent quit a bit less than Asimo who took a nasty tumble trying to climb 3 stairs upright lol.
Cute.
But, we are soooo dead. Now they have a robot that can out run and swim us.
they should've named it CRAZYLEGS
@SNEAKERFIEND
or better yet, get to the tree line, attach a bomb to it on a timer or something, and send a dozen of them scurrying frantically towards the enemy from all angles. It's to fast and agile, give it a top and bottom armor plating and it would be an serious killer lol..
I had a flashback to Serious Sam, where they had the dudes running at you with bombs in their hands on suicide missions.
That is the ugliest, silliest design I have ever seen. It looks like a pug throwing a tantrum.
Oh, and they should call it the WTF3000.
... design looks like it has incredible potential scalability too... size of a bedbug or a football field!
Mars Rover of the future ftw.
That is the freakin' cutest robot I've ever seen.
who ever they get to control this thing, bettter take some motion sickness pills because watching on a monitor as much as that camera is gonna be all other the place...They will be Losing their lunch all over the place!
@stat321
that really made me laugh... :D
It reminds me of the Animal--that 1980s toy truck that had claws extend from its wheels.
"Nothing can stop the Animal!"
Very cool. Where can I get one so i can chase small children around the neighborhood with it?
Brute force over elegance. Love it.
@Shockage:
That is what I thought too. That thing would chare the bejesus out of me.
@upokyin: Wow, I forgot ALL about that thing. Thanks for bringing back the memories.
The video failed to show what happens when it flip.
@TYPE-E
They did actually. It flipped over when falling down the hill, and kept on moving.
that thing was pretty cute wish i could get one
you guys showed this shit like last year. i hope you dont think were all as doped up as you are
Did anyone get a price quote?
