The Kanagawa Institute of Technology has developed a robotic suit that will aid in the care of elderly individuals who need physical support. The suit, showcased at a trade show in Japan this week, is intended to help personal caregivers lift those they look after, while reducing the strain on themselves. The unit takes around 10 minutes to equip properly, is very large and weighs in at 66 pounds. The suit enables potential superheroes to lift a 100Kg mass as if it were 50Kg. For those of you who are not strong at mathematics, that is a 50% decrease in the effective mass!
It is hoped the outfit will be worked into a solution that will be made available in all homes, to aid with various domestic tasks and/or sex games. [Yahoo News via Raw Feed]

Looks a little bulky.
@Jesustron:
Well Ripley´s loader in Aliens was no beauty queen either
Unfortunately it will crush those that it is design to help :(
First case of a robot raping a woman?
It's not rape if she enjoys it, seems we got a back door beauty here.
Wait, what? They're making robot suits for the care-givers? Logic: let's give people who are already fully able more abilities, so that they can help more! Wouldn't it make a little more sense to try and develop something for the elderly themselves? Nip that shit at the bud, yo.
Look, I'm really sorry, but that DOES make her butt look big.
Libertarians beware: once the elderly are equipped with this shit, you'll never be able to kill off SS and Medicare... and live to tell about it.
Rojin Z.
@strider_mt2k: Today she wore the wrong trousers.
@dingus: Admittedly she does have some junk in the trunk.
"I'like ro-bot-BUTTS AND I CANNOT LIE..."
oh wait...neverminds; that was so ~2042
instead of inventing something so ridiculously bulky, can't they just get 2 person to help out the elderly if one is not enough? Waste of damn resources.
btw- I'm sorry but that looks like a Sega Dreamcast with a few more ports dremmel'd to her upper back
Dang! If only I could lift 50 kg...
@discounteggroll: I believe the phrase you're looking for is: "I like ro-BUTTs and I cannot lie."
You know you're special when they bring out the human fork-lift to take care of you...
be nice with some fairings to smooth things out a bit. there's def. robotech potential here i think. oh and maybe add some frickin lasers and a vorpal sword. snicker snack snicker snack
Those 28 words were totally worth viewing 3 more ads for. Totally, no sarcasm what-so-ever.
@RiceBandit: Old people are... old. they are frail, and while making old people stronger so they can help themselves may seem like a good idea on paper. Following through introduces new burdens.
I mean heck, Old people have proven that when living in a retirement community and having a prescription of Viagra, they can not be trusted to keep their STDs to themselves. [www.local6.com]
At least in my mind, giving old people the ability to do jumping jacks again, or whatever activity might reintroduce heart problems or bone fractures from over exertion, SEEMS like a very bad idea. Especially if I have to pay for their medicare.
but will it blend?
I'm no math whiz, but let me see if I understand this...
By strapping a 66lb weight to my back (approx 30kg) I can now lift 100kg as if it were 50. So, in effect, I'm lifting 80kg. Is it worth it? Or should I just learn to lift with my legs instead of my back?
@rsquared:
Normally you can carry a lot more weight on your back then on your arms. So a 30kg weight on your back should not keep you from carrying 50 kg on your arms.
Call me when it has at least a 400% increased lift ratio and is small enough that I can still wear it while driving a Porsche.
@rsquared: As I understand it, this type of suit assists your muscles when your moving, so the suit also assists in holding up it's own weight.
There was another giz article about some suit being developed for the military that was mostly a leg assist, allowing you to walk farther with heavy loads.
Come on guys... Think of the possibilities if this gets into the wrong hands... Cops just got a whole lot funnier... "Sir, step out of the ca...holly s$*#t Darrel. Look at the size of that guy... RUNNNNN!!!!!"
All that for a 50% increase in power - jeez, you can get that with artificial stimulants that fit in small paper packets!!!
And pray tell, how are the 'old' people supposed to climb into this thing in the first place?
I've fallen and I can't get up.
@erockO: I'm sure they'll have a blender attachment available for it when it hits the market.
